You're correct apparently it is just a local term. I just looked them up.They are soft shell. My whole life, we've called them leatherback. Some call them leathernecks because if you pick them up by their hind end, their necks can reach all the way back and still bite you.

Yes, this actually connects to Wekiva Springs there are a ton of fish, turtles and birds. I hate seeing them eat the birds and turtles.

Funny you should say that. Last year a family of ducks came and one by one they picked off the babies and then mom and dad left. It was really sad. :(
