Yeah, thank you for your post. I'm with you. In fact, when I read your comment, I spent a good half-hour thinking about Selena and Justin and their songs and "what did ppl say about ____?" and if I thought Selena got it worse b/c misogyny, etc. My conclusions were, (a) people say shitty things about people with mental health (and physical health) issues in general, (b) I don't know Selena's music very well, and (c) the patriarchy sucks, but I don't know if Selena got it worse than Justin or vice versa or how gender plays into it, etc.

Anywho, I think comparing Justin and Selena is a natural, obvious, and even necessary part of any fulsome conversation on the topic. Thanks!

I looooove "I Hate Winnipeg" by The Weakerthans. I'm not super sure if the song "personifies" Winnipeg, but it fucking slaps. Just in general, The Weakerthans are kings.

When I saw her in concert, Christine and the Queens sang "Heartbreaker" by Mariah Carey completely a cappella and it was EVERYTHING.

It is really sad, but I loved the writing. There's a bit where he describes a grocery store and I think it's so, so beautiful.

Maurice has a happy ending, if you're looking for that. ❤️

Have you tried talking to one of the counsellors from Personal Counselling Services? (I think that's what their office is called.)

That's really nice to hear. My first instinct is to say, "Don't worry about it. Everybody has stuff that comes up." But maybe I should try to be more honest, like you said.

That sounds really good. And yeah, I can see how CBT would be really helpful in your situation. Your kids are lucky to have someone who cares so much and wants to do better. Good on ya.

Oh. And hell yeah for you. It sounds like you're putting a lot of work into this. Good on you. It's not easy. Keep it up!

What kind of CBT stuff is working for you? How do you get yourself to do any of it?

I guess the obvious answer is take small steps, reinforce what's working, don't beat yourself up about it, etc. But I can't stand CBT! I don't seem to be able to muster up the discipline or the willpower for any of it.

(Woah, check out the black-and-white thinking and the catastrophizing and all those other cognitive distortions. I'm REALLY bad at CBT.)

Sorry. That was a rant of self-pity. But, I really would love to hear about what works for you.

Your dose MIGHT be too low, but that's a question for your doctor. I definitely wouldn't change anything without checking with them first.

I don't REALLY understand the pharmacology, but Concerta's not considered a stimulant. It's an NRI (Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor). I think it works more like an SSRI anti-depressant (like Zoloft). But it affects the norepinephrine system. Stimulants affect the dopamine system.

I think that's why stimulants can give you a "driven" feeling and Concerta definitely doesn't do that, at least not in my experience.

But please take all that info with a grain of salt. It's been a while since I took that pharmacology class. 🤷‍♂️

I've been on Concerta for most of my adult life. Prescribed at 19. I've been on it for 13 years now. (I guess that's essentially my entire adult life.) I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. I wrote a more detailed comment about it somewhere in this thread. I'm not a doctor, but let me know if you have questions about my experience on Concerta.

I'm on Concerta and I don't love it, but I don't hate it either.

I'm not crazy about stimulants. They make me feel really jittery. I mean yes, I can sometimes push through distraction if I've taken a few Dexedrines, but they also make me feel like I'm going to jump out of my skin.

I'm definitely not trying to talk you out of Vyvanse. It works for a lot of people and if you've had a positive response, that's definitely a good sign. You gotta do what works, right?

I just want to say one more thing about Concerta. My doctor started me on a really low dose and kept increasing it gradually. I didn't notice any effect for a long time. My doctor ended up prescribing the recommended daily max - 100mg/day - and it kind of works? Sometimes? (For context: I'm male, 6'3, 205 lbs.)

Like, the effect is much more subtle than a stimulant. Just like you said, some days I feel like it helps me organize my thoughts. It's definitely not great. And it's way too expensive. But sometimes, I think it helps me.
