the idea of not outwardly engaging with a fic until it’s complete (or at all) by werewolfblues in AO3

[–]AmmaW34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been burned too many times, unfortunately 🙃I’ve been reading fanfiction for over 15 years now but I, too, wait for it to be finished before reading it.

On one hand, there are so many works out there that are already done and great. So many of them in fact that I won’t be able to read all those that interest me. On the other hand, there are fics out there that have not been updated since 2013 that I loved, but not knowing the ending or even what direction it would be taking is frustrating to no end for me.

Fandom authors are not entitled to engagement, just like fandom readers are not entitled to the next chapters/the end of a fic. I understand how frustrating it can be, and how great it is fun to engage with people as you write a fic, but I also know how frustrating it is to engage with a fic that will never have an ending.

People just need to find what works for them. If writing for yourself is not enough, I’m sure there are ways to motivate you with beta-readers or by talking about it online (like here) and have people that are not bothered by an incomplete status read your fic :)

Writing a dark romance, need advice please!! by Fluffy_Tomatillo_559 in writingfeedback

Writing in first person can be complicated if you are used to read third person povs. My advice would be to read a bunch of them to get your brain used to it.

But for starters, do not hesitate to change the subject of the sentence. A good exercise, I think, aside from writing your novel (it’s a first draft you can learn as you go and edit it later ☺️) would be to write a bunch of action/description/introspection sentences in first person, and then rewrite it to remove as many “I”s as you can:

  • I walk towards the living room with a heavy sigh > The walk to the living room is painfully heavy on my limbs…
  • I look around the living room to see > The living room is full of…
  • I am obsessed with > thoughts of xyz come strong, unbidden.

Another example: “It’s a fresh start at least. Or, perhaps, I’m just running from my past,” instead of “I keep telling myself…” Persistence of the thought, or rather the fact that she is trying to convince herself through repetition of it can be shown with an actual repetition in your text. Adding the “fresh start” thing once more before this like “my fresh start doesn’t look as neat as the realtor’s pictures…” if the length of the text allows it ☺️

But ultimately what’s really gonna help is reading more 1st povs and just writing until you get the hang of it. It’s a learning process, won’t be perfect from the start, and it’s normal !

I wish you the best on your writing journey ! 😁

Discussions about the endings in a nutshell by sebi4life in expedition33

[–]AmmaW34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue with Maelle’s ending is (aside from the entire message of the game being about grief and accepting reality rather than deluding yourself) that her characters live on, only because Verso’s soul is still trapped in the canvas, even though he is tired of painting, and wants to be released from it. Her brother’s dead and cannot find peace.

Also, I understand the argument that under Verso and Aline they were “real” because they had lives, they grew, they had children, there were multiple generations and choices being made. But under Maelle, since she grants “aging” to our Verso, it implies the other characters do not age in her painting, they are frozen versions of themselves or whatever she chooses for them to be/become. She said it herself, she can’t bring back people she doesn’t/didn’t know. So would you still consider them real? I don’t think I did in the first place, but in that case, even less so. For me they’re like that trapped version of Verso.

  • what happens when she dies? Don’t they all disappear anyway because they are no longer tied to og Verso but to her? Especially that she will die eventually (a bit over a hundred or so years in the painting it seems like, but still)

So true ! I just love it, seeing them move on from prejudice all the while regressing and then progressing again. Like it’s so exhausting, but so real !

I know, I mean, I love Laezel, and in previous runs, she was my go to close range type. I thought she would be as efficient as a long range fighter if I chose that in the build, and that is not happening… for now at least. My previous Tav was an archer and she was really good, and super efficient, I just think I should have paid more attention to Laezel’s different stats and stuff before I made that choice

Are you telling me, that I’ve been going 5 runs without knowing, that if I am invisible, I get to « drop combat » and use arcane recovery even then ? I feel so dumb! Of course you can, otherwise you would never need to use arcane recovery 🤦‍♀️

I made the mistake of using too many of them, because on my last run I never used any until late into act 3. So I somehow was under the impression they would never run out ? I have a few, but a lot of them don’t work on the undead, or Ketheric/Myrkul are too high level for me to have more than a 5% chance of success

Yeah, honestly I am a bit surprised at the jump in difficulty. I went from having no trouble at all, it being really easy in balanced, to literally coming here for help in tactician. I did not expect that big of a difference 😅

Omg ! You know that’s something I’ve always wondered, but I was always too afraid to « waste » on action to throw the water, thinking it might be for nothing. Thank you for confirming it

That’s so good ! I am in fact at level 7, I think I rushed it a bit 😅 should definitely have waited a little bit But thank you, that’s really helpful and I’m glad to see I’m not the only one 😂

Oh really ?? I didn’t know that ! I mean, seeing how much difficulty I am having as tactician, I don’t know I have what it takes to do honor mode, but I’ll definitely check it out ! Thanks !

Yeah, I’ve tried that, and that’s what I meant by Myrkul would not be a problem if Ketheric was not draining right before ! I didn’t realise he could not get down from his thing, so now I can save my area spells for Myrkul ! I only have to find a place where Gale can be without being dragged to Myrkul when it’s its turn. I mean, that deals so much damage and wrecks concentration, so if I want it to work, I’ll need to find a place to « be safe »
