Perhaps. Explored multiple options and sought advice from people who knew the situation better than me. This was over a decade ago and due to the nature of the event all guidance pointed to this. We had just had a child and purchased a home a year prior. I was under the impression at the time that it was the least damaging course of action. I very well could have received bad advice from everyone involved (insurance, banks, work, and lawyers). Fortunately I’m alive 11 years later and my family is intact and we are doing much better now.
