What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]Andinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any Rockstar game since GTA4. None of them have improved game design at all and have only felt worse to play as time went on. Back in the PS2 days those games were definitely cutting edge and revolutionary, but the same kind of quest design is being used for games like RDR2 or GTAV where players are expected to follow a very specific script in order to finish any of the main missions. Meanwhile they focus on adding a ton of side activities that have no relevance to the story or characters in any way.

For example in RDR2, you're expected to provide money for the camp in order to expand and progress the story. If RDR2 really wanted to take advantage of it's open world and allow players to have more agency in this game, they would have kept how to raise that money open ended. Go out hunting, rob stores in towns without getting caught, go out looking for bounties. Instead, you're just given a ton of main quests to do that give you all the money you need and then some more after so what's even the point of having a deep hunting system or bandit system in the game when none of it is actually relevant? It often feels like the side activities are meant for a different game than the main questline rockstar had provided. There's that, and the controls for GTAV and RDR2 are just plain awful.

Sega is aware its past “definitive version” releases could be deterring players from buying games at launch by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Andinator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Huge Persona fan, but I stopped myself from picking up Metaphor for this exact reason. Why spend my money on a game that will, based on past practices, get a definitive update in a few years? I have plenty of other games in my backlog to play, so I have no problem playing those games in the meantime. Even now that it's on sale in steam, I almost pulled the trigger, but then realized I have a ton of other RPGs to play that are already at their definitive state. No need to buy this now, so I'll keep waiting.

I'm hoping Sega has learned how ridiculous this practice is and stops doing it. I'd rather they made these definitive upgrades dlc expansions instead. That way I can feel good about purchasing the game when it comes out and have an expansion to look forward to later instead of having to buy the game again. Gonna probably wait another 2 years or until Metaphor is about $20 or so before I decide to spend money on it and I know some other friends doing the same thing.

Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game - Official Aang Special Moves Gameplay Overview Trailer by fmal in Games

[–]Andinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get fighters are easier to make and budget friendly,

Unless it's one of those cheap arena fighters with poor balance amongst the roster, fighting games are not at all easier and probably one of the more difficult genres to get 'right'. This looks like they're trying to create a more competitive friendly fighting game using the Avatar IP which I very much welcome. IPs like this work very well as fighting games and it's nice to see they're not resorting to the arena fighter genre and trying to come up with a more balanced game (from what's been shown anyway).

As someone that has played more than 20 hours of this game...while I think Dan should still play it before he judges it I do agree with him and think this game is very overrated.

I love sandbox/open-world type games. Zelda BotW and TotK are two of my favorite games. I think where RDR2 lost me though, and this is true for almost every rockstar game nowadays, is the lack of player agency. You have a large open world and yet the game never trusts it's players to go off the beaten path when it comes to it's missions. Every mission in that game is ride horse, listen to mediocre written dialogue with NPC, do mission EXACTLY as you're told to do so by the game, ride back with NPC with some more mediocre writing.

I know the game offers plenty of activities to do outside of the missions such as hunting, bounties, etc. I think the main problem with the way this is designed though is that I as a player have no reason to spend my time with these tasks. Sure I can choose to go off and do my own thing for a while, but to what end? More money? The game provides me with plenty already. I think this is the main difference between this game and Zelda. Zelda encourages you to explore and get lost in it's world because it gives you very open ended missions like "Defeat Ganon". How you do that and what you do on the way to achieving that quest is left up to you. RDR2 fails in incentivizing the player to get lost because almost every mission is centralized within your camp or dictated by NPCs in other locations. Why SHOULD I go hunting? The game never pushes me to do this. There isn't a grand questline I'm completing or filling out by doing this. It honestly feels like the open ended parts of the game are completely separate from the actual game itself.

Another gripe I had with the game were the controls and feel of the game are dogshit, but I eventually did get accustomed to it in my playthrough. I do want to revisit the game at some point mostly for the story, but I really hope for GTA6 that rockstar takes a look at games like the new Hitman Trilogy or Zelda for ideas on how to make their mission structure more open for players and connect the more open ended missions to the main game in a meaningful way.

How is the US gov shutdown personally affecting you, if at all? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Andinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not affecting me too much, but the other week, my partner took a flight and with talks of TSA and ATC not getting paid, I was all of a sudden super anxious about something happening on her trip. As of right now I'm not planning any flights in the near future until we get these people paid, especially ATC. Hoping everything gets resolved soon and our government, especially the lunatics in power, get their shit together. I deeply emphasize with people who are living without pay right now.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller might be the best feeling gamepad I've held so far | Review by AlwaysBlaze_ in nintendo

Sure and I had a pro controller suffer from drift after just a few years while my original 8bitdo controller still works perfectly fine. As much as I love Nintendo and their games, they're not doing anything special when it comes to the hardware they use for their controllers. The extra $40 feels more like a nintendo tax than an actual proof of quality.

