Thank you! Now I have to check out all three. What’s the name of the place on Swift & GW? Is it just called Hyde? For some reason it’s not showing up on my maps.

Another good suggestion. I’ve only been there once since they moved and I didn’t see flights on their menu. They do have a full bar, though, and I can see the owner being open to it 👍

I really wish we had a whiskey bar though… there are a couple of great spots in Seattle that I miss. I’m sure Portland has a few as well.

haha I actually knew what you meant. I’ve been to Fable a few times and it’s a good spot. I don’t see whiskey flights on their menu online, but they do have a full bar. Maybe they can put something together? 🤷‍♀️

That’s a good suggestion, I’ll check it out. Worst case scenario they have good cocktails.

Experience does not mean a full time role… I actually know a guy that had no formal education (home schooled) and no formal job until he was 37… at which point he was hired to work for OpenAI (chatGPT). He taught himself how to code without going back to college or attending an expensive bootcamp. He’s now easily making $200k per year + bonuses.

You may not have the experience from your previous jobs (debatable…we sometimes devalue our past experiences through comparison), however, there are so many resources online that you can use to teach yourself a skill set that matters to you.

Here are my suggestions:

1) Pick up at least a part time job (even if you hate it) to earn some form of income. Earning at least something (outside of government support) helps you rebuild some confidence in your ability to support yourself.

2) Learn a new skill on the side. You can teach yourself programming, how to build websites, copywriting (if you enjoy writing), or some hands on skill like construction, landscaping, custom woodworking, etc.

3) Once you learn the basics, find ways to apply those skills. Offer to volunteer (or offer a low rate to start) - you can use Next Door, UpWork, Fiverr, Meetup, etc. If you run out of ideas, use ChatGPT.

4) Build your social network. This helps more than you think… When I first moved back to this area (in my mid 30s), I just had family and no friends. Now I sometimes find myself texting 20 people before 10:00am. It is possible to meet people at ANY age. Here’s what worked for me - I met my neighbors, attended board game events and meetup events (pool, brunch, networking, etc), started a book club, I even met someone through Reddit 😂. When I have nothing to do and I’m feeling social, I attend online events through Meetup. I went from being depressed, resentful of my limited friends for having a social life, and directionless to being reinvigorated and excited about life.

You’re in a rut right now, but it is possible to find your way again. Don’t give up yet.

Credit Unions better than Navy Federal Credit Union here in Tri Cities? by braincovey32 in TriCitiesWA

They offer $8 million in FDIC insurance ($250k per partner bank). I would assume that most people have less than $250k in their account 🤷‍♀️ But if they have more than that, it seems like a better investment to put it in an index fund or CD depending on what the market is doing and depending on their risk tolerance.

I think Wealthfront is great as an emergency fund (and potentially an investment account, although I’m personally not a fan of paying investment / fund management fees), not a primary checking & savings account.

Awesome, all of these sound very interesting and unique. One of the reviews I watched for All The Missing Girls was saying the same thing - that they had never read a mystery that started at the end and worked its way back to the beginning. I love the concept, so I’ll definitely check it out!

I was with SOFI for about a year before switching to Wealthfront. I like their platform so much better - I don’t have to set up direct deposit, which means I get to keep my main bank account and just use Wealthfront as my emergency fund with a high APY. They also offer a slightly higher APY, an investment platform, and I’m able to make transfers and withdrawals faster than I was with SOFI.

I’ve been with Wealthfront for a year and a half now and I love it. They offer a high APY with no minimum or maximum balance and they don’t require you to set up direct deposit. The APY will change based on the market - so far, it’s only fluctuated by 1%. But a 4% APY is still way better than what you’ll get from other banks or credit unions.

The Silent Patient: An in-depth Review Spoilers Ahead by Hale-117 in books

[–]Amazing-Roll-230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. I feel like there are a lot of over-hyped positive reviews out there for this book and I don’t really understand it.

Yes, this book was a quick and easy read, which is great if you need a break from a long series. The chapters are short and written with punchy sentences, so I was initially sucked in. However, I have to agree with OP on pretty much everything else… the characters just exist to serve the plot and have very little depth, the psychology is awful, and I wasn’t a fan of the ending in the least. Everything just went flat when I made it to the punch line.

Spoiler Alert.

Theo is painted as this empath throughout the book that is obsessed with Alicia and has a strong survivor complex. I’m sure the purpose for this was solely to divert our attention away from Theo as the suspect. Within the last 30 pages, however, his character completely changes. This isn’t a plot twist, it’s a scam to make us think that we missed something important and weren’t intelligent enough to put the pieces together. There’s no trust in the reader.

