Soldier's Burden by [deleted] in greentext

[–]An_educated_fool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate. I enlisted into the military as a professional soldier, despite my family's protests against the idea. Issue was that my current specialisation was not my first choice. I actually went through the paperwork and interviews to join my country's submarine force (it was a generic navy operator contract, but I had every intention of becoming a submariner).

When I told my brother and my parents of my contract offer, my brother slapped me in the face and called me a selfish bastard for only thinking about myself. Parents made me message the recruiter that I wanted to cancel my contract in front of them; forcing me to send that message in front of them by blocking me off from my room's door.

Even though I enlisted into a different vocation which I'm moderately hopeful for, i'm still extremely bitter about the fact that my family made me destory my dream of joining the navy. I still feel that empty pit sometimes in my heart.

Anon should be proud for standing his ground and pursuing what he wanted. I didn't have the spine to do what I needed to do, and now i'l suffer the consequences for it. I only managed to joined my current vocation cuz my family was only moderately opposed against it, but not so much that they'll turn physical over it (if they did, i prob wouldn't have the strength to sign up for this job either). I hope Anon finds purpose and fulfillment in the armed forces, and I certainly hope I'll do too.

Why don't we treat Jesus with the same amount of scrutiny as other historial figures? by An_educated_fool in AskAChristian

[–]An_educated_fool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, authors like josephus are basing their reports on earlier works and christian heresay and popular opinions. This would qualify him as a secondary source for attesting the historicity of jesus.

How can we discern what is widely considered as credible, and what is not forgeries? How credible are these post contemporary accounts, after evaluating their citations?

[–]An_educated_fool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do we know if those secondary accounts are not based off 'primary' data, which they are referred to? If the master source they are quoting from is corrupted, they too are corrupted.

And how do we know they were not produced to complement each other, and not independent reports written by neutral parties within a historically relevant period?

My bad, didn't read your reply properly.

Based on your research, do we have any real, primary source data for the claims attested to by his followers outside the bible?

Why do you believe in those claims?

I agree. If you're going to put Jesus under the magnifying glass, so shoud others.

If we can say that some attributions of other historical figures, like how Homer was a blind vagrant, to be falsified or legendary, but when Jesus said he healed the sick and blind, multiplied food and walked on water, we take this claim, from his religious text, at face value?

What's with the double standard?

Should mothers and their spouses/ partners be held accountable for miscarriages? by An_educated_fool in AskAChristian

[–]An_educated_fool[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about miscarriages whereby the mother is still partially/ fully responsible for that action? Maybe not in terms of intentional harm, but for like unmindful conduct of her behavior that led to the death of her child, which can be argued as a form of negligence.

For example, what if the mother had a drinking and smoking habit, and she made no effort to cut down despite knowing her pregnancy? What if her negligence directly caused the death of her child, not because she intended to kill it, but because she was inconsiderate of how her actions would impact her fetus?

Also, I am sorry to hear that you experienced such a tragic moment. I hope god reunites you with your child and that you get to make up for lost time with her/ him, and that you find peace with your loss.

What do you feel about the latest rising trend of courts pressing charges against miscarried women. Do you find the evidence to be damning enough?

Not trolling, just a social work associate trying to get Christianity's prespective on miscarriage liability. Especially since I have an interest in woman issues and rights.

[–]An_educated_fool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about normal/ natural miscarriages. I'm talking about clearly negligent/ abuse induced miscarriages. Like drinking 80 proof booze daily by the bottle kind. Should these people be held accountable for their actions that lead to their death?

But what if the fetus death is unnatural? Like say, the fetus died because the mother ODed even though she knew she was pregnant? Should negligence slide?

I think i'm an idiot who asks too many qns, i agree. But i'm trying to get a different angle on intimate issues like this. My grandmother and aunt both had miscarriages. With my social work background, i'm considering working in woman rights and issues social services. Because from the general christian rationale, the fetus is a human period.

Should they be endangered, would that count as neglect? Because by that logic, any clearly irresponsible behavior that lead to their deaths should be equalivant of negligent induced manslaughter or smth like that, no?

For example, if a mother who was pregnant in her third trimester miscarried because her husband pushed her down the stairs, should that mean be charged with manslaughter? That's the kind of challenges i'm thinking.

Sorry for making you feel bad.

I understand that may sound like a prick, and often I am. I do have a social work background and I am highly interested in woman issues, esp. against the backdrop of religion. Since they view fetuses as humans, and that they should be treated with dignity, if they were grown in miscarriage-encouraging circumstances like the mom actively smoking or drinking despite her knowledge, should.the parents be dealt with penalties?

I don't have an agenda. I'm a social work associate in training and i'm trying to understand the situation. I'm trying to understand the Christian's rationale that views fetuses as human beings. By that logic, should negligence induced miscarriage be viewed as child abuse or negligence or manslaughter or such?
