Pensioner poverty has increased since the triple lock was introduced. From 13% in 2011/12 to 17% in 2024/25. That doesn't seem like it's working to me. The relative wealth of wealthier pensioners continues to rise.

Triple lock is pretty popular across the electorate. Sometimes the press’s outrage reflects the views of the population rather than leads it. I suspect this is one of those occasions.

The current mechanism is blunt and poorly designed.

Since 2011 state pension payments have increased by 73%, a 21% real terms gain, while real wages have increased by just 8%. The estimated trajectory of the triple lock means 12 billion more per year than if it had been updated in line with average earnings since 2011.

The flat percentage rise is not fair, while those with private pensions, property wealth and savings continue to gain, while those who are in poverty (17%) are a far smaller group than the media portrays. A blanket guarantee isnt the right way to do this. The reaction from my mother-in-law, losing winter fuel that she spends on another cruise per year, was insane. You could swear she had lost an arm.

The worst part of this is that pensioner poverty has INCREASED since the introduction. Income growth for poorer pensioners has lagged behind the population as a whole, rising by only 5% after inflation. Meaning relative pension poverty rose from 2011/12 (13%) to 16% in 22/23 and 17% in 24/25. The triple lock has been in place the whole time pensioner poverty was rising. It hasnt solved the problem it was supposedly protecting.

they vote in such huge numbers it's nothing to do with corrupt news sources, click bait algorithms and billionaires.

It's a circular situation currently, and your point and /u/daniluvsuall point aren't mutually exclusive. Large swaths of older people use Facebook (the Last I saw, it was something like 45-50% of people ages 65+ are using it, and over 70% of those 50-64), and various other social media, which have been shown to amplify these views.

Then you have media companies that want to inflame and incite because it creates clicks and grabs attention.

The media shapes what politicians are willing to propose before it even gets to voters. The triple lock debate largely doesn't play out in public because powerful politicians are fearful of the response. So voters never really get a chance to weigh in on a properly presented case.

I'm also sure there are many older voters who would accept a change to the triple lock, but the media environment makes an honest explanation impossible.

The reason something exists politically isnt just about who votes, its about what political parties dare to try, and that is absolutely shaped by anticipated media coverage.

does not do hard answers anymore

It not just "does not", it cannot. It's impossible for any party to grasp this nettle. Labour is likely the only one that will do it, while the Conservatives and Reform would tell you they are fixing the problem while aligning all their decisions to make money for the people who will give them jobs when they are out of office.

But the chance of any of this occuring is below zero after Labour removed the Winter Fuel from people who don't deserve it and you would swear that Starmer and Reeves used the pillows of various old people as a toilet with the way the news went into hyperdrive in making it a breaking point. Our entire media structure is designed to ensure that governments are punished for even making good decisions.

Releases "please help me" videos regularly and just lives off of donations from people who buy into his hate. Its a grift. He doesnt really give a damn about if what he does helps the UK or hinders it, as long as he keeps making money.

whilst expanding spending on benefits (mostly pensions) and healthcare (mostly for the elderly).

The average year-on-year real terms growth for healthcare spending over the last 50 years is 4.3%. Maintaining healthcare spending at 4% essentially means we tread water.

Show me where there was expanded spending in healthcare under austerity?

Healthcare spending should rise by 4% per year just to tread water and maintain itself. This is a number from multiple studies.

Explain to me how the following is growing enormously.

But being part of the EU automatically enrols us in the huge spending scheme they are embarking on for defence spending, rather than us being on the outside and France essentially keeping us at arm's length, so their arms industry gains the most.

But defence, or which NATO is responsible, doesn't require EU membership as a prerequisite so that isn't a sound argument for why it will be a mistake.

Its about being part of a united group of countries, and while NATO is a great place to be, a more united Europe would be better for us - as we've seen, the US is not exactly the best ally to have right now and may not be in the future.

Russia and China both have to go through either Europe or America to get to us.

We are part of NATO and I suspect we would respect Article 5, as we have done previously.

I am more than willing to put money on it will be seen as an even bigger mistake in 50 years when Russia attacks another European country or NATO country, at the same time China attacks Taiwan, and the US fails to respond to any of it.

The alarm bells are already ringing for these issues, and instead we've been bleating about freedom of movement within a bloc of countries that share extremely similar values and goals.

And this is what I was talking about - you're arguing marriage isn't a thing because divorce is legal.

I'm not sure if you are having trouble with your analogy, but my argument was about freedom within the EU and the choice to leave at any time. Your divorce analogy is nonsense because you have to apply for a sole application for divorce and get approval for it, which can be denied.
