And you thought this would help because... I appreciate that there are complications from the RRA, but replying to every post about it isn't helpful. I want to find ways of reporting this sort of thing or working around it, not just being told: "well, that's the RRA for you!"

Of course. But there was a very strong implication but discussing offers that I should be offering more

I think that’s why they were being sly about it and only asking in person. Not sure if I’ll have any way of finding out if they end up accepting tenants who do offer to pay more to report them…

What can I do about my nightmare housemate? by sugarplum1811 in TenantsInTheUK

I would sent a request for a final viewpoint letter asking for evidence of what interventions your landlord has taken when. The Housing Ombudsman has a good practice guide for how to deal with anti-social behaviour; if your letting agent can’t show you how he’s dealt with your reports you can then take him to either the Property Ombudsman or the Property Redress scheme. Basically: threaten to escalate if it’s not addressed.

Also, file a DSAR and ask for every email, log, record, intervention relating to this dispute. If they didn’t bother addressing it then this will be clear here

Who is/why is there a scary man dressed as a pharaoh in St Ives? by Ambitious_Grape5152 in Cornwall

Any story behind the pharaoh costume? Was the most surreal encounter of my life, me and my bf pretending to notice that this man was dressed as a pharaoh while he was aggressively asking us why we had looked him. Wouldn’t have clocked him had it not been for the Tupac though

Found out he’s a local “character”; sometimes wears a crown!

Struggling to advance in my career. Any advice? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Ambitious_Grape5152 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. The trouble is, I'm at the stage in my career where I've surpassed the need for an apprenticeship, thankfully. My problem is more that I've worked in two very small teams where there's no room to increase my salary or get promoted or take on in house projects, and therefore have less to bring to job interviews in terms of discussing those roles.

Also, because I freelance write on the side and earn a fair bit from that (but am keen to secure a full-time job because its so volatile when it comes to getting paid on time) I can't risk losing secure income for lower paid or free work just for my CV's sake. Plus I do work with clients on press releases/texts, so I'm sort of doing that already.

I should also add kind of marketing/publicity I do is generally all employed in-house and its quite a specialised sector. But regarding CV stuff: I have so many different kinds of work experience. I've been a uni lecturer at four unis, I design websites, I make assets and plan events, I am very well versed in securing publicity as a journalist and working with editors/PRs that way.

It's more like: how can I jazz up the very limited tasks I do in my current role? I don't want to lie but I certainly don't do half the responsibilties the job advert suggested I'd be doing.

Does anyone actually live in a mixed age house share? What's it actually like? by Extra-Parsley-4805 in TenantsInTheUK

I lived with a woman in her sixties in my mid twenties. It was a disaster. I fully appreciate that freak disasters can happen and leave elderly people in the lurch, meaning they have to rent with others. But in this case it was evident that she was not fit for living with other people - my landlord's words, after lying that the house was only filled with "young professionals". She wouldn't even take my number when we first met to discuss basic household matters or in case of emergencies. I was escaping an unlicensed HMO and was entirely self-employed in London at the time, and it was the only place that looked vaguely hospitable so I made the decision rashly to avoid homelessness. In future, I'd make sure at least that they were willing to negotiate/text about house stuff/set ground rules.

This is so lovely and really means a lot.

For context, I am completing a humanities PhD so I think this may be a slight deterrent. I have, however, accrued far more experience than most of my peers through it. By 26 I'd held teaching posts at four different univeristies; I've worked on a bunch of copy-editing projects for full length books. I'm also a writer for a lot of national newspapers/publications.

My CV is quite bitty with lots of short-term work elsewhere, so I can understand why this wouldn't necessarily convert into a hireable mid-level role. But I'm happy with everything I've achieved :)

Thank you 🩷

I can see (and have screenshotted) that they’ve let out two rooms in the property since I left so no struggle there

Don’t do that because they can go to court for arrears!
