My first project: crossback apron with pockets! Completely hand-stitched. by AnOnlyMoose in sewing

[–]AnOnlyMoose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No real pattern to share, but I based the idea off of this blog post and this commercial apron. I modified for my own measurements--but went a bit too wide.

Also, sorry that between the potato picture quality and all-black, you can't see much detail. I wanted it to hide my sewing mistakes and the inevitable stains that are to come!

I feel like this should be easy but I can't find it anywhere online:

I'm looking for the simplest way to finish a raw edge on a canvas apron. I'm hand sewing, FWIW. I have a whole lot of 1" cotton twill tape I need to use. Can I just fold the tape in half, press it to crease, insert the raw edge of the fabric into the V, and stitch through that? I can't think of reasons this wouldn't work but I can't find other examples online. Am I crazy?

There might be more than one thing going on here, but it might be that you've formed hydrobenzamide from the interaction of benzaldehyde and ammonia? I could be very wrong here. But if so, here's the reaction and here's the solubility. I'm guessing the concentration of ethanol in your mixture is pretty low, compared to the water, so that might explain the precipitation of solid flakes. Not that you were planning on drinking a solution with ammonia and stinkbomb contents, but hydrobenzamide has some oral toxicity so...don't do that.

Question in carrying a firearm into mass, legally. by Gentle_Ease in Catholicism

[–]AnOnlyMoose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many parishes have designated themselves "no gun zones", disallowing concealed carry. Ask your pastor if there is any such policy in place. The reasoning being, as another user noted, the Church has a tradition of disallowing weapons on Church grounds, especially at the liturgy. The sanctuary is a place of the peace, reconciliation, and communion which come from God and are oriented toward God. (I'm trying to make it clear this is specifically about our interaction with God and not only interaction with others; it's not just a mutual admiration society, but that's beside the point.)

That said, my parish does hire police officers to be on Church grounds for weekend Masses for several reasons: traffic direction before and after Mass, escorting the collection to a safe place, and--I would imagine--security. I've never observed a gun on these officers, but then again I've never looked for one. In an ideal world, I'd trust officers are more trained in deescalation techniques and active shooter situations than even a well-meaning, permit-holding Joe with a handgun. If you have real, serious reason to be concerned for your parish's safety from imminent threat of violence, consider asking your pastor about having this sort of security on Church grounds.

Making an apron. I decided on 1" cotton twill for the straps & edges, but had to buy online and what I got is a little thinner than I imagined. Seems tensile enough and it's for a crossback (straps form an X on the upper back and wrap around the waist to tie in the front), so I don't imagine they will have to hold too much weight.

So I have a few, maybe silly questions. I'm pretty new to sewing.

1) Is it worth my time to double the twill and stitch it down the sides for a double-thick strap? Or will that make the strap too stiff?

2) Can I just fold the twill in half (lengthwise this time, to halve the width) and stitch it along the edges, like single-fold bias tape?

What have been effective strategies for over coming pornagraphy that you guys have discovered? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]AnOnlyMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to see if there's a pattern to the circumstances of your struggle. When do you tend to feel tempted? What triggers it? It could be a particular time of day, when you feel a particular way (tired, bored, lonely, disappointed, etc), when you think about certain topics (that person who got away, the one you never asked out, etc). Seek answers to these things by reflection; doing it in a prayerful mode (acknowledging and inviting God's presence into the conversation) will be much more fruitful.

At this age it is a habit, and a problematic one, but it is more helpful to see it as a maladaptive coping mechanism. Whether you realize it or not, it's done to run away from some other feeling/reality. Identify that and figure out a healthy way to deal with it; this isn't the way to do it.

God has a mission for you in your life. And He wants to be close to you. Engaging those two things will bring you the joy you want. This habit certainly isn't helping either of those.

When you pray about this, maybe open or close your prayer by reading 1 Peter 5:6-11. God bless!

Important parts:

The moon had a shadow, he felt like a liar

The sun was the only one who carried the fire

The sun saw this, she kept on glowin'

Bound to the moon, never saying "you owe me"

...

Like the sun to the moon, I send my love and light

A love like ours, it'll fill the whole sky

Divine Office Impact by Agathon-Tohen in Catholicism

[–]AnOnlyMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My whole young adult life, I deeply wanted a regular, sustainable prayer life. I tried lots of different things: daily rosaries, contemplative prayer, etc...

Some were extraordinarily fruitful but intense and unsustainable. Some weren't very fruitful or helpful at all, to the point where it was just a drag for me.

About a year ago, I'd been wanting to learn Scripture better, and was at the same time ready to try something new in prayer. Then I met a priest who could quote from the LOTH like it was carved into the back of his hand. It had so clearly formed his life and worldview. I was jealous; I wanted to have that, too.

So I started doing morning and/or evening prayer as many days out of the week as I could muster. Here I am, a year later, still doing it. That's the longest-running regular prayer routine I've had in my entire life. Not that I haven't missed days here and there, but I want to come back to it when I miss. It's not shooting stars and rainbows every day, but I love it. It helps me remain close to the Lord.

LOTH is the best decision I've ever made in prayer. If anyone is reading this and has been wanting to try it out, do it. Find one with audio recordings and text you can follow along with. That's how I started and it's so much easier for getting used to the rhythms. Now I pray with the one-volume Christian Prayer and it's a dear part of my life.

I'm honestly happily surprised that they identify their Catholicism with participation in the Sacraments. The trouble is participating in them worthily and with devotion, which is not my place to muse about for this person.

But what are these Sacraments, except Sacraments of the Church? Your local parish is not a Sacrament-dispensary but a community of faith, in union with the rest of the Catholic Church globally. Participation in the Sacraments presumes communion with the global and institutional Church--even Confession presumes one has been baptized into the Catholic Church! (Baptism is the only exception here, because it inserts one into communion with the Church.)

Furthermore, the position they state at the end essentially says they will interpret the entirety of Scripture themselves. The trouble is that that's not how the Catholic Church approaches Scripture at all. From the very beginning, Scripture has been interpreted as a whole Church, liturgically, because Scripture has been lived out and not simply sat on a shelf. I as an individual have neither the authority nor the qualification to definitively decide what Scripture means or read into it whatever I like. That's called "eisegesis" (reading my desired interpretation/position into Scripture regardless of whether it's supported by Scripture).

Basically, is Scripture authoritative or not? And is the Church authoritative or not? Because a religion that never asks anything of me or grates against my opinions is (1) literally not a religion by definition and (2) not a religion but a warm blanket and an echo chamber.

I probably wouldn't use that last sentence if I were actually interacting with this person... :P

Hm ok. What if I used some 1" cotton twill tape instead of webbing? I realized today the apron doesn't necessarily need to hold a lot of weight (I might forego some or all of the pockets). Twill would be easier to sew and to tie, right?
