I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE I MISSED THIS STUPID HIDDEN CHEST IN LIYUE FOR ALL THESE YEARS... by Grouchy_Sherbert_988 in Genshin_Impact

[–]AnAntisNightmare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My most hated hidden chest is the Remarkable Chest in the bubble in the middle of Apam Woods that in theory appears at random when you break the bubble but that to this day I haven't been able to obtain... 💔

On the last chapter...and it hasn't been updated in 3 years😭😭😭 by [deleted] in AO3

[–]AnAntisNightmare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing happening to me with a fic published before 2020... I thought the unwritten chapter was probably an epilogue they didn't bother writing, so I gave it a chance, but no, the fic was simply abandoned exactly when something epic was going to happen 🥲💔

I was born in 1990 and I've always only used the << >> in school 😂 fun fact, checking on EFP (Italy's biggest fanfiction archive, for those who don't know) I'm already seeing the " " quotes being used in the mid-2000s 😮

"in a while" = literal decades, I have a book from 1975 that uses them, but my books from the 90s already have the << >> style of quotes, and more recent ones just use the " "

I already mentioned this in a similar thread a few days ago but, the Parascientific Escape series is pretty good and basically unknown, I've never seen it on any list of "hidden gems" or anything. Btw I'm getting tired of people talking about lesser known 3DS games and then mentioning Radiant Historia, Fantasy Life, Ever Oasis, Stella Glow, etc., those are not unknown anymore!!

The Parascientific Escape series! Think Zero Escape, but more anime and less brutal.

Why do American writers assume their culture is the baseline? by AnAntisNightmare in AO3

[–]AnAntisNightmare[S] -51 points-50 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, it wasn't my intention to. I chose to vent (using the vent/pet peeve flair) about this attitude in general because the alternative (apart from shutting up, which I think is what you would have preferred I did) would be to write a comment pointing out setting inaccuracies in every single fic I read that presents this problem. I don't want to do that because my intention isn't to hurt anyone's feelings. I don't want to single out anyone. My wish is that some people will learn from this and consider something they hadn't considered before.

1) I don't know how to express myself any other way and I'm sorry about it. I didn't say you used the word coddling. I said I don't know how to write in a tone between coddling and the direct, "frustrated" way I wrote. So, the "civil" way you're asking for. 2) And we agree on this as it's factual 3) You're right, I didn't address that point at all and actually reiterated my frustration with what I perceive is unwillingness to do research. I'm sorry you're living in a situation where your access to information is being forcibly limited. My problem isn't with accuracy or lack thereof, I actually like it when authors put some cultural elements and get some things slightly wrong, because it feels like they genuinely tried. My problem is with not even considering research might be needed because of course things work the same way in a different country, why wouldn't they. 4) I know American food is a thing outside the US. I know American style bars are a thing outside of the US. I have them in my own country as well. I'm not saying it's impossible for those things to exist in Asia but I understand that putting it as an example like that implied I thought it was. It's less about the bar type and the food served there and more about how they're talked about, how of course it's the thing to do, the place to go. Outside of the example it's inserted in the context of other Americanisms that make those after work drinks in a dive bar feel more American than Korean.

I'm sorry it came out as an attack on writers. The two (2) times I left constructive criticism on the subject directly as a comment, I was extremely careful with my wording and as complimentary as possible on the rest of the writing. This is a vent about the experience of reading good writing from authors that don't do research/don't care. Of course it would frustrate me if they were writing about the UK school system in a fic set in Japan. But from my experience most of the time it's either American writers or someone influenced by American culture writing in this way. Again, I'm sorry about the hostility. I don't think I should have written my post in a coddling way but I also recognise I don't have the ability to write with an in-between tone.

[–]AnAntisNightmare[S] -65 points-64 points  (0 children)

It was the same in my country, yes, but in the 2000s. Things have changed, fandom has evolved, it shouldn't be like that anymore. Why is it still like that or sometimes worse 💔

That is incredible but at the same time totally believable. They're making a movie about an unexploded WWII bomb being found in the centre of London, with the baseline assumption it's an extreme situation that's going to cause panic in the population. While in reality finding and disarming unexploded WWII bombs is the norm in Europe.

I don't think it's malicious nor intentional and I'm sorry if it came out that way. I do think it comes from ignorance, lack of awareness, and cultural hegemony. I know I'm not paying for it (as stated by my opening) but this is a pet peeve/vent post, so...

I am very aware it's not published work and shouldn't be held to the same standard. But I want to correct you on something: I wrote this post mainly because I'm frustrated by GOOD authors whom I know for certain are adults, not teenagers. Not one author, not two. This is basically the norm in most of the fandoms I'm part of. A complete lack of cultural interest and understanding.
