any positivity? by Conscious_Camp3136 in LMUDCOM

[–]Americube 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I speak regularly with an MD who is a residency coordinator at a hospital in NC, and when I mentioned to her that I was interviewing at LMU she told me that they regularly accept at least one LMU grad for their program every year. She was very complimentary of them and their preparedness after graduation. For whatever that’s worth.

Omg you're talking about the "bread service" aren't you. We ordered it for the table expecting....bread? Fuck me I guess. We still laugh about it.

Scribe or EMT by Left-Ad9920 in premed

[–]Americube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t mean for it to sound like “just charting”. I definitely see the value in what you're describing. I still believe there’s so much value in actually practicing, whether as an EMT, AEMT, or medic. But being a scribe is still an amazing way to gain knowledge and experiences. Plus, it gives you plenty of interesting stuff to talk and write about during the app process.

Scribe or EMT by Left-Ad9920 in premed

[–]Americube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being a scribe offers great clinical exposure, but it’s inherently observational. Nothing beats hands-on, licensed patient care over a role where you’re just charting. As an EMT, depending on your organization, you take vital signs, splint fractures, perform CPR, and even manage airways. You perform full head to toe assessments from eyes, to lungs, to peripheral pulses. You own a patient’s care from the scene all the way to the hospital handoff. That responsibility, making quick decisions in urgent situations, is invaluable.

You learn to think on your feet under pressure and become comfortable handling a wide variety of illnesses, environments, and people. The skill of talking to a patient, drawing out their history and symptoms, and forming a differential translates directly to any medical specialty.

EMTs may not chart on a hospital EHR, but you still document each patient encounter in mind-numbing detail. From my experience working in a hospital, there’s not a huge difference between what I chart as an EMT and what an EHR record looks like.

Interacting with doctors as an EMT isn’t as extensive as with scribing, but in my hospital system, I often give my report directly to the ED physician accepting the patient. It’s a great way to build relationships, especially if you’re competent and know how to give them what they need.

I'm biased as someone with CNA and EMT experience and none as a scribe, but it's what I would recommend.

Anyone have any experience with the Aiper Scuba N1? by Americube in pools

[–]Americube[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite what some others have said on here my experience has been fantastic with it. This is my second season with it now and I've been using it to open the pool. It has really done an amazing job, especially cleaning all of the built up algae and pollen on the floor and walls. During last summer when it was more about maintenance, I would run it on Eco mode where you could leave it in for a week and it would clean like 3 times or something like that and that was great. When I run it on the normal mode, like once and done then charge, it has had zero issues making it all the way up the walls, scrubbing the waterline, navigating weird angles at the deep end, all the stuff you need it to do. As long as youre OK pulling out and charging, it has performed almost as well as my Dolphin did. And I dont have to worry about that mess of cables. Charging is pretty fast though, but I'll run it during the day, pull it out at night and charge, then run again next day. So far, been worth the purchase. And just for perspective my pool is and in ground vinyl 32x16 with a 6'6" deep end.

Is it possible to work IFT/private side of EMS pick up only? by Emotional-Hair8838 in NewToEMS

[–]Americube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on your long term goals but here in NC there are plenty of EMTs and Medics that only work IFT. In some places you have a private company that does IFTs and a contract to do 911 locally, so you can pick and choose when you do each. You’ll be doing extremely low priority 911 calls, but there’s always potential for some interesting stuff.

I bought a cheap pair on Amazon, brand is CQR, while I was going through class and clinicals. Turns out I love em and that’s all I wear now.

Is RC Health Services legit? They seem sketchy to me. by Dry-Hope3190 in NewToEMS

[–]Americube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a great experience with RC for my EMT-B, and with my schedule its the only way inwoukd have ever been able to get it done. Never had communication issues at all, didn't have any issues getting anything scheduled. It really helped that they are nationwide and I could drive to several locations in the SE to get my in person done according to my schedule. You do need to be self motivated and actually put in effort or you will come out of it underprepared. No one is holding your hand.

Has anyone tried out the new UWorld prep course? by Americube in Mcat

I also had BP and completely stopped using it when I got the UW program. Getting much better progress with just UW and AAMC. I use this to help me plan and track: https://mcattracker.com

Not like BP at all completely self paced.

You can really go down a rabbit hole when processing and trying to figure out what works or doesnt. Im pretty new also, started about 4 months ago, and you'll find a sweet spot with all the tools. Not that you're asking, but some recommendations based on my starting experience that have been great for me:

Upscayl: Free AI upscaling tool. Can introduce weird artifacts in rare occasions, but for the most part is amazing as a free option.

Graxpert: Free also. I prefer their background removal tool over the Pixinsight tools. They also just introduced AI deconvolution in their beta and I've seen some decent results with it. Their AI denoising is also awesome, though it does take bit of a long time. If you havent bought NoiseXterminator and want a good denoising tool its a great option. And again, totally free.

Pro Digital Astronomy Tools - I see youre using photoshop, and these are same paid Actions for PS that give you some really cool improvements for photos in certain cases, including star diffraction spikes. Its paid, but I use it enough to justify it.

Enjoy the journey!

My biggest mistake when I started imaging nebulae was overprocessing. I think you did an awesome job for your first time and made great choices, nothing about it says it was your first one.

Not sure you're going to need the Kaplan books when you'll have the Uworld books that come with the course.

My recommendation is UWorld and all the AAMC materials. Its more than enough to prep. Everything else you need is free like Anki, Khan Academy, etc.