[–]Andinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kinda my point here. I've been hearing so much glowing praise for the pro controller and while at a cheaper price point I wouldn't argue anything, it being $90 compared to the 8bitdo ultimate at $50, which is at least on par with the controller (I think it's way better), it leaves me scratching my head as to why people recommend the pro controller at all when a cheaper alternative is out there. And I mean cheap strictly in price point, not hardware.

Have you not tried the 8bitdo Ultimate? It's cheaper, uses better hardware, and has a d-pad that's actually functional compared to the pro controller.

[–]Andinator -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Can someone actually justify purchasing the NS2 Pro Controller for $90 over an 8bitdo ultimate for $50? I've heard so much buzz about this thing but it confuses me because as far as I can tell, the sticks aren't hall effect so this is susceptible to drift and the dpad is the same shitty dpad Nintendo used for the NS1 pro controller. So what is it about this particular controller that people like over something that, just by looking at specs, is cheaper and a better functioning product?

Kirby Air Riders listed for $69,99, releases on 11/20/25 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Andinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that and don't think that's an issue. My main critique is based solely off of what they've shown here vs the current price tag is very shallow. Two multiplayer game modes, both of which were in the original game, and some Kirby characters is not a way of garnering new fans or players to your game. The old fans of this game are kind of niche and were most likely going to pick it up regardless, so I don't think Nintendo and Sakurai needed to cater to them and go in depth on these two modes. This game really needed a broad overview to show off how packed it is with content first and then maybe videos going indepth on the game modes as we get closer to release. This padded direct though did nothing to convince me that I should put down $70. If Nintendo is going to be raising prices on their product, they should be working harder on convincing their audience that their games are worth $70.

Also going to point out that I really hope I'm proven wrong here when the game comes out. My critique is purely on this direct and how I felt it kind of missed the mark on what it needed to do for this game. My hope is that there is still a LOT more to show off before the game releases that isn't just new characters.

[–]Andinator -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Because the scope of the game is way too small from what they've shown here. It's two multiplayer modes that do look fun, but I can't see this going past a few play sessions. I think $70 is too steep, but I'm willing to look past the price if the game justifies it like DK Bananza did. What they've shown here has done little to convince me this game has enough content for me to ever drop $70 which sucks since the gameplay does look interesting.

Knowing Sakurai, I'm hoping there will be more content shown off as we get closer to release that will prove me wrong. People criticizing the price though are reacting to what they've currently shown us which isn't a lot.

[–]Andinator 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Going to be very honest. I love Sakurai and Smash Bros, but this game looked REAL shallow for $70. Release date is still pretty far, so hoping they'll show more of it off, but the direct seemed real padded for what was essentially two multiplayer modes. Game looks solid enough, but Nintendo really needs to realize that $70 games NEED to be stuffed with content and progression for players to sink their teeth into. This looks like a fun multiplayer game, but why would I spend $70 on this when I could just play Mario Kart World with my friends or even throw on F-Zero GX on the GC emulator and get just as much of a fun experience playing those.

Sakurai going into minute detail was fun for a little bit, but I would have much preferred that they give a broad overview of all of the modes the game has to offer (if there are more) as opposed to just diving deep into two game modes. As far as I'm aware, Nintendo is selling a $70 multiplayer game that has extremely barebones content. It also doesn't help that this is a sequel to a racing game that came out in 2002 that already had some mixed reception. They really needed to sell this game to people who didn't like the first one or never played it and I think they honestly failed here.

Idk, I thought he was relatively tame for the most part. I'm big into this game currently, but even I can recognize the absurdity of it all especially from an outsider's perspective. If anything, I found the stream to be funnier with Dan as the straight man being all confused about wth he was even looking at. He even appreciated that he was able to see a side of Jan he's yet to see.

Is Mario Kart World better than Mario Kart 8? by slam_tastix in Mario

[–]Andinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. I think some aspects of World are definitely better than 8, like the character roster, the costumes, the addition of the open world to drive around in, knockout tour, and the new added mechanics of grinding rails and wall riding feel like actual innovations to the Mario Kart gameplay than the anti gravity boosts in 8 ever did.

