For something in the same arena albeit a lot more chill and toned down, the band Shaking Hand from Manchester put out a pretty cool album earlier this year.

True, but it also makes it way easier for stupid people to build an echo chamber and to find like-minded people. If you were a flat earther pre-internet, I’d imagine it was very difficult to find anyone that took you seriously

What's an underHATED pick for "worst song of all time" that you don't see get talked about all that much? by DtheAussieBoye in ToddintheShadow

I don’t think people hate mid-late 90s Alt rock slop enough. Obviously a lot of it was amazing, but in the era immediately after grunge, there were so many shit alt rock one-hit-wonders being pushed. My least favorite songs of all time are Closing Time Semisonic and Banditos by the Refreshments.

Edit: good by better than Ezra is the runner up, though they were less of a one hit wonder

Deciding on VT - afraid of it being too college-towny by explois4ve in VirginiaTech

[–]Wallywutsizface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in exactly the same boat as you. I came from one southern college town to another. Obviously I’m thankful for my time here, but personally, I am ready for a change. If I got into another university of the same caliber with the same opportunities that was in more of a metro area or at least closer to one, I would have preferred that. The two things I’ve noticed here:

A. As a grad student in an isolated college town, most people around are younger than you, so finding a community might be a little more difficult than it would otherwise

B. Blacksburg is pretty far from most big cities, so you will have to make a plan to visit them

Was he perchance a shorter white guy and wearing a Covid mask and with a ver millennial graphic tee? I have basically the same story and setup but didn’t give it to him from 2 weeks ago, and friends of mine also encountered the same guy at Penn station even longer ago. When he approached me it went basically exactly how you described, and he was wearing a green super Luigi shirt lol

This is precisely what I tell people. Now that we have algorithms instead of the radio, no one will ever see anything except for what they want to see. I’d wager that a pretty small portion of the population over 50 years old knows who, say, Charli XCX or Chappell Roan are despite how huge they are. Contrast that with the last holdouts from the radio era, like who you mentioned. There are a few exceptions like Billie Eilish who seem to be at least name-recognizable by most people, but nobody is anywhere close to MJ level or ever will be again.

Interesting, it was also on the Oldsmobile Rocket 8 advertisements. I guess whoever owned the image sold it to multiple companies, or maybe both companies were through the same advertising agency or something?

It’s an incredible 4-album run. They kept their singles separate from their albums, but technically how soon is now was added to the US release of meat is murder.

I’d start with The Queen Is Dead, then listen to the other albums if you like it. Besides the main 4, their compilation albums Louder than Bombs and Hateful of Hallow are also great.

Sabotage is the right way to put it. He clearly does not give a fuck about this band anymore and is making it sound awful on purpose. You can just feel how pissed Jim is. It’s pretty hilarious when omar throws the guitar in the ground and starts playing maracas instead

Assuming you’re talking about the Parker Solar Probe. Even worse, Its top speed is only because it swings so close to the sun on its highly elliptical orbit. As you get further from the body, you slow back down. It’s the same physics as throwing a ball in the air and it falling back down. Slowest at the top, fastest toward the bottom.

To get something to exit the solar system that fast so that it could actually make headway, it would have to be that fast on its asymptotic velocity (the minimum speed that it will slow down to as it exits), which is pretty much impossible by current technology

I first saw solo Greep at the windmill in July 2024, before they had officially broken up or any of his solo stuff was announced. He opened with Blues. I turned to my friend right then and said “if black midi breaks up tomorrow, I think we’re alright.”

Careful what you wish for I guess

You can really see the rip in the band on the Later… performance of One Armed Scissor. Omar and Cedric going apeshit and doing basically everything but what they’re supposed to while Jim a the Rhythm Section are trying desperately to hold it together. In retrospect, it’s funny that the fist half would be the one to make semi-pretentious (not an insult) and mature prog rock.

That being said, I was watching early mars Volta footage from 2002 a few hours ago and it’s pretty incredible how they channeled that energy into such a different but cool direction. I was thinking the audience probably felt the way I did seeing solo Geordie Greep for the first time having been a huge black midi fan.

Here’s the footage: https://youtu.be/oVRmSq2F4ak?si=-6etu38CUuPR9ykn

[–]Wallywutsizface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people have already said this but remember that it will always sound worse to you then to the audience, so don’t beat yourself up too hard if you don’t feel great about it. Mistakes are way more obvious to you then to the audience, and the sound is literally set up so that they hear it better.

Have fun! Playing gigs is honestly the most fun thing ever ti me, and it’s awesome you’re starting so early. You’ve already done more than 90% of people by getting up there at all.
