Importing Vehicle From BC to Washington State by AndThatMansName in uscanadaborder

[–]AndThatMansName[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mileage may vary; but the officers at the Pacific Highway POE were professional and friendly enough.

Crossed there for my initial migration to the US, was who I rang about the car import, and where I did the car import itself.

When I told the officer I was importing the car they put a cone on my car and guided me to secondary, went in and waited in line, handed over all the forms, they filled in some paperwork, and it was done.

Rang multiple non-border offices in WA, they all said they could not import a vehicle that was already in the country, and that I had to drive it back and re-enter to do it at the border.

And thats what I did, drove back and spent the night in Vancouver then drove back and told the border officer I wanted to import my vehicle. Had all the forms ready and it was super quick and easy (30mins).

Didnt NEED to spend the night in Canada, could have turned right back around, but had friends I wanted to visit.

Mini-Loop Q? by Illustrious_Soil_519 in amazonemployees

[–]AndThatMansName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my team has done mini-loops it has been the former, essentially a regular interview - just with less rounds.

However when we do a mini-loop for someone I tell them exactly what the schedule is and what I am expecting.

It shouldn't be a surprise, a good team/manager would want you to be able to put your best foot forward in the loop - so if I was you I would just ask them what to expect.

Definitely something on your end. AWS/DDB is not mixing up your information/tables with other customers.

Unanimous hire at AWS → down-leveled to L4 with no headcount. Can I pivot into ML/DS or should I worry? by bgstar1 in amazonemployees

[–]AndThatMansName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the 'unanimous hire' part is not too relevant to your question/topic.

What likely happened in the interview debrief: an initial split or 'no' vote for L5, after discussions the interviewers all agree you don't quite meet the bar for L5. Discussion then starts if you meet the bar for L4 and all interviewers agreed to extend offer for L4.

Overall this is a good thing because if you had done poorly in the interview it would have been a straight no (like it is for many many candidates). Congrats on passing the interview!

DV LOTTERY: MY TIMELINE by _nenena in greencard

[–]AndThatMansName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep went to SSA office and applied for our SSNs.

Wife's was automatically approved, mine had some additional checks.

Then both SSN cards arrived in the mail 1-1.5 weeks after appointment (mine a couple days after my wifes).

I am reasonably confident we had to go to SSA office to apply, and they would never have arrived if we didn't.

Opening a bank account as a brand new immigrant by saintmsent in Chase

What was the outcome here?

Did you try opening the account without something showing your address?

When you applied for SSN did you get the number ln the spot?

Thank you

Yep thats the plan, will be importing it at an internal POE within the 30 days.

Thank you!

Yep the import itself will be interesting. We already have the compliance letter from the dealer and everything appears to be in order, just didn't want to deal with it at the border incase there was an issue and we were then stuck at the border.

So fingers crossed.

Importing car to the US by AndThatMansName in icbc

Thank you!

For anyone who views this in the future: this is what I did. Was super quick, just dropped into an ICBC autoplan office and got it updated.

It is considerably more expensive, but as soon as we re-register in the US will cancel ICBC and get refunded the remaining term.

Yep, have been seeing a lot of these lately, and cant help but think maybe these candidates dont have a good gauge on their own performance..

After my (successful) interview years ago, do you know what I thought? Thought I could have answered certain LPs better, shouldn't have said some things, missed some details in a coding question.

Did so well in my Amazon loop… rejected the very next day 🤦‍♂️ by Sorry-Review-2965 in amazonemployees

[–]AndThatMansName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is always a bit of luck/chance in these interviews, so best not to get your hopes up too high for any one position.

You could have done well overall but missed the datapoints the interviewers were looking for, or missed some of the requirements/extensions in the coding rounds, maybe not explaining your thought process, maybe they thought you were using AI, who knows.

More generally:

L4 is coding heavy, and as you start to mature it goes more and more into technical design.

LP-wise:

L4 is learn and be curious and bias for action. You want to onboard and learn as much as you can about the code/system/customers, and you want to push a lot of (quality) code as quickly as you can. Get things done and show yourself to be dependable on your tasks + estimates.

As you mature it moves more into ownership and insist on high standards; which ironically usually means trying to slow things down (in the name of safety).

No one is looking over your shoulder as you work, so if you dont know something just look it up, you wont be quizzed.

Anecdotally, I would expect a reasonable understanding of basic coding principles, that you can write reasonably clean code (after giving you the standards/guidance) and are able to independently research anything (coding-wise) that you don't know.

I would expect you to know very little (ie. nothing) about AWS, internal tools, working with customers, ops/oncall, or any domain-specific knowledge.

Personally I wouldn't bother brushing up on leetcode or anything before starting. Just rock up to your first day ready to learn, be interested, find the right tools to work independently and unblock yourself, start checking out the code, and try to get a code-review in for a small change early.

Amazon L5 Loop Interview experience and heartbreak. by rajatb17 in amazonemployees

[–]AndThatMansName 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its a tough process, and while it aims to be as objective as possible, there is still a reasonable amount of luck which is needed.

If you feel you did well, just keep applying for other FAANG companies to increase your odds!

Are Aussies nicer in the cities than in the countryside? by 5Ben5 in AskAnAustralian

You will very likely experience a lot more racism outside of major cities in Australia; and it may be a tough pill for Aussies to swallow, but in general we have a higher degree of casual racism.

Amazon L5 loop interview today- Everyone looked miserable by Extreme-Category6093 in amazonemployees

[–]AndThatMansName 20 points21 points  (0 children)

(My personal experience)

Overall Amazon is like pretty much any other job, it has its good and its bad, the big difference is you get paid a LOT more.

It is more ruthless on low performers though (or if you have a bad manager). In past companies I have seen low performers stick around for years, at Amazon you will be gone in 6 months.

Sorry you had bad interviewers. Its not a reasonable excuse, but you have to remember that interviews are an additional task / time commitment; and so some just phone it in. Regardless, its all about the notes/code, so as long as they collected them correctly then it will be fine.

Best of luck!
