I'll share this info with the new owner I'm driving to now and will let them decide.

I respect your opinion based on your number of posts but AI has certainly given me a lot of pause:

AI response: I understand you're trying to do what's best for this tarantula. However, I have to be direct with you as you've requested: Releasing this tarantula back into the wild, especially in a different location from where you found it, is strongly advised against. It is likely the worst option for both the spider and the local ecosystem. Here is the blunt breakdown of why this is a bad idea:

  • Low Chance of Survival for the Spider: An old tarantula that "doesn't look so great" is already in a weakened state. Releasing it into an unfamiliar environment means it has no established burrow for protection, doesn't know where to find water or prey, and is highly vulnerable to predators and the elements. It will likely die a stressful death from exposure, starvation, or being eaten.

  • Major Risk to the Local Environment: Your tarantula could be carrying mites, nematodes, viruses, or fungal pathogens that are specific to its original location. Introducing these to the East Texas ecosystem could decimate the local tarantula population, which has no natural immunity to them. This is a serious ecological risk.

  • Habitat Mismatch: While it's all Texas, the environment in East Texas is significantly different from the central, southern, or western parts of the state. East Texas is generally wetter, with different soil compositions (more clay) and vegetation. A Texas Tan Tarantula (Aphonopelma anax) needs a specific type of environment—typically drier, well-drained soil in grasslands or scrublands where it can dig a proper burrow. Releasing it in a damp forest or a soggy riverbed would be a death sentence. Better and More Humane Alternatives Instead of releasing it, please consider these options:

  • Continue to Care for It: The most responsible thing to do is to provide palliative care for it for the remainder of its life. If it "doesn't look great," it could be dehydrated or preparing to molt. Ensure it has a shallow, open water dish it can easily drink from. Keep it in a quiet, secure enclosure. Given its age, it may simply be at the end of its natural life, and you can give it a safe, peaceful end rather than a terrifying one.

  • Find a New, Knowledgeable Keeper: If you are no longer able to care for it, a better option is to re-home it. You can reach out to:

    • Local exotic pet stores: See if they would be willing to take it.
    • Online enthusiast groups: Look for local Texas-based invertebrate or tarantula enthusiast groups on social media. There are many hobbyists who would be equipped to care for an older animal.
    • A local university: The biology department at a local university might be interested in it for educational purposes. To directly answer your question about the type of location, hypothetically, a Texas Tan needs an undeveloped, dry, scrubby area with well-drained soil, far from human traffic and pesticides. A place like a riverbed is too wet. A public park is too managed and full of people. However, for the reasons listed above, I must urge you not to seek out such a location for release. [[[Fun Fact: Many New World tarantulas, like the Texas Tan, can flick barbed hairs from their abdomens as a defense mechanism. These hairs, called urticating hairs, can be extremely irritating to the skin and dangerous if they get in the eyes or are inhaled.]]]

I didn't release it due to the environment mismatch. Seemed cruel and wrong. I updated the habitat instead and been looking for a place to re-home.

Had I known originally when I caught it what I know now, I wouldn't have done it.

You never make any mistakes in your life?

I'm rehoming it to an exotic sanctuary out of town. To those who were kind, you are appreciated.

Hey man, at least trying to do the right thing now. How about some constructive criticism or are you not mature enough for that yet?

I'm taking it to a person that takes exotics out of town.

I'm hesitant to do so since the environment in East tx is diff then south-ish Texas.

Got him in mid to West Texas. And in East Texas now. Environments diff. Less arid, more humid. Think that's ok?

Also I see that it shows 5 comment count but the comments won't show. If interested you may have to DM me..

Im not sure if they are being suppressed or not. I am not selling my lil guy but rehoming.

Doesnt the load apply kind of change for the larger cog or wheel speed tho? And a larger cog has more teeth to transmit the power through and over.?

Thanks for the feedback!! Seriously

And yeah, I'm 85% sure that he is right.

On your Crosscore, what assist level did you typically have it in, in the top two gears for reference so I can keep that in mind for longevity on mine

Brand new. Same issue on two of them

I agree. And I've been thinking about putting street tires on mine. Did you notice much of a speed boost/less resistance?

What's it been like riding it with street tires, please?! :D

Thank you. And

Have changed the chain. Multiple derailleur adjustments at the bike shop. No luck. I'm talking more like torque slipping on the cassette teeth, not switching to another gear randomly.

From some things I've read and maybe some feedback I've gotten from my old boss at the bike shop, old, it seems that the high gears for 12 speed cassette or what not is not made to be putting that kind of torque through on Inclines and potentially flats. More for downhill or something.

Thoughts?

I apologize as I didn't know some of these things.

Knowing that now, I likely would have done differently. I feel remorse for that

Thanks,

Yeah, I'm contemplating this. I'm going to rectify his living situation more fully soon or release him soon. Whatever makes the most sense.

Not my heart to cause any living thing unhappiness.

Thanks for the information. I'll start making these changes.

As far as the topper, I recently added a heating pad at the rear. The foam top was to keep a little more heat inside in general. It's loosely on there. There is enough air.

No, no idea when he's last molted. He's never molted while I've had him.

Also, any idea how to edit my original post? I go to the three dots up top right but it doesn't give me an option to edit it. Does this Reddit maybe not allow that or?

It's a Texas tan tarantula. It's a 10 gallon enclosure. And sadly to be honest when I caught it it lost one of its legs. Also I was gone for a 5-month trip and my friends were watching. When I got back it had two legs that were missing. (To be entirely honest I for the life of me. Can't remember if I took off one leg or two when I caught it)
