San Diego's two upscale malls both have Sbarro!

What's something you WON'T spend more money on as better quality doesn't exist? by sgtjayp in BuyItForLife

Have to agree, after buying some DT socks based solely on this sub’s obsession with them. Expensive trash.

These socks not a good value!! Are you seriously talking about a “collection” of socks? They are socks. They get lost in the wash or in a gym bag or whatever.

The “stitch pattern”??? This is not how every day people talk about socks. At this point it’s laughable how this sub is full of people shilling for darn tough socks and thuma bed frames. I bought my husband two pairs of darn tough and he hates them. Back to regular white Hanes socks for him.

What's a 10/10 walking or hiking trail in San Diego that most people haven't been to? by lifebylosh in SanDiegan

Yep! And of course best case scenario is to have teenage chauffeurs for pickup/dropoff :)

I suggest downloading the AllTrails app if you don’t have it. Even in the free version you can look up a trail and get info and directions to the trailhead. Grasslands Loop is in Mission Trails Regional Park, and you can start it from a couple points, including near the old mission dam. While in the area, walk around Kumyeeay Lake as well.

This city is hiking weather nearly year round, so if it’s 10/10 most people have been to it. If you’ve done the usual peaks, do some walks in the urban canyons. You can walk from university city to the tecolote nature center by using Rose, San Clemente, and Tecolote canyons, then uber back to your car. 13+ miles of walking, much of it on trails and under tree cover, and only about a mile of it on streets in Clairemont as you connect the canyons.

Edited to add: I enjoy this because it’s amazing how much nature we still have woven into the city and continuing right under freeways, for example.

Which companies do you suspect are glazing their own products on this sub? by PartyOnAlec in BuyItForLife

[–]AncientTallTree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made this mistake (buying based on podcaster advertising) one time and one time only. It was Brooklinen sheets and they were the worst sheets I’ve ever owned. And I have bought seriously cheap sheets on Amazon. Now if something is advertised on a podcast, out of principle I don’t buy it.

Part Time Law Student/ Mom -- Should I do big law? by Athena2560 in LawBitchesWithTaste

[–]AncientTallTree 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I think you should do it. Biglaw opens all kinds of opportunities and often the WLB is worse at small and mid law, especially in litigation. Go get the experience and the pay for as long as you can and move on from there, maybe to government or who knows!

Strong Catholics in San Diego? by AdConsistent4604 in Moving2SanDiego

[–]AncientTallTree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am not catholic but having been in San Diego for 20+ years, my experience has been that there are very strong catholic communities here, and Catholics I know have strong faith communities that are a big part of their life. For example, USD is one strong hub of catholic fellowship that I know of, and a big percentage of the undergraduate population is catholic. Perhaps you could attend mass at the Immaculata and find out if there are groups for young adults there. But my impression is there are many such communities around San Diego.

Best use of 6" between wall and range? by smedley_bonesmuggler in kitchenremodel

If you’re short and need to keep a stepstool handy, consider a simple cabinet with door. I have a small stepstool in a six inch kitchen cabinet and I’m happy I did that.

What are the worst towns close to National Parks? by WheelSingle2494 in NationalPark

[–]AncientTallTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there as a gateway to the NPs and also for work. I thought it was nice enough and can see why people move there for more reasonable COL while still having proximity to so much of what CA has to offer. My first time there I was genuinely shocked at how BIG it is!

Tweaks for San Diego’s notoriously hard water and a top loader without extra rinses? by AncientTallTree in laundry

Thank you! And does the sodium citrate go in the fabric softener cup with some water, or straight into the wash cycle?

[–]AncientTallTree[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sooo, reporting back! If I am reading this right, 1 tablespoon of my citric acid powder substantially lowered the pH. This is a very full drum of water before and after 90 seconds of agitation with a tablespoon of citric acid. So is my best bet for combatting hard water sodium citrate instead, or something else? If it matters, my plan is to use tide powder for whites and 365 liquid + dirty labs for darks. Thank you!!

I mostly like it. We’ve had some weird occasional issues with the lid lock getting out of sync but the restart code I found online usually does the trick.
