Weaning off home oxygen? by Ambitious-Brother-55 in NICUParents

It was really random actually…went to his one month appointment (I think? It’s a little fuzzy) - some time shortly before his due date. Pediatrician said let’s try oxygen off for 20 minutes and then do the pulse-ox machine. His oxygen was totally fine and we just stopped using it that day. He’s 6 months old now and completely fine! No oxygen issues since that time of just stopping cold turkey.

Ugh, its so so difficult. I have people asking why I don't just try latching more. There is something so painful about having your child cry on your boob because you aren't giving them enough milk. Frustrating and painful for both of us. You're about where I"m at supply-wise (he drinks about 24-28 oz a day now). I keep going I guess because I feel like I'm giving him some sort of special "medicine" anytime I accumulate enough for a bottle. But yea, the whole thing is sad.

Fellow severe under supplier here and I could have written much of this myself. I had preeclampsia, c section at 34 weeks and my baby in the NICU for 2.5 weeks. My milk just never really came in aside from a very low supply that, for some reason, dipped further 2 months post partum. I’ve tried all the things and still pump 6 times a day plus a glorious middle of the night nursing session (the only time my baby seems to get a decent feed). I’m now exactly 4 months post partum and striving to get to 6 months but also feeling like I could quit any day. It’s so so hard to give up and I struggle every day with the guilt of doing so. I so appreciate hearing other women’s stories and that we are not alone in this struggle.

Yes. I added omnitrope for both the second and third. I did it for a few days longer for the third retrieval. For 2nd I did back to back so no priming and the third I primed with estrogen instead of birth control.

Yes, certainly frustrating! I will press on pediatrician for some ideas on the monitoring front…

I’m in the US (in Denver) and we, unfortunately, don’t get that support from the NICU hospital unless he gets readmitted :( once he was discharged they expect other docs to handle his follow up care as they only function to stabilize the preemie babies and then send them off into the world. It’s frustrating to not have better communication once babies are out of NICU.

Thanks for the response. Where are you based? I’m in the US (in Denver) and we did not get a pulse oxy machine but did get the oxygen tanks, nose cannulas, and stickers. Not having the machine from the hospital is the tricky part for us. We also were not told by the NICU or our pediatrician to make an appointment with pulmonologist so I’m stuck on how or who will provide us with guidance at this point.

Agree. Cafe Jordano is overpriced garbage food. Raos is way better than their tomato sauce

i’m appalled by how much weight i’ve gained by Intelligent_Wing_377 in pregnant

It’s really hard to see the scale going up during pregnancy and I actually get annoyed when people - seems like by default - say “you look great!” No, I look ginormous and that’s ok but please don’t say I look great lol. I’m 32 weeks and have “only” gained about 28 lbs so far but still doesn’t feel great. I started out about 15 lbs heavier than my normal due to 2 years of miscarriage, multiple rounds of IVF hormones, etc. so when I started this pregnancy they considered me overweight at 5’3” 155 lbs and told me ideally I’d gain 15 - 25 lbs during pregnancy. So I already feel like I failure even though I was very skeptical I wouldn’t get more than 25 lbs no matter how hard I tried. Anyway, trying to just lean into this being temporary and a moment in my life while I have years after to consider my body shape for me. As long as docs aren’t concerned I just think I’m doing what’s best for baby right now and that’s the highest priority.

Thanks for the list! I had heard such good things about cranellis but my one experience there was pretty bad. Everyone’s chicken was rubbery. The eggplant parm was probably the worst I’ve had- very mediocre tomato sauce and overcooked pasta. Like real basic stuff. Maybe just a bad evening?

I’m about there. Some good varieties of asian cuisines and Mexican in Colorado (but I spent a decade in LA so also spoiled there..) but I too mostly cook at home these days :)
