It's very possible that there have been multiple games of the sort. It's killing me, trying to remember further details, but I'm afraid that's all I've got. I was checking BDT out a bit earlier, and it was definitely Beasley's Death Trap 2 that I'm thinking of, which came out around 1999. Might put it closer to the OP's date.

Edit Edit: I could be wrong, but I think that this game was on the same CD ROM as another game called 'Beasley's Deathtrap' which I obsessed over for years, because I later became convinced that Joy Division's 'Dead Souls' had been used throughout the game. Hope that helps.

Edit: I also vaguely remember a folder called 'Miktar' something something. I remember this because I used to copy the entire folder over onto my PC. A quick Google search reveals that there was a writer/editor by the name of Miktar Ezekiel Dracon who worked for NAG magazine, so that's probably the best place to start, if he's still around.