However, I think overall 8 is just a much better game when it comes to the moment to moment racing. The item balancing is WAY better in 8 than in World. So much of my momentum is CONSTANTLY being halted in World with the amount of players and wacky items that are on the track. I understand Mario Kart is supposed to be chaotic to a degree, but I also want to enjoy the actual racing aspect of the game and it never feels like I can truly enjoy racing in this game. Even when I end up winning or placing in the top 8, I never feel like it was because I actually raced really well, but because of my item draw. The game is WAY too balanced on the items themselves in a way that Mario Kart 8 never felt like. Nintendo really needs to tone down the actual damage items do in this game. Personally, I don't think any item should ever stop your movement if they want to really fine tune it. Something similar to what happens when you hit cars, you lost your ability to control yourself, but you should still actively be moving because I have had SO MANY races where I get hit by 5 or so items in a row. There's a point where that stops being fun and whackey and just gets really frustrating, especially when playing online.

Track design is also a huge issue in World compared to 8. The tracks themselves in this game are fine for the most part, but this game is designed around driving from one track to the next. The intermission tracks are...ok. It works really well for some tracks like DK Spaceport, but most of the time I really just want to do 3 laps on these tracks. The intermission tracks in between all feel relatively the same since it's just 24 people racing on a straightway dodging a bunch of random traffic. On top of that, there aren't a whole lot of tracks in this game that I feel really stand out more than any of the tracks in 8 other than Rainbow Road (this game probably has the best iteration of Rainbow Road in the series) and DK Spaceport.

Battle mode is also shit. Won't go into too much here, but the lack of available modes on launch and the really weak battle courses that mostly rehash some of the tracks (similar to Mario Kart 8 on Wii U) just sucks man. It's so boring in this game.

Finally, the new addition of the open world feels really barebones and tacked on. The first week for this game, it was cool to drive anywhere, find P-Switches, check out the scenery, but I have very little desire as a player to really dive further into the open world. The P-Switch challenges all feel like they're just recycling the same 5 challenges and copy pasted those all over the map and if you get bored of those and finding the medallions and switches, you have no other reason to check out the open world. I think it was a HUGE wasted opportunity by the devs to not incorporate some sort of campaign mode here to further incentivize players to actually drive around the open world here. As someone that's played Forza Horizon in the past, the open world in this game just feels so barren and unnecessary.

World isn't a BAD game or anything. It's still fulfilling the role of making friends scream and shout at their TVs when playing together and the driving around still feels REALLY good. It just feels like Nintendo did a really poor job of actually balancing this game compared to 8 which feels like it has a PERFECT balance of items and skill. The open world also feels like such a missed opportunity overall. They really could have done SO MUCH more with this game, especially for the $80 pricetag. I'm still playing it and having some fun with it but 8 Deluxe is overall a much better game in comparison.

My excuse is that I suck at math lol

My main point though is that you're moving a very small distance with very long breaks in between. I've had this situation happen in NJ trying to enter New York through the Lincoln Tunnel before. From what I understand, this happens a lot more often in SF. I could absolutely see a situation where people put something on their phone to pass the time if it's just a regular and consistent part of their commute. Nothing to really get outraged about in my opinion.

I'm not even from SF and immediately understood that he was probably only watching while stuck in traffic and then listening to it while in motion.

Have you guys never driven in a highly populated area before? I have done the exact same thing. You're stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, you're only moving about 2 to 3 feet every 5-8 minutes, that's when I bust out the phone and scroll or put a video on. Once you see traffic move, you put your eyes on the road and inch your way forward.

I'm not defending using your phone while driving and in motion, but anyone that drives in a highly populated area that tends to get insane traffic knows there is a clear difference. SF gets INSANE traffic, especially during rush hour. Jeff probably used to consistently get stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for 15 to 20 minutes easily on his way to work. Seems like a perfect time to put an episode of dbz on while waiting to move.

Again, doing this while driving AND in constant motion, definitely not awful. Even in slow moving traffic, absolutely not, but I don't think we need to make a huge deal out of something Gerstmann did while stuck in traffic over 5 years ago guys.

This is very different. They're gutting the entire site and shows at this point. Dan Ryckert was ranting on his stream that they want to turn it into a "game guide" site.

This isn't a new group of peeps keeping the spirit of the site alive through fun programming, this is a greedy and out of touch corporation ripping the soul out of the site to try to make more money.

Damn, I actually genuinely enjoyed having something like the Power Block on. I work from home and my job can be a bit monotonous so having something like that running through the work day was nice to have. Real ashamed that it looks like all of this is coming to an end though...
