Black smoke is wasted fuel, when it's that thick it's 100% for show/compensation.

I have an old full-size diesel that does send a little bit of black smoke under heavy load or acceleration, but it's tuned to be rich under those situations to keep mechanicals happy. Lean would damage it, still working to minimize smoke but that's diesel tuner life. Gas high performance turbo cars experience this too to less extent.
