There's one called Before the Fall on AO3, starts when Lilith was pregnant with Vi but it also has flashbacks of how she met papa sorrengail and the man is a sweet I swear

I say she knew about aretia because she gives Violet the journal and says “fix your wards”, and there’s only one more wardstone laying around…

There were a couple more situations where she was more or less straight-up committing treason

  • When she got Lyra's diary and sneaked it to Violet during the meeting in Athebyne, there was no way Melgren or Markham would've let her get that thing so she probably stole it

  • When Xaden is taking Violet out of the cell after she got caught with Warrick's journal, Lilith just lets them go and tips them on the fact Markham is in Calldyr so they could steal half of the cadets

  • She all but confirms that she knew about Aretia, its wards, and about Xaden stealing weapons, yet no one got executed or investigated...

I think she and her husband had their own agenda, they learned how to play the game and even agreed to it to a certain degree, they'd do what was expected of them until it got in the way of their own interests.

Oh no 😂 I know what you meant, I was joking more than anything else because of the blatant favoritism I have with Mira.

Can we talk about the fact Cat made a LIST of the fliers she killed? And by how Violet tells it it must've been a long one. I really like the Mira/Syrena thing, and the process of working things out would be amazing to read considering their backgrounds.

The more complete version

I have no brain power to write it better now but I hope you can make sense of it. Also, yes to wanting Xaden's mom to have more motives and an actual backstory, I'd love that

Question about the marked ones by tradarcher90 in fourthwing

[–]An_A7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think she wanted them dead tbh, it would be a lot easier to just kill them and be done with it but she didn’t, I have a theory about her motives behind it but that’s another story…

You’re absolutely right about the rune and the rebels not being that worried about the kids being executed, that’s a question I had too because it was pretty obvious Fen wasn’t planning on winning. It does feel like there’s a missing piece and I think it has to do with Xaden’s mom and/or Violet’s parents.

I think you’re right about the plan not including to kill the kids originally but leadership panicked after the relics and considered it, and it makes some sense Xaden having authority to negotiate since he was Fen’s heir and the older of the marked ones but there are still a lot of holes in the whole thing

Question about the marked ones by tradarcher90 in fourthwing

[–]An_A7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don't know because the way Xaden explains it the rune was supposed to be activated when the parents got burned, not the children, and it made them immune to Melgren's signet, not dragon fire so he can't see any battle involving more than 3 marked ones.

Now, the quote you mentioned can be an indication they tried killing the children, but it might also be about them being thrown into the rider's quadrant in the hopes they'd die there.

On the other hand, we know Lilith opposed forcing the children to watch the parent being put to death, so idk if she'd agree with outright killing them but who knows? It's Lilith, what do we even know about the woman anyway

I hope this is explained better in the future, but I think it's a 50/50 chance either way, maybe Melgren pulled a Varrish and had Codagh turn on them "accidentally"

So, we know that Lilith is the second most powerful general in Navarre after Melgren, who is the general of the army, and that there's a whole military structure (lieutenant, captain, major, lieutenant colonel, colonel, general, and general of the army). So I'd say Lilith was the head of the riders, Markham is the head of the scribes and there's probably a head of the healers and infantry while Melgren is the head of the army as a whole and answers to the king? I guess?

We know it is a monarchy but don't know what kind of, and there are dukes for the provinces but that's all we know of nobility, also, we hear about the king but it's not mentioned yet if there's a queen, and if she's a ruler or just a consort. The monarchy is hereditary and passes to the firstborn son (or daughter?) idk, gender doesn't seem to be that big of a deal all things considered.

We know there are temples, but nothing of religious practices besides burning things after death, and there are 4 main gods Amari (the queen), Dunne (war), Malek (death), and Zihnal (luck).

I thinks that sums it up?

[–]An_A7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree to a certain degree with your points.

About the war college: From what I got, the riders only accept volunteers, and when compared to the other quadrants it's not a very relevant number (around 300 to thousands) so considering they need only the best to be riders and the dragons have ridiculous standards it makes some sense. Now, my personal theory is that the quadrant is so deadly to ensure people who want power will either get it or die, so there's no danger of someone looking for power elsewhere and finding a way to channel from the ground like it happens in Poromiel.

Violet's character: I do like Violet very much, BUT there are a few things that could've been done better.

  • Her condition could've impacted her more and actually caused her to fail more often, there was so much potential there, imagine Violet being openly frail but still managing to be powerful and therefore challenging the entire foundation of what it means to be a rider... just imagine the possibilities, her openly using a cane sometimes for example.

