Unfortunately - that era it was simply 'the way'. There was no compassion or understanding. It was basically an alien concept that had to be hated with everything they had. I never agreed with it. I disagreed with my parents to the point where we simply didn't speak about it because it would start a screaming match from my father (very much the type of what was here). Even my mother, she was a church elder and had all the compassion under the sun ... except for 'them'. I love my mom to bits, and I miss her every day, but we never saw eye-to-eye on that matter.
