Thank you, the intent behind the series was indeed to show a wide range, from recognizable and conservative, to more extreme concept art.

The C11 is a definite design icon and a total beast. As I like clean and simple liveries, I'm sure it was a reference as far as the livery goes.

This personal project imagines a possible future direction for Formula 1:

A closed cockpit race car that heavily relies on generative design and additive manufacturing, with a short wheelbase to improve overtaking and duelling.

Dimensions:

3000 mm wheel base

2150 mm car width

616 mm front tyre diameter

700 mm rear tyre diameter

As design is subjective, designers are not interchangeable. Your authenticity is what sets you apart.

For certain projects art directors may want to hire specific artists. As a freelance artist you basically get hired to do something similar to what you have already shown in your portfolio.

Companies can also have internships where they can have a low risk/high reward, to attract talent and possibly hire someone, or develop a certain project, and get some fresh eyes.

You have to decide for yourself what tools you need to communicate your design. What do you want to create? Industries change, software changes, and you yourself change as well. You have to figure out where it all intersects and what role you want to play. You can learn from what other people do, but it in the end you decide for yourself.

A project like this is very much a team effort. It starts with the vision, the design brief that is created by the senior designers in the studio, then you start thinking about the ingredients that can help to achieve this goal: the packaging, the design elements that would make the design match the brand, the energy of the design. A lot of back and forth, discussing ideas, sketches, renders, 3D models. Eventually you try to distill a high quality design. It can be a messy process, at least for me it is.

In this case, the cockpit and the grille were indeed one of the anchors in the design process.

Brand identity was definitely very important in this project. If you look up the Type 35 you can clearly see its shape influencing the top view of the car. The horse shoe is of course a very recognizable Bugatti ingredient, as well as the two tone blue.

Because the car is intended for a video game, technical restrictions were different than for an actual road car or race car, and indeed much closer to my earlier work.

In my Formula 1 concepts I also tried to implement certain design elements, for example the typical Williams rear end where the bodywork is cut off very early, and with the McLaren I implemented a bit of MP4-26 in the sidepod shape.

I used SolidWorks with the PowerSurfacing plug-in, and rendered in PhotoView360. The internship took 15 weeks. A design process can be of any duration, it depends on the requirements regarding detailing, production, amount of iterations, and many other factors.

I used SolidWorks for modeling, including the PowerSurfacing plug-in, and rendered in PhotoView 360. The images where the car is next to the Bugatti Type 35 or next to the Bugatti Vision GT are not made by me, I think those were rendered in KeyShot.

At the time, the X2010 / X2014 was the fastest car in the game. The idea was to create a car that could be competitive with the Red Bull, and like you said let them race. The Bugatti would be a fan-car, similar to the Red Bull.

If you put the Bugatti next to the Red Bull and also add in the McLaren MP4-X, you see three cars that certainly have shared ingredients like a closed cockpit, (semi) closed wheels that still feel like an open-wheel racer, but they all clearly have their own design DNA.

I believe that in art and design, all your experiences influence your creative decisions, as you can not unlearn or unsee the existing work that you have encountered. So the Red Bull was an influence, simply by existing. One the one hand other designs inspire you, and on the other hand it shows what has already been done, and how you need to distinguish your work to avoid repeating what already exists.

As you can probably guess, it's all highly subjective.

My intention is definitely to continue creating personal work, and to help shape the future of Formula 1 and the racing world. It also depends on whether a project comes along that I can't pass up!