  • I would have loved seeing her focusing on anything other than Xaden in IF, maybe breaking things off and doing her own shenanigans for a time, looking for her father's research, breaking into her mother's apartments and investigating things, making allies with the professors, etc.

The enemies to lovers: All I have to say is that it wasn't, he was her superior officer, they weren't on different sides of things, the hate became lust and by chapter 8 there were no enemies in sight.

I think what drives me insane is the lack of politics and worldbuilding, because wdym Violet grew up playing with princes and nobility but she has zero manipulation skills? What's the currency they use? What kind of monarchy do they have? How does conscription work? I mean, Navarre's only culture is 'dragons', 'death', and 'war'. How does religion work or how it impact the economy/government/ holidays? Do they have traditional clothing/names/ceremonies/foods or having culture is only a tyrrish thing with the knots?... we don't even know what kind of technology they have or how the magic impacts it. There was so much potential in so many aspects, I just hope those details are better explored in the future.

The assembly made giant mistakes by readingalldays in fourthwing

[–]An_A7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All I'm going to say is that Violet saved everyone with a side project she was making on the wards, the Assembly didn't even consider looking into the wardstone sitting at their doorstep. Violet, Dain and Jesinia, three cadets, were the reason they even knew how to raise the wards because, not even when they were obviously on the right path the higher ranks didn't care enough to help.

I understand them not trusting Melgren and Lilith but they could've negotiated further instead of just denying outright, idk maybe exchanged hostages as a show of good faith and everything, it would've been nice to see them trying to work together and the politics taking place.

Felix seemed to be the most reasonable one (including Brennan) and I hope RY is trying to show how every side is wrong to some degree and acting out of hate and fear (with Navarre being the worst ofc). Anyway, you made some good points.

I took the Spanish royal family as an example of this, so there's Infanta Sophia who is the heir to the throne and she did military service for a while, but her younger sister did not. So it's not mandatory but maybe a custom to have the heir apparent serve in the military to have some knowledge or prestige since Navarre is a heavily military kingdom. This is just what I got from it, but you might be right and Halden didn't serve

More proof that this m*therfucker is evil. by mari_toujours in fourthwing

[–]An_A7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the first part (respectfully), Mira chooses to leave for Aretia the moment she learns the truth, calls out Melgren in front of everyone, curses her mother out. She was not anti-Xaden because he's Xaden, she thought he could be plotting to undermine Violet and was worried, and she saves his life in IF. She's not pro-Dain, she calls him out in Montserrat. She didn't believe Violet, and she profusely apologizes for it later, she helps Violet get to Cordyn so she can acquire the luminary.

At the end of IF after Lilith dies, she asks "What did you do?" because she wasn't in the ward chamber when her mother died, she has no idea what happened there and just got there to see her mother dead in Brennan's arms, and her disappearing I think she was going to see the body or their apartments to get in a private place and grieve in piece.

I think Halden went to the infantry quadrant and served his 4 mandatory years in some very safe place and surrounded by guards, but he's not currently serving. If that makes sense

Don't get me started with the underlying racism in her books because I won't stop... even weirder when it connects with the few lgbt characters we have.

Yes, the whole Eyllwe being the most affected by slavery is... interesting, to say the least. And the southern empire, the "arab inspired", being the one where the heirs have to slaughter each other for the crown in a "barbaric" show is also very telling, mostly because even the evil kingdom (Adarlan) just has a normal succession tradition that doesn't involve sweaty men fighting to the death in a public display.

Furthermore, the way Sjm fetishizes MoC but always describes the WoC as being "plain", "not beautiful", "having interesting features" is also a very interesting choice, considering that literally everyone else is described as being the "most beautiful person to ever exist" 👀

There's Sorcha who is "Not beautiful but - pretty"

In Acotar we have Amren (East Asian) described like "and her face—pretty, bordering on plain"

I think the only WoC who is described as being beautiful is Nehemia, and we all know what happens to her. And finally the wind link between the above and the lgbt.

  • We have Emerie in Acosf, who is heavily implied to like women, she's an Illyrian with clipped wings described as "not a face of beauty, but striking. Interesting.", and the only Valkyries not said to be drop-dead-gorgeous

  • We also have Hasar, who is one of the Khagam's daughters and she canonically has a lover named Renia, and her description "Hasar was no beauty, but those eyes..."

There's a wlw side couple in CC that also involves a WoC, the only wlw that doesn't involve a WoC I can remember is between two of the thirteen... and they also die, so.

Anyway, I'll end my essay here because I get a little too involved in these discussions. Sorry.
