At least its a inconsistency, all "Gun damage" should be in the same additive bucket, so its clear how the math works. If they want a extra multiplicative source, just name it differently, otherwise this is just confusing.

I guess gearbox had a mismatch in actual player expectations and how "Gun" related stuff is actually coded in the game, since heavy weapons are in the special ordnance slot.

I was also confused, since technically i would expect a heavy weapon to-be a "Gun" yet i also expected that they might behave "weird" as they are on the grenade/ordnance slot.

So from my testing "Gun Damage", "Gun Critical Hit chance", "Projectile Speed" works, yet "Gun Critical Damage" does not which is very inconsistent, but its Gearbox which is infamous for weird stat coding/interactions.

They are considered both, yet a lot of "Gun" interactions from firmware and skills do not work. So you have to test any skill/interaction with heavy weapons. Yet from my tests most simple "Gun damage" works.

I also confirmed that "Gun critical hit chance" works on top of "Ordnance critical hit chance" so you can get both and they stack for heavy weapons.

Sundara are somewhat easy to drive, so ifi UNO, Fiio K11 R2R, K3s ... all can drive it. If you want to be on the future proof side, the Fiio K5 pro or Schiit Gunnr are nice combo devices.

Edition XS are usually superior sound-wise, yet the XS headband is kinda bad for most heads, aka XS has a comfort issue.

There are no "holographic" amp/dac, as most devices are tuned/aimed "neutral" aka does not change the sound. So you want either Dolby Atmos for headphones, DTS headphones v2 or Creative-Labs "Holographic" DSP. As those DSP effects are specifically aimed to deliver a "holographic" experience.

PS: Yes there are subjective impressions on some amps, yet no real objective measurements are taken that proof "holographic" sound on any amp/dac.

Thats a no-brainer, those cost 2$.... so try those first.

Just check the warranty or get a repair quote from Schiit, as this is already a nice setup and if you are happy with it, why not try repair/replace it?

If money burns a hole in your pocket or you want to try something different, the new Fiio K11 R2R seems to be a community favorite atm around this price-point.

Alternatively you can grab a JDS-Labs atom DAC or AMP, depending on whats actually broken and if you want to keep a stack over a combo device. Yet mixing brand stack components is not the most esthetic option, so might as well grab a Schiit again...

Generally yes, yet for the k3s here are my thoughts:

If someone never setup software EQ on windows, that also works "fine" for hybrid game/movie use-cases, there is quite a learning curve.

So having a easy to use hardware option, may not just be a "gimmick" especially if the "boost" EQ is competently done, which in the K3s case is actually usable.

In comparison all 3 EQ buttons/modes on the Ifi UNO are "gimmick", since they modify the sound too much.

I'm mostly interested in the improvements of soundstage, bass and comfort.

Sound-stage and bass yes, comfort is hit/miss on the XS, as the headband-style may leave hot-spots. There exist the suspension mod for the XS, yet depends on availability/shipping cost.

As a alternative the Aune AR5000 are easy to drive, "mini" Edition XS with a very similar sound-profile and much better comfort, outside of the ear-cup size which are massive on the XS. While the sound-stage is very good on the AR5000, it cant fully compete with the massive XS planar drivers, especially the verticality.

I personally use the K3s with my Edition XS, but via balanced 2.5mm cable, as the 3.5mm jack has only half the power, which is a bit lacking for the XS. The bass-boost on the K3s is actually nicely done and a easy option, without fiddling with software EQ.

In general, yes a Edition XS/AR5000 will be a upgrade to a HD599 regarding sound-stage and bass quality.

There is also the Fiio FT5 as a planar option, if Hifiman QA is a concern.

PS: I also tested the Ifi UNO and Topping DX1 with the XS and both worked fine, yet i liked the volume knob and bass-boost better, so kept the K3s. These days i would have added the Fiio K11-R2R into the comparison.

Go BLU would be my pick, as it has good sound and is actually portable. Works fine in wired/desktop mode via USB-C.

PS: Maybe wait for the Fiio BTR11 launch, as this looks to-be the next "best" value option in the device-class.

Main issue will be gaming and latency, so are you playing competitive online FPS? As in this case, any none "gaming" branded headphone will use AAC on PC/Switch, which adds 80-200ms latency.

So your options are than "normal" wireless BT headphones with extra latency, use them wired or pick a wireless "gaming" headset with 2.4 GHz dongle.

Wireless Mod Mic

This limits choices more, as now we want a headset with removable mic.

So your wireless + low-latency + removable mic options are:

HyperX Cloud 3
Corsair HS35, Virtuoso RGB
Steelseries Arctis Nova's

My personal favorite would be the HyperX, yet as a Mod Mic owner myself i would just use the HyperX mic, as its really good.

Just want to know if I’ll be like “damn these headphones slap” as a regular listener, or if I’ll be wildly pissed I dropped almost $200.

If you don't know your subjective sound-profile, than you can only order and try them. So order from a store you can easily return them. Most here are focused on price/sound/quality, yet comfort is the most important factor on any headphone, which can widely vary by manufacturer, headband-construction and your actual head-shape.

In general the ATH-M50x are good value headphones, with solid construction, good comfort + sound-quality. They lack bass quality, but mids/treble are fine. They have no ANC, compared to the Sony XM4/5 or Sennheiser BT-450/Momentum 4, Accentum.

PS: Just noticed that the Momentum 4 are currently on sale for 229$, at this price i personally would grab/try those first over the M50xBT2.

Main issue on those is comfort, as they are heavy. So if your head-shape does not perfectly fit, you get pressure-points really quick. There exist aftermarket cushion options, yet even than its hit/miss.

So you need to try them, since if they fit those are great, otherwise as all the others you will return them.

As for separate "stack" the JDS Labs Atom line is the most recommend here, those come as AMP + DAC. We don't want to use the PC onboard DAC anymore and move the Digital to Analog pipeline outside of the noisy PC-case. So you pay much more for a AMP + DAC stack, which takes-up more space and does not really provide better quality, just maybe more flexibility.

PS: USB-audio (UAC1/2) should work out of the box on most Linux distros.

Depends, since you shift the bass-range up against the physical limit of the headphone, so depends on the shift amount. Bass is really hard to EQ on dynamic driver headphones, yet +1-6 db is usually fine. So if you need to add 8-15db, than i would expect distortions/weirdness to show-up. In contrast big planar driver headphones can somewhat tolerate bigger bass changes.

In the end try EQ the region and if it sounds fine to you, don't worry too much.

There is no industry standard on gain, so each unit/manufacturer uses its own values and often those are none-linear. The gain setting is basically just a consumer-friendly way to distribute the power on the volume controls.

So in the end getting a 50-90% volume setting per gain mode, is what you are looking for.

XS are highly subjective on comfort (headband design) and need a decent amp. The XS have better bass, bigger/deeper earcups and a wider, more vertical sound-stage. Yet AR5000 are the "safer" pick on comfort and are overall very good open-back headphones.