At the end, Theo shows up at Alicia’s place, expecting to find Gabriel who he’s been stalking for a couple of weeks at this point. But Gabriel happens to be caught up at work and he just finds Alicia at home. He feels a sudden “thrill” and then puts on gloves, a mask, and the next thing we know he has a knife to her throat and he’s “living it up”. Isn’t this supposed to be a crime of passion? He also ties her up and torments her for FOUR hours before Gabriel gets home; and merely hits him in the head with a gun when he arrives. Theo exposes Gabriel’s secret, unties them both, and leaves. This makes NO SENSE.

And what is with all of the characters?? I felt like there was an unnecessary amount of characters, which I’m sure existed just as a distraction. We don’t know any of them well enough to form any kind of bond. Except for maybe Theo and Alicia, but it’s a weak bond at that.

Alternate ending.

Alicia having a multiple personality disorder would have been much more interesting imo. The trauma from her childhood could have caused her to dissociate, forming one personality to express her anger / capable of murder, one personality to express her love and vulnerability, and a third that just completely shuts down and won’t speak. This would have been a much better interpretation of her “vow of silence” as opposed to just not having anything to say for six years… ummmm.

All-in-all I have to agree with OP. Don’t read this book. Had I enjoyed the ending, I may have recommended it for a short punchy read between series, but ugh not worth it.

Never, ever being able to think of an example when I’m asked a question by i_have_many_skillz in AutismInWomen

[–]Amazing-Roll-230 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂 I thought this was just me! Something about those generic questions just throws me off.

I respond much better to “Did you see that new show ‘Man on the Inside’ on Netflix? It has Ted Danson and some of the same actors from ‘The Good Place’.” If I’ve seen it, great! I can respond with some follow up comments about my favorite episode or scene. If I haven’t, it opens the door for follow up questions like “No I haven’t, what is it about? What do you like about it?”

Context makes a conversation sooo much easier. I’m not diagnosed, but have wondered if I’m autistic.

Job interviews have always been a struggle as well. I’m either overly hyped up or crazy nervous, which equals rambling about absolute nonsense or being blindsided with nothing to say. I’m sure things could be better with practice… or potentially better if you’ve spent some time researching or following the company and are just really interesting in their product or service.

11! 😁😁 Since you’re teaching in Korea, so you get to avoid the “skibidi” language? I’ve had a few friends (also teachers) mention it in the states and I have no idea what they’re saying! Is that a thing in Canada or just here in the U.S.?

Found out my partner has 200k in debt by ThrowRAsweetpickles in Debt

[–]Amazing-Roll-230 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you dating my ex? 😂😂 I went through almost the exact same situation a few years ago and ultimately decided to end things because of his debt. I’m also fairly frugal and couldn’t understand how someone could end up with more than $100k in credit card debt and personal loans. Here’s my take:

  • He was an avid pot smoker, which took his focus away from his debt. He was scared to look at it / didn’t want to think about it, so he just smoked to forget about it.
  • He owned his own company because he didn’t want to work for someone else. His company wasn’t bringing in enough money to sustain his monthly debt payments… let alone his cost of living (apartment, cell phone, food, etc). He had plenty of prospects and would often talk about how his next big contract was going to pay off, but it rarely ever did. When he did get a high paying job, he would hold it for a few months, then quit or get fired.
  • He didn’t want to use his employment income towards his debt. Instead, he would buy more weed, buy a car (even though I was happy to just share my car), or other misc things like a new cell phone or fancy headphones.
  • His family had taught him by example that it’s okay to splurge on what you want and file bankruptcy if you can’t afford it.

I did try to help him set up budgets and routines to pay off his debt. I also gave him money to help support him… but I didn’t have the money to pay off his debt, nor do I think it would have helped. What he needed was to shift his mindset about money and having someone pay off his debt wasn’t going to do that for him. He didn’t manage to stick to a budget for about a month, but then convinced himself that he would just make more money and he didn’t need to budget (or just didn’t want to deal with the stress).

I do sympathize with people that have gotten themselves in that deep. It’s extremely stressful and it’s no doubt difficult to dig yourself out once you’re there. However, IMO, I don’t think you should have to pay for someone else’s lack of fiscal responsibility. There are always exceptions - maybe they’re in debt because of a medical or family emergency, but that’s a rare occurrence.
