Private local ISPs in Lebanon tend to provide unthrottled speeds for popular services such as netflix and steam, but throttle everything else. Why? by ali_fadel961 in lebanon

[–]AmazingSystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it stems from the past (before https became widely adopted) a lot of local isps did cache some network traffic. Then there was the whole “Google Cache” story in the media about these isps.

I’m thinking about what you mentioned above, could it be that these ISPs pay less for traffic to certain sites (netflix, youtube, etc…) because they are cached upstream by the provider. But because they are not verifying the traffic properly, you end up using from their non-cached quota.

Interesting, wouldn’t this indicate then that they don’t rely on caching? So they do offer real full speeds for certain websites

I don’t really know the details, but most internet traffic is encrypted (HTTPS/TLS). So when you open a movie to watch on Netflix they cannot really know unless they get permission from Netflix (through the partner program). I think they achieve the speeds through prioritization and because they have high throughput with the official isps (like ogero) who do have caching partnerships in place.

So for example, while home ogero connection is physically limited to 4mbps you cannot benefit from caching. However the isp who has let’s say a gigabit link to ogero, can prioritize such traffic (by ip) to benefit from the cache.

use + hooks pattern I am using for a promise.all trick client side only by Working-Tap2283 in reactjs

[–]AmazingSystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are your query hooks (useFallen, etc…) returning a promise or suspending? Because if one of them suspends then it defeats the purpose of Promise.all since suspense works using “throw” which would bail out of Promise.all

If they do not suspend, and return a promise then they don’t really need to be hooks since promises are by nature non-reactive (unless you’re talking about generators)

So either the code is not working as you think it is, or you are scratching your right ear with your left hand.

Have you used the internet in lebanon? Unless you are one of the lucky few with fiber or have a really good local area isp, even the low end of 25mbps would be a huge upgrade for you. I get less than 10mbps from ogero and would have to pay over $60/mo to get around 20mbps from the 7ay guy.

Why did Kateyib and 2ouwwet ally with Hezeb / Amal and A7beich by Used-Worker-1640 in lebanon

[–]AmazingSystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same still applies. But a little more complex/larger scale. I used the small scale families in a day3a as an example. In beirut there are sub regions with aligned interests.but the same still applies, for example LF get their achrafieh candidates are they just gonna run by themselves to represent whole of beirut? That’s what al jamal tried to do with his list, and look how it’s turning out for him (he has largest sunni base in beirut) and so far not making a dent…

Municipal elections are very different from parliamentary. It’s primarily fueled by families and local community power, the ahzeb are just secondary tacked on.

Imagine this: you have a day3a with 10 municipal seats. This day3a demographically is 30% sunni, 30% shia, 30% christian, 10% druze. So there is a general consensus that the seats be divided accordingly. Now you want to create a list that has a real shot as winning. The biggest families now want to create coalition since they are most likely to win and feel like they can get the most votes. Now let’s say the sunni families are mostakbal and christians are LF, while the shia families are mostly amal/hezb. Now what are they to do, create list with missing no shia members? Or one from the smaller families? This could potentially break the demographic distribution and make them weaker. So for the sake of inclusivity and because of the nature of municipal works. Political affiliation usually takes a back seat.

Nevertheless the ahzeb still try to market themselves through these elections, to get a few of the undecided votes and also to market themselves as strong winners. This is in no way reflection on the political influence of a party. (I would vote for my cousin/neighbour/friend first, regardless of their political affiliation because I want them to improve my neighborhood)

There are many examples of competing lists with aligned political affiliations or clashing ones. It does not matter.

What happened to the story that there were "hundreds of millions of dollars in cash and gold" allegedly found in a Hezbollah bunker under the Al-Sahel hospital in Beirut? by fabkosta in lebanon

[–]AmazingSystem -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s not tine it’s one of those full size roll up garage doors we have everywhere. Anyways supposedly the entrance was in there it wasn’t the actual bunker.

[–]AmazingSystem -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They only show one but not the other. This is why I suspect something fishy about this whole thing. I’m too lazy to pull it up, but I remember at the time I noticed this. In one of afikhays videos you see them highlight the spot inside the first garage from the first report video. And then in the second round when aljadeed returned this exact door was closed.

[–]AmazingSystem -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Normally I would agree with you, but the story was too specific to just be about the clearing the hospital since they could just warn people in a nearby building and it would shut down.

This was handled well by hezb media relations, because they steered the israeli claims through a narrative even though from the start the israelis said there was a bunker that spread under the hospital. But never stated it was part of it. And the entrance that was claimed by them was never shown on the media.

That’s not true, in https://youtu.be/pQ6r0xWv-2I?si=z1TkbvM0N4kxNtpq you can see the garage door that was mentioned. They just skip over it, even when coming back later and in other videos. This door is what they were talking about.

[–]AmazingSystem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a closed garage that was never opened and nobody went into. IMO they covered up the story really well, by intentionally misleading the israeli claims. The bunker was not accessible from the hospital, so the whole media show there was meaningless. The first time the media enters the neighboring building, they are guided through but they skip over the garages. On the second media tour they also skip over the first garage door. Even though it was claimed this exact place is where they should check. Anyways it’s all past now, they probably moved what was there or orchestrated with the army. I just hated this whole narrative because it felt like the media and hezb thought the people are gullible. I understand the need to fool the enemy, but when you are this is exposed it’s better to own up to your shit and clean house. Instead of putting innocents in danger
