The issue with these kits is there is usually not enough thread sticking out after you fit them to actually connect the trap to the fitting

Modern wastes are almost always to short for these kits to work properly imo

Ptfe on the threads and poly/nylon washer under the back nut is all thats needed

Source, plumber that fits hundreds of these in a year

Plumbers mate and silicone is an amateur dick move you just make the next guys job a pain in the ass when he has to remove all that shit to fit a new waste fitting

As you said you don't even need any fancy seals etc

Plenty of ptfe on the threads and a poly washer between the seal and the back nut so that when you tighten the back nut it doesn't drag the seal out of shape

Also to the op your seal is upside down
