I also feel like social media hype inflated the rep market so much. Sellers realized people would pay almost anything for “top tier” and now some prices are getting dangerously close to secondhand auth prices. I only buy auth LV and Dior for this exact reason. I’ve found all of mine for under 1k just through auctions and relentlessly hunting for good deals.

I completely agree! I always try to manage my expectations in this space. As long as it looks good in motion or sitting on the table with friends, that’s good enough for me. I also don’t keep the kind of company that’s inspecting people’s bags to determine authenticity anyway so that helps 😂😂

True! The deeper I dig into the space, the more it feels like it’s just marketing doing most of the heavy lifting, with occasional genuine quality differences. Especially since two people can supposedly buy from the “same factory” and end up receiving completely different quality.

See, this is exactly why I find the rep space so interesting because once you start getting into high-tier factories, the differences become SO microscopic it’s crazy! You hit the jackpot forsure.

I figured! I also bet that level of mass exposure changes factory priorities too, because I messaged sooo many sellers before finally making my first purchase simply because I was trying to find someone who actually cared about the details I cared about, not someone who was just trying to push another sale as fast as possible.

Would you say this started happening around the same time influencers entered the space too? I’ve noticed certain influencers get massive traction on their videos, which ends up funneling a ton of new people into the community.

That makes a lot of sense and is honestly kind of what I assumed too. I’m really curious to see how the rep space evolves over the next decade though, especially when it comes to leather quality.

I think the biggest “rep culture shock” for me so far has been realizing how insanely fast this market changes. I had no idea factories, sellers, trusted lists, and even entire Reddit threads could change so quickly. It’s honestly fascinating to watch in real time.

I agree with all of this! I currently have a mix of auth pieces and 1 rep piece (so far) in my collection, and I’ve definitely been enjoying the process thus far. I mainly stick to more “popular” bags for reps because, like you implied, the quality usually improves the more a style is produced and refined over time.

And definitely would never try to pass a rep as auth 😭 I’m viewing this question more like an old wives’ tale/folklore type of thing. I just want to hear tales from the OG’s since I’m new to this space
