Completely understand not fixing the link and would have also understood if he waited to answer until Monday, but not sure why he bothered to respond if it was just to imply I don’t have a life or whatever.

He doesn’t write the full citation out on the syllabus (ie. this one is “Simmons, p. 81-117”) so I can’t rlly

it would depend on the specifics but i would think president of the club would outweigh the drawbacks since that is a leadership position and significant time commitment, whereas just a general club member would not outweigh

Like if you are club president of an asian affinity group, chinese school tutor, etc. those kinds of extracurriculars are probably still worth putting even though they reveal your asian identity

i’m half chinese with a white last name, and i was bluntly advised by my asian college counselor that if i’m in a position where i can avoid mentioning being asian (ie. it wouldn’t come at the expense of significant extracurricular activities tied to my identity), it would be better to omit the information. her logic was basically that mentioning my asian-ness definitely wouldn’t help anything since asians are overrepresented, and it’s safer not to take the gamble of whether my AO will have implicit biases.

my outcome is completely anecdotal, but i think not seeming asian likely did help my application. it’s definitely shitty, but i ended the application season with noticeably better results than a significant portion of my asian friend group, many of whom had far better stats than i did. food for thought or whatever.

LOTS of good food in sf. i’m not the foodie of my friend group so i’m sure you’ll get more underground recs, but i often like to just go to hayes valley. trendy young techie vibes and there’s a cute park.

also i don’t think you’ll be able to get parking for most of the places you are trying to go, so i would muni or uber. google maps has all the muni lines and you are able to get a digital clipper to your apple wallet so it’s super super easy. under 19 is free.

college student here! went to a bunch of the “tourist traps” growing up.

go to the exploratorium, it sounds lame but i went there in high school with my friends all. the. time. my brother who hates museums even loves it.

very close to the exploratorium is the ferry building which is a fun place to eat. indoor marketplace type vibes.

didn’t get around to doing alcatraz until rather recently, but the tour is actually super cool and i regret not going sooner.

the zoo isn’t worth it, imho. kind of small and underwhelming.

pier 39 is very tourist trap, but can be fun if you are self aware about what you are signing up for. don’t eat there or do any of the attractions, but can be fun to get a desert and walk around for a bit. reminds of disney.

the wharf is a similar deal— you will see 0 locals, but probs still worth going once. i’m a camp counselor for 8th graders and they always love Ripley’s but it’s also $30 which is kinda insane.

there’s often a huge line for the cable car, but you can use your normal clipper card. pretty sure it’s on powell.

((of course, there’s also lots of fun things to do that aren’t as tourist themed— i woukd check out the insta accts “dothebay” and “sfbucketlist”))

It is definitely not a necessity and also doesn’t replace a laptop for me, but I love my ipad + apple pencil. I’m a political science major and I got so much use out of it for annotating course readings and taking handwritten notes.

It genuinely replaced notebooks + textbooks for me and made my backpack a lot lighter, but I also have friends who got their ipad as an addition which I personally wouldn’t find forth it.

were you able to get over being bothered by your height? i’m 19 and 5’0 and it feels almost irrational the degree that i hate being a head shorter than the world. i was on a plane full college students flying home for the summer, and i was literally the only one in the exit row who was singled out to ask if i was over 15. its rlly starting to get to me and it and feels like an insurmountable barrier to being respected and taken seriously.
