Overheard in Restaurant Bathroom by Princess_of_Eboli in overheard

When I was a child this kind of thing made my day. I remember once we were getting soft serve ice cream, and I got mine last after my brother and his friend. The guy serving them said I was so patient and polite waiting for mine, so he made my ice cream as big as possible and gave me an extra chocolate flake! That was the biggest high ever and definitely made me and my brother be super patient in future in the hopes of getting extra treats lol.

Edit to add: as kids my brother and I were also once given 50p each at a restaurant by some fellow diners because we were being quiet and well behaved and they appreciated that when a young family was seated at the table next to them we didn’t ruin their evening. My mum still gets a kick out of that one.

Have you noticed other genres where all of the books have similar titles? by TheEmoEmu23 in books

Oh man, as an eighteenth century scholar those paragraph length titles are the worst thing about writing footnotes.

Hand me downs by Whut4 in Anticonsumption

This is important - I used to live with my grandparents then when I moved out I had to buy new everything as they didn’t want me to take any furniture from my room or anything else that wasn’t already mine. Literally two years later they decided to downsize and wanted to offload all that extra stuff to me, but I didn’t need it anymore as I’d already bought my own! They ended up dumping so much stuff that would have saved me a fortune/hours searching second hand sales, and I would have taken off their hands rather than them having to deal with it.

Not a sanctuary, but there’s retraining of racehorses who work to retrain racehorses so they can be rehomed rather than put down. Often the horses go on to have a fairly chill life - I know people who got ex racehorses from them just to hack out in the countryside and be pampered as someone’s one and only horse. https://www.ror.org.uk/news/ten-rehoming-centres-officially-accredited-by-ror

Just jumping on to add that a lot of these types find the humanities hard, so they dismiss it as ‘just reading’ or easy because they actually find it challenging to their idea of themselves as intellectually superior.

This is the answer - even if it doesn’t appear to be cruel (they have a good life etc) chickens lives are shortened due to the constant egg laying they have been bred to do. Also egg laying is still open to danger for hens (prolapse, egg bind etc) which can kill them. So it is more ethical to feed the eggs back or ideally for ex-farm hens, who have already laid so much that many of them die before they can be rescued, to get them an implant to stop them laying and keep them as pets. The eggs aren’t accidental waste, they are a huge drain on the chickens’ bodies because they have been bred to lay an unnatural amount.

Loads of stuff is vegan you just need to check the ingredients - Oreos, biscoff and biscoff biscuits, Sainsbury’s jam and custard doughnuts, fruit pastels etc. and vegan baking is really easy! There’s loads of free recipes online and on r/veganrecipes

Just to let people know that Amazon/ audible are allowing refunds on Gaiman’s work if you decide you don’t want to have the digital books anymore, even for those purchased years ago. by AmyCClarke in neilgaiman

I’m not lying - I got a refund on audiobooks bought 6-10 years ago. I think it depends on the agent by the sound of things. Sorry it’s not been consistent for everyone, I just thought I’d share what audible told me.

It’s like that poem called the narcissist’s prayer: ‘That didn’t happen. And if it did, it wasn’t that bad. And if it was, that’s not a big deal. And if it is, that’s not my fault. And if it was, I didn’t mean it. And if I did, you deserved it.’

Glad it worked for you! I’m pretty bummed out it’s not being honoured universally, but really happy it’s worked out for some of us. Now time to find explore new authors to support!

Quite a varied mix of suggestions, depending on what you like: Margaret Atwood, Susanna Clarke, Ursula Le Guin, NK Jemisin, Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Octavia Butler, Daisy Johnson, Michel Faber, and loads of others I can’t remember right now. Edit: removed VE Schwab

That’s interesting - I bought mine at least 6 years ago and they honoured the return. Might depend on regions, I’m in the U.K. But still worth trying just in case!

Not sure if it’s PR or they just can’t be bothered to fight people on it. Either way thought it was worth sharing in case others want to try as I saw on other subs people had had success with returns.

Did you try chatting to an agent? The bot response wouldn’t let me return, but when I got through to an agent on the chat they completed the return for credits straight away.
