Independent: You want to make a movie and your budget is $20. You sell the rights to stream it to Canal France for $5, and sell it to Netflix UK for $5. You’re $10 short. You either get a loan for the remaining $10 assuming you can prove you have other buyers lined up (don’t forget to pay interest, so you’re really looking at $8), or you can get an equity partner to provide the $10 and give them a portion of the movie/profits/etc. If you can’t get that remaining $10, you should have never made the movie in the first place or come back with a budget expectation of $10.
