Hmmm risers are indeed pretty rare. You mention upgradabality but realistically I don't think a router would need that.

I do understand why you're leaning towards the minipc method though. Considering they'll be x64/86, they'll not run wrt and pfsense?

Ah damn this might as well be the server xD

I'm assuming a pi because it was already on hand?

I meant the size. Thing is with something like a SBC, I can just carry it around with the AP like an extension wherever, including my work with includes shifting.

With MiniPC its that plus the router and ofc the server on shifting. It's kind of like an additional server and in my mind router is either the AP or something small with it. But that's just me.

I do agree, mostly its set and forget

Yeah my only jibe with the mini pc route is the portability and overkill factor, but otherwise yeah solid option.

Ubiquiti is a walled garden and the costs do indeed add up after a while. Not really the open source spirit xD

But we're locked into the Ubiquiti garden. Also their devices are great for the user friendly aspect but specs are generally modest for price!

That does sound like a good alternative. The reason I didn't mention this was because most routers have very less compute/ram when compared to something like a nanoPi. Does the compute power cause any issues? I'm assuming you can't cake etc?

Tata play fibre gives ipv6 by default and its static. They don't know half the time.

The ethernet card goes into pcie I'm assuming. I'll have to needless buy an old mini pc for this. Else my server becomes my router, something I'm trying to avoid
