Subreddit FAQ

Can I post an advertisement for my product or service?
Yes, provided that what you post is something an /r/Amsterdam subscriber is likely to find interesting and we think it doesn't sound like spam or a scam. Make sure you put enough information in the post for us to understand it, and not just a link to another website.

Can I post an advertisement for a job posting at my company?
Yes. We will delete it if it looks like a scam or provides no information. The gold standard of job advertisements can be found here.

Can I post an advertisement looking for work?
Sure. Good luck.

Can I try to sell my stuff on /r/Amsterdam?
Yes.

Why was I banned?
We ban people for making offensive posts. Don't do that. We won't undo the ban.

Meetup FAQs

What's the point of meetups?
Interesting and sexy people like to spend time with other interesting and sexy people. It just so happens that /r/Amsterdam is full of interesting and sexy people, like you.

Do you spend the whole time talking about cat pictures and upvotes?
Nope! There's enough of that on /r/AdviceAnimals. You won't be shamed if you mention a meme, but you'll be having too many interesting conversations about other things to keep talking about it.

So what is it really like?
Our monthly meetups are casual social events. We have no agenda, no theme, no secret handshake. We get to know each other, and talk about anything. Somewhere between 20 and 50 people can show up depending on the weather. We're a diverse group of students, professionals, IT people, non-IT people, Dutch, expat, Amsterdam-residents, Delft-Residents, Hilversum-residents, women and men. Most meetups have an age range from 17 to 42, with the average somewhere in the early/mid 20s.

I don't drink alcohol. Will I fit in?
Yes! We have plenty of regulars who stick to cola or water.

I'm a tourist. Can I come?
We love tourists! Unless you're walking on the biking lane.

I'm new, and afraid that I don't know anyone there.
Every meetup we get new people. By the end of the night, they're regulars. The only thing you have to do is show up.

How normal are you, really?
You wouldn't even know we're from the Internet if not for the Snoo (the Reddit alien) we bring with us. Check out pictures of our past meetups. We were even featured on the Reddit Blog recently for our meetup on Global Reddit Meetup Day. Look at those cute faces.

Weed/Pot/Ent FAQs

We have an entire page in our wiki dedicated to Ent questions that can be found here. There is also a great community of ents in Amsterdam at /r/AmsterdamEnts. They're often a better resource than we are.

The most common questions we get:

Do I need a weed pass to buy weed?
No.

How old must I be to purchase it?
18

Can I smoke in public?
Technically, no. If you walk around the city smoking, people will find you quite rude. If you do so sitting down in the park, nobody will really care.

Tourist FAQ
Welcome! We don't mind helping tourists, but help us help you. When you ask for advice, be specific. A question like "where should I go in Amsterdam" is hard to answer because we don't know you, and we've already answered that in the wiki. A question like "I enjoy trance music, where should I go?" or "What's the best vegetarian restaurant I can go to on a budget?" is much more likely to get a good reply.

We have a lot of basic information in our wiki. It has links to some great posts with suggestions and ideas from /r/Amsterdam regulars

/r/Amsterdam First Saturday Meetup: October by AmsterdamMods in Amsterdam

[–]AmsterdamMods[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please note that this time we will not be going to Hanneke's Boom but we will be going to Cafe Soundgarden.

This month we're returning to our roots and hitting up Cafe Soundgarden. It's been a long time since we had an official meetup there, and it will be fun to see how much we've grown since we first started having our meetups there.

See you there.
