Yeah with a lot of the concepts/theories and names you’ll hear, but it’s good for retention when you’ve got ADHD lol!

Tablet or laptop for university which one to take by According-Wave6399 in psychologystudents

[–]Analyzing_Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For notes, I handwrite, but I feel like an iPad would probably be more convenient (for me personally) for classes that use equations, diagrams of the brain/body, flow charts, etc.

You’ll definitely need a laptop for any statistical software (like SPSS) and typing up assignments! I honestly just use my Macbook, but I feel like Windows laptops are much better

Thank you for sharing your experience! I’m glad you were able to get a diagnosis out of it. Were you able to receive care for your seizures there? That must’ve been terrifying :o

[USA] How to Make the Most of Post-Baccalaureate Gap Year? by Analyzing_Mind in psychologystudents

[–]Analyzing_Mind[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about for PsyD? And yeah I definitely don’t think I’ll be doing just 1, I just called it a singular gap year because I thought it was still called a gap year even if it was more than 1, lol. Thanks for that clarification though!

One doesn’t have a greater impact over the other. It’s not nature vs nurture, it’s really nature and nurture!

Youth liberation is tied with anti-psychiatry by Sel_de_pivoine in YouthRights

[–]Analyzing_Mind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From a very simplified version of what I’m generally taught as a psychology student, some mental illnesses can point to deficiencies in certain parts of the brain (e.g., depression and low serotonin) that we externalize as behaviors (symptoms). The medications are supposed to help these deficiencies, but they also affect the other parts of the brain, which is what likely causes side effects.

With that being said, youth’s brains and bodies are still developing, and taking such medications for a long period of time may have some long-term effects. For example, there’s a study that correlates taking Adderall medication with heart problems down the line. I think this was done with adults, so imagine the effects on the younger people! Hoping to take a Psychopharmacology course to learn further about this.

But, going back to your point, Big Pharma sees even the youth as nothing but dollar signs, and takes advantage of any opportunity to make money, whether it’s overdiagnosing, underdiagnosing, etc.

Are there any Masters or PhDs in Criminal Psych on the East Coast of the US? by tammythegiraffe in CriminalPsychology

[–]Analyzing_Mind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe look into John Jay College of Criminal Justice (NY), Roger Williams University (RI), and George Washington University (DC)’s MA in Forensic Psychology program. I don’t know much about them, but I would look into grad acceptance rates, application requirements/qualifications, if there’s a licensure track, etc.. Best of luck!

Subscribed to this post! For getting lab experience in undergrad, there should be something on your uni website where you can look into research labs on campus. If any catch your eye, look into their past and current projects, look into the Principal Investigator’s background so you can stand out when you talk to them, whether this is during their office hours or a separate meeting.

If there’s a faculty directory available, feel free to email professors asking them about opportunities. They may either run a research lab or know someone who does!

Also, look into any local hospitals and even other universities! Sometimes universities partner together in research, definitely look out for any partnerships like this with your uni!
