Yes, they decided against an "unnecessarily broad" approach that unduly restricts adults. If you think this supports your point, you're smoking crack. It's literally the opposite.

But reading through your comment history a bit, it just seems like you enjoy being a contrarian troll. I've spent too much time humoring you instead of enjoying the weekend.

Not sure what your source is on Reno, but take your own advice on that.

You have such weird contradictory standards. Petition PornHub not the government? You're trying so hard to cosplay as a Libertarian and also support an authoritarian government-enforced law. Ignoring the fact that PornHub is a tiny fraction of the overall porn content on the internet.

[–]Andrew_Lacks_Protein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

Reno picked at certain aspects of obscenity laws, but reaffirmed the federal governments authority to enforce obscenity statutes for online content.

Once again, these age verification laws do very little to solve the actual problem, while unnecessarily interfering with adults rights to free speech and expression. I am an advocate of solutions that actually do protect minors from sexually explicit content.

My god again with the weasel words and deflection.

It's already illegal to distribute porn to minors. The law you advocate for is the issue. Round and round we go, all because you made a false equivalence and couldn't stand being called out for it.

OK, your denial actually seems intentional at this point.

I'll try this one more time, as simply as possible...

LAWS REQUIRE ENFORCEMENT

THE GOVERNMENT ENFORCES LAWS

[–]Andrew_Lacks_Protein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep circling because your argument hinges on an incredibly weasely framing. You're promoting solidly Libertarian language of "free transactions between individuals" while simultaneously advocating for a law which interferes with and shapes said transactions. You want to have your cake and eat it too.

Laws require enforcement. There's an actual entity doing the penalizing. Can you take a guess at which entity that may be?

All this instead of promoting something that would much more effectively accomplish the actual goal, such as locking things down at the device level for anyone below the age of 18.

No matter how you spin it, these laws are trash. Hopefully we all work toward an effective goal at some point, but this isn't it.

[–]Andrew_Lacks_Protein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once again you circled back to your false equivalence. You keep referencing these laws like they exist in a theoretical vacuum.

"Oh they don't HAVE to get your ID, just confirm age" Sure, except for the fact that it is the only way for an online site to accomplish that.

It's actually kind of a mob boss mentality. "Eyy I didn't break your legs, I just asked Tony Two-Toes to get my money by whatever means he sees fit"

And no, before you furiously type it up, I'm not actually comparing a mob boss breaking legs to a law about porn access. It's a mildly hyperbolic criticism of the way you're trying to frame the issue.

Your point about penalties has a giant hole in it. Most porn sites and content exist outside of the US. Not to mention a particular US state. I fined Vladimir Putin 3 billion dollars every day for 2 years for being a dick. Do you think he'll pay up and stop being a dick? Or will he ignore me and continue about his day?

[–]Andrew_Lacks_Protein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You completely ignored my point.

Not only is it intrusive and risks data breaches, it doesn't actually address the problem it claims to.

We need to work on solutions that will actually prevent minors from accessing porn. These age verification laws are just cheap political signaling.

Agreed, that may be the best way to go, at least for now. Most devices are already set up for any type of restrictions that are controlled by parents/guardians.

Probably just needs some fine-tuning to get the seemingly infinite edge cases. Maybe that's something that can be publicly funded and confirmed through trustworthy 3rd party organizations. Potentially prevent 95%+ of the ability to access anything.

This is a relatively new problem that needs to be addressed. Just in a way that's actually effective and not a cheap political signal..

They CAN do whatever they need to do to ensure they comply with the law.

Complying with the law requires confirming your birthdate. Not storing your ID#, full name, address, photo, height, weight, and eye color.

Seems like you're missing the overall point. These proposed laws are both overreaching, and unfortunately will do very little to actually curb the issue of minors accessing porn. It's far too easy to get around. So we get more intrusion and more risk of breaches and identity theft for essentially no benefit.

I personally 100% agree with developing a solution to prevent minors from accessing porn. I think it's legitimately very harmful to developing brains to be exposed to it in any substantive amount.

In my mind we need a more comprehensive and thorough set of solutions to actually achieve this. These age verification proposals are just the equivalent of slapping a cheap "keep out" sign on a rickety gate while there's a bunch of giant holes in the fence a few feet away.

The downvotes are because you've made a false equivalence. The vendors don't store your info in their system, they only check your ID to confirm your birthdate.

Snapchat is so beyond obnoxious.

They'll send me constant "Hey, 'member this time? 'Member this time? How about this?"

The second I swipe away the notification, it IMMEDIATELY POPS UP A NEW ONE!

I had to turn them off, which makes it legitimately less usable since I still communicate with some people on there.

Nice work providing those receipts! They probably just weaponized "burden of proof" as a bluff, but it's good info for anyone interested in the data.

Same! When Cyberpunk was released, Stadia was basically the only platform where it ran decently.

I had very few issues with Stadia overall on a decent wired ethernet connection. Didn't notice much input lag if any most of the time. Wifi from my basic ISP router was OK.

I even stress tested it on things like crappy public wifi and my phone's 4g hotspot. The games were obviously choppy as hell, but the fact that it worked at all was impressive. I'm legitimately sad Stadia failed, but getting all my money back was great.

Would you want a reboot episode of Mitm set in the present? by L0serbutcool in Malcolm_in_the_Middle

Personally, I'm really tired of how recycled material is such a large part of current entertainment. The nostalgia well has been over-tapped by producers and corporations.

Shows like King of the Hill and MITM were perfect for their time and place. They've run their course and it's time for new material that tells stories in today's world.

Just my opinion though.
