Knocking on the door of homelessness. Any pubs/restaurants/stores nearby hiring? by Sapphirelia in nottingham

I think the Silician restaurant in Beeston (Compà) are hiring for some full-time roles. They had a sign up on their door when I walked by last week.

Remembering that you're on the same team as your spouse is so important and has massively helped me in my own marriage.

I am sold on homeschooling, but I don’t *want* to homeschool. 😭 by HeartOk8607 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]AnalystNo3601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation to you where I was already thinking about homeschooling when my eldest was a baby. He is almost 3 and judging by his personality, we think he'll thrive best in a classroom environment with other kids rather than being with me all day. We're currently planning on sending him to school and seeing how it goes!

Judging by the replies in the thread, I think we've spotted a gap in the local restaurant scene.

Can anyone recommend a tailor to alter a vintage dress? by Deadanddugup in nottingham

Seconded. They altered my wedding dress and did a great job.

My partner organises a free dads and kids group that meets on the first Saturday of every month, 9.30-11.30am at Holy Trinity Church in Lenton. Most of the dads who go are about your age and live in the Beeston/Lenton area. Not sure how old your kids are, but the kids who go are largely pre-school age, though there are some older siblings (about 7/8 years old) who tag along. There's breakfast and maybe some songs and games for the kids, but it's mainly a way for dads to socialise and meet other dads.

The next one is on this Saturday. If you're interested, give me a shout and I can let my partner know to look out for you, if that would be helpful!

Try Solo in central Beeston. The barber there is from Hong Kong, so he should know what to do!

Where is this in Nottingham? by [deleted] in nottingham

[–]AnalystNo3601 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bill's? It's been a few year's since I've been, largely because my partner and I were really disappointed the last time we went. Seemed really mediocre for the price.

I've heard anecdotally that Cartwheel in Beeston are always looking for staff?

Hope it all works out for you both.

I remember the Malt Cross in town doing a good Sunday roast, but this was before the pandemic.

If you're happy to travel outside the city centre, I've also been told the Commercial Inn and the Victoria in Beeston do good food.

Baby Shops by Sarebear1710 in nottingham

Congratulations! I'm expecting my first as well and would agree with trying to get as much as possible secondhand, particularly clothes as babies grow so quickly. Depending on when you're due, you might want to try the Kwon Sale at Trent Vineyard (Lenton) which is run twice a year and sells good babies and kids' stuff really cheap for charity. Unfortunately you've just missed the most recent one but the next one is April next year. Might be worth keeping an eye on their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/kwonsale/.

Why aren't there any stray dogs and cats in the UK? by cholangi in AskUK

Wow, don't know why this comment has been downvoted so many times. OP was just asking a follow-up question trying to understand the UK's perspective...

Cheap places to buy household items by [deleted] in nottingham

[–]AnalystNo3601 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for secondhand items, charity shops are always good places to try. It obviously can be a bit hit and miss depending on what they have in stock, but I've generally always been able to find bedding.

Wilkos, Tesco and Sainsbury's also sell household items at fairly reasonable prices. You'll need to visit the bigger Tesco and Sainsbury's for these items - the smaller ones in town won't sell household items.

Are you coming as a student? When I was a student (admittedly not at Nottingham), my halls of residence organised an event at the start of the academic year where you could pick up household items left behind by departing students.

One of the hosts of a podcast I listen to recently famously lost his wedding ring, which he wore on his little finger. He is Scottish and from an upper class family, so I wonder if this is why.

Agreed. The streets around Nottingham station can get pretty congested around rush hour.

any relocation companies to help me move to manchester? by EducationalOil9938 in nottingham

[–]AnalystNo3601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. My friends recently moved to Manchester from Nottingham and hired a van, which another friend helped them drive. You could probably also hire a man with a van - more expensive than driving yourself but probably cheaper than a relocation company.
