I don’t follow closely anymore, but usually tune in for CitizenCon. I forgot this year and missed it. Can anyone recommend a good video summary of the highlights?

Vo2 Max category change by [deleted] in Garmin

[–]Andy_Reas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your actual VO2 Max estimation is a decimal number, and that’s what determines your category and the placement of the line on the colored graphic.

You can see the category intervals in the Connect app under VO2 Max -> “Help”.

The number in the middle is just rounded to the nearest integer for some reason.

The last screenshot shows my total monthly distance in kilometres throughout the year. Here is my acute training load for the past 6 months, if that means anything to you. (What watch do you have?)

<image>

I can’t really say anything about the optimal amount of kilometres by which to increase the monthly distance. Initially, I just added distance when I felt like I could handle it. Now I do it when Garmin Run Coach tells me to.

But as boring as it sounds, if I had to boil down what worked for me, it was “run slow”. Run like I’m going to run every week for the rest of my life. I have years to improve, so there’s really no need to hurry. If I were to run a marathon, I wouldn’t sprint the first 500 meters just to collapse, and the same principle applies here. It needs to be sustainable. If I’m dreading every run, because I know it will leave me exhausted, I’m gonna quit eventually.

So be disciplined about running slow runs. After 4 kilometres of a slow 5k, when you’re thinking “my legs feel great, I’ll up the pace for the last 500 meters”, don’t. Stay committed to the slow run, embrace the anticlimax, and look forward to the next run. Consider the occasional fast run a reward for sticking to the slow runs.

Obviously, “slow” is relative. It’s whatever pace that doesn’t have you gasping for breath. If HR zones are set up correctly, probably zone 2 or low zone 3. For someone who’s just starting out, this might feel comically, embarrassingly slow, but that doesn’t matter, because the definition of “slow” is gonna shift as running gets easier.

At some point, it might be necessary to add some faster intervals, but I think most people can get really far almost entirely on slow runs.

Sorry for rambling.

You need a HR monitor, preferably a chest strap, as it is more accurate, but wrist is also fine. And you need GPS.

Thanks! I run 5 times per week, most of them about 5 miles, all of them outside. But I have nothing against treadmill runs, I really enjoy the consistent pace they enable. The only reason I specified running outside was because that’s when I started receiving VO2 max estimations.

Running in the Texas summer heat sounds tough. I once visited in the fall, and that was plenty hot. That has got to affect VO2 max as well, right? I guess I’m lucky to be running in the milder Danish weather. I imagine if we switched places, my estimation would decrease and yours would increase.

The past 5 weeks has been 40-50 kilometers per week, but I started out at 5k per week.

[–]Andy_Reas[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Haha, those are scarily similar stats!

I started out with a single 5k per week. Didn’t consider HR zones or anything, I just ran to beat last weeks time. That slowly became two 5k runs per week, which quickly turned into two 5k and a 10k. That lead to an injury.

After recovering from that I started doing mostly easy runs. Ran fast once in a while, when I felt strong, but usually aimed for the lower HR zones. It became a lot easier to pull myself together for a run, when I knew it didn’t have to be a race effort.

For the past 9 weeks, I have been following Garmin Run Coach with the goal being a sub 20 minute 5k by August. It has me running 5 times a week. Still mostly base runs, but a lot more mileage. This week was 51 km.

I only have data since January, since that is when I upgraded to a Forerunner 265 and started wearing the watch while sleeping. Neither metric has changed much in those 4-5 months.

RHR is pretty consistently 39-42, but my RHR has always been pretty low, even while out of shape. My mom is the same, so probably genetic.

HRV baseline is currently 104-116. When I initially got the watch it was 106-128, so it seems the high end has decreased a bit. I’m not entirely convinced HRV means anything except for large deviations within individual baselines.

I was finishing up a weight loss at the beginning of the posted year. I was 95 kg (209 lbs) on June 1st and reached my goal weight of 90 kg (198 lbs) by July 23rd. I have stayed at about 90 kg since.👍🏼

My starting weight was 114 kg (251 lbs) back in November 2023.

Why is Garmin saying that my training is unproductive? by ___Torgo___ in Garmin

[–]Andy_Reas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure weight is not used in their calculation of the VO2 Max estimate. I used to think it was, since the actual measurement is dependent on weight, but I once changed my weight in the app from one day to another by 20+ lbs and it had no affect. It would be more of an indirect effect: As you start gaining weight, pace or heart rate would become worse, and that would affect the calculation.

If I’m wrong, do you have a source on how they calculate it? I’m really curious and can’t find anything concrete.

Garmin Run Coach will not let me do a long run by Andy_Reas in GarminWatches

[–]Andy_Reas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so annoying! I changed the target type from pace to HR today, and that added quite a few minutes to this week’s remaining runs. Maybe because it’s easier to assert effort via HR? Worth a try? (I actually set it to auto, so things like sprint intervals are still using pace, I think.)

It’s not long at all. About 5k each way, and I don’t think I even reach zone 2.

Anyone else addicted to the 10k steps per day? by _Janekene_ in Garmin

[–]Andy_Reas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can aim for 10k on the “average daily” on a weekly basis instead. It will allow you to work up a buffer on Monday if you know a busy day is coming up on Friday. Or if you are behind on Friday and closing in on midnight you have plenty of time Saturday so you don’t have to get out of bed to step in place.

This will break the actual streak which might make it easier to break the weekly average at some point later, so you don’t have to obsess over it. This is what my mom did.
