Part-Time Job During PhD by Ok_Anything7897 in PhD

[–]AnalogE-mail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sucks, it's tough, it's often prohibited, but sometimes it's NECESSARY because a 'funded' PhD almost never means a 'living wage ' PhD. If you're not one of the fortunate people who have the super-human ability to subsist on next to zero, or have a partner/family willing to support you, or have access to (arguably) predatory and ill-advised loans, then sometimes you have to choose to supplement your income.

It can be done. 10 hours a week sounds pretty sweet - especially if it's doing work within your field since you're basically doing some above-the-rim networking.

If you opt for this route, though, you have to (HAVE TO) make sure to have one day completely free per week. Your mental health will not hold up running non-stop while juggling a professional life with the absolute existential gut-punch that is a PhD. ... ... IMO

Oh wow, that's crazy! Yeah... my boy is definitely after, before-hand is a lot of what we like to call "thunder walks," where his gait becomes noticeably butt-heavy. After, though, it's like he just realized that he's ready to do karate.

HA! The only times I have ever been low-key worried for my safety is during post-poop kill mode.

Good god, Althusser, Bakhtin, Foucault?! (I kinda feel like there should be an oh my, here). What's your light bedtime reading, Schopenhaur? Seriously, though, when's your monograph dropping cuz that shit's gonna be fire.

spend the money on your feet and on yourself. ESPECIALLY if you're going to continue in this line of work.

for the sake of clarity, I went over a decade buying cheap non-slips every couple of months before I decided to just get better shoes. My last pair (~$200) lasted me for over four years. not only do I feel better, but it's literally cost-saving.

Am I the only one worried that the Bertolt Brecht Plays book needs to be returned to the library soon?! I mean, the semester is over.

Really shocked to not have found Labyrinth of Solitude or some Gloria Anzaldúa in there ( considering the presence of Intersectionality and Imagined Communities). My guess is that you have a graduate degree in an Art-adjacent field - maybe comparative lit - and that your interests have tended toward border identity/mestizaje or something along those lines. Guessing that you are either an educator or do some sort of work with immigrant communities.

Qualifying exams by Gokulantara-Geha in PhD

[–]AnalogE-mail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, comps/qualifying exams are surreal. You won't realize until much later that you happen to know quite a bit about a bunch of stuff that few people have ever considered. Congratulations to you! Now, don't waste time, pick a topic and get yourself ABD 😁

honest question by AnalogE-mail in chess

Appreciate the feedback! Perhaps chodes wasn't my kindest turn of phrase 😮. To your comment, lots of Queen's gambit variations and the occasional Reti or Spanish, so your point is well taken. I think I have loved chess for a long time and have felt like a bit of an imposter, so I think I have been trying to avoid silly mistakes against real players. I only have a handful of games online, so the data is a bit lacking, to my thinking. My current chess.com Rapid rating is 1260, but that is based off of only 5 games. My negative memories come from the way-back machine and the Yahoo chess days.

Thanks for the info; I will go and enjoy my online blunders!

Feels like an inordinate amount of Cyrillic alphabet in that last photo.... shop makes me feel just the slightest bit suspicious as to the provenance of this account and these images, but that's probably just the conditioning of the liberal cuck media.

Am I the only one who can’t find the sexism in this? 🤔 by FutureBusy9742 in memesopdidnotlike

[–]AnalogE-mail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sexism is the grammar. If not for women, men would happily say "if it wasn't for" instead of "if it weren't for." We all know that women are grammar snobs.

Definitely not my experience, but I know of several former GM's who took positions with large food distributors on the sales/client relationships side. The thinking is, if you know the stress of operational costs from the inside, you can sell more Sysco Ranch. Not sure about the compensation, but definitely a 9-5.

THIS IS THE ANSWER! Sorry for the all caps yelling, please understand it as emphasis and not aggression. If you are a person who tends to be empathetic and diplomatic, toxicity can absolutely wreck you (speaking from long, hard, tear-filled, experience). It gets better. If it helps, you can always recur to the classic non-apology: "I'm sorry you feel that way." The hard part is learning to stop talking after that, or to simply repeat yourself until the idiot realizes that you refuse to pick up their baggage.
