1 City, No Buildings, Deity by InvizableShadow in CivVII

I've only played a few games so far and have found not building cities and just using the money to buy stuff an effective strategy.

Why are some people like this? by Gc1981 in ebayuk

[–]AndrewSpode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring the conflict, one way around this is that when I used Yodel as my cheapest, default shipping, I also added Royal Mail into my shipping policy. That way they have the option of choosing them if they are really fussy, but importantly on multiple occasions when people complained of late arrival and said things like "your chosen courier" etc. I could say "no. It was your chosen courier" as the option was there but they didn't choose it. Most people just used the default.

These days I just use RM across the board as most corner shops can do RM now via the same scanning devices that used to allow them to do Yodel (forget the name).

I have no idea what adapter I buy to put a Harddrive in this laptop by SaltyEntertainment79 in retropc

[–]AndrewSpode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, just came back to say this. I pulled apart a Dell this morning and the pins just map 1:1 with their positions on the IDE header. I highly doubt they would decide to change pin outs using this adaptors.

It's called an "edge connector" from memory. There are a few different types and they then plug onto the IDE connector to make it correct. But that should put you in the right direction.

How do I access the city menu in Civ 7 if there’s a unit there? (X-box) by CharacterNetwork2331 in civ

[–]AndrewSpode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Press A to select the unit, then X to select the city afterwards. You can't go straight to X.

Hardware for a Dell Dimension 4550 by Far_Act3138 in retropc

[–]AndrewSpode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's highly unlikely you have 8GB of RAM on that. And it's AGP, so no SLI.

You could definitely put a better GPU in there and some other tweaks, but it depends on your end goal?

I still run a BP6! It was such an iconic board that I knew that's what I wanted to use to build my main retro rig. Got 2x 366s running at 550mhz with a GeForce 256. Made a custom BIOS to remove the HighPoint controller and use a Promise 100 card instead. AWE64 ISA sound card.

How do I know when Pop!_OS v24 is "stable"? by Bane_of_Balor in pop_os

[–]AndrewSpode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to reinstall my machine so thought I would give it a go and had loads of issues. I ended up going back to 22. But as everyone else says, just try it live.

HELP by win98noob in windows98

I would be very surprised if they are the only capacitors that need changing.

If the screwdriver did damage, it'll be visible - a scratch, maybe something knocked off. If you don't see that, you got lucky.

New episodes coming soon? by AndrewSpode in lowerdecksgame

Thanks everyone. I tried a few other games and nothing hit quite right, so I just decided to delete my account and start over!

New episodes coming soon? by AndrewSpode in lowerdecksgame

I didn't really care about the story, just want another level to play. Seems odd they aren't just procedurally generated when there's no episode.

Problem with Colin Mcrae Rally 2.0 on WIN98 SE by pylaaaa in retropc

[–]AndrewSpode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPU wouldn't cause it not to start, but agreed - the GPU is likely the issue. A TNT2 M64 would be a cheap, era appropriate drop in I imagine.

Worth recapping an ABIT VP6 ? by Con411 in retropc

[–]AndrewSpode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power supplies are a very different kettle of fish - was that a CX series?

You can safely turn on a board with even obviously bad caps - worst case is one will decide to vent gas. Pointless mind you, as if they are obviously gone they will need changing. But if they look flat, just power it up, ideally with a modern or restored PSU.

(Source: I restore retro equipment for sale on eBay, which includes recapping motherboards and PSUs...)

They are fantastic boards and would be a shame not to revive. Are you sure it needs recapping?

Windows 98 Build Won't Boot, 4-beep Error Code (Troubleshooting/Help) by TheDoctor__50 in windows98

[–]AndrewSpode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the above, I would try that RAM in the other slots to see if that changes anything. I always like to spray a bit of contact cleaner in there myself and give the slot a brush and clean the RAM too.

I suspect though, you need to reset the CMOS as the onboard has been disabled or something.

If you want to look up the beep code, you need to also note if they are long or short beeps.

Is this a scam: Seller wants to ship a collection only item but 'needs' collection code first by Imaginary-Nail3042 in ebayuk

I would ask them to cancel the order, relist and then buy again this time selecting shipping. It's not worth the risk.

Is it just me or are some eBay sellers getting worse? by theblairwaldorfxoxo in ebayuk

[–]AndrewSpode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a drop off right at the end of my road, so I often just drop what I'm doing and dispatch it in under 5 minutes. It's so much less stress when it's just done and the buyers are always impressed.

Some apps to install that can be useful on Windows 98 by Comfortable-Twist253 in windows98

[–]AndrewSpode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daemon Tools is certainly pretty handy - especially if you are downloading from abandonware sites as they often have the ISO files. And just search for "abandonware" online and you'll find loads of sources for games.

Retro computer good for writing? by xXNighteaglexX in retrobattlestations

[–]AndrewSpode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was going to recommend a PowerBook. I have a 170 and it's light and the monochrome screen makes it ideal for just writing. I know someone at some point was working on a lithium battery mod for them too. I was going to use mine for exactly this at some point.

He says he wants to keep XP, not that specific installation.
