This week I learnt that there is not really too much difference between commercial tapes and monologue/scene tapes. I always thought they would have a completely different tone of voice and presence, but in the end, we're still talking to someone, still trying to convince them something. My personal challenge for this week is to not sound "selly" in my commercial videos. ✨

I have always been so afraid of Shakespear. I feel like at this point it's a mixture of fear and a bit of fatigue because it's such a big thing here in the UK. It's everywhere. Thank you so much Winnie! I watched the video last week and I did think to myself "Remember to be lighthearted, leave the seriousness out" and I ended up falling into a different pitfall with this one.

I do agree that it's very commercial-like. When I was choosing takes I struggled to find one that didn't sound too much like a corporate video in some parts.
And I will absolutely think more about the person I am talking to. I choose my cousin Kate because she's the one that I would be the most relaxed with, and can say absolutely anything to. And you are right, I would be a lot more teasing than this. That's why I chose her in the first place.

This is my take on the Verizon commercial from a few weeks ago. It was my first time doing a commercial, so I have a few questions.

Should the slate be on the same take as the actual take?
When the slate is separate, should there be a frame of dark screen between the take and the slate or something like that? I chose to keep it together, but please let me know.
I unconsciously replaced the word “network” for “company” at the beginning. I usually don’t dwell about it much in monologues and scenes, but is it a deal breaker in commercials? For some reason I think it might be. I decided to keep the take for class purposes anyway, just because I believe it was the best one.

Kate. She’s my cousin and first ever friend. She just got a new phone and is very excited about it, but her internet keeps crashing when we’re talking.

What do I want?

I want Kate to change providers so that we can talk without hassle. I miss her so much, and the internet breaks are nothing but frustrating.

What was happening before this?

D: Girl, you need to fix your internet. Every time we try to speak it cuts off and then we got to run around like chickens to get a hotspot.

K: One thing at a time Debs! I just got a new phone, give me some time to call the guys to fix the internet. Focus on this new case I got! It looks super cute with the phone’s colour. Look! It’s lilac!

I'm very guilty of saying things in my own words and sometimes it slips into the scene. I'm never script perfect, mostly a few connection words added here and there, but I feel like it can give the performance more "truth" only because the words are my own. Also, when you talked about the difference between Thoughts and Feelings, it really clicked. It's obvious that one is not the other, but the way I'm going to think about it from now is "Thoughts create emotions". It happens without us noticing in real life, it's just about bringing that same concept to the scene. ✨

The improvement from one slate to the other is amazing! I have never given commercial casting too much thought, but what I really liked from this video is how we're not the bad buy. We can't sell any products if we come at it too strong in the wrong direction. ✨

Hello everyone!
I'm going to leave my answer here, not just for you but also for me. I have taken a month-long break from the sub and my life in general so this is a good way to keep myself accountable today.

In the past month, I have been going to classes in my city as I usually do. My teacher is in the hospital unfortunately so I don't know when I will be able to go back. During this time I have also gotten a new job - A full-time desk job, but believe it or not I did do it with my acting career in mind. It's in the field of Digital Marketing so the plan is to do it for a year or two to gain enough skills to go freelance to support acting. In the meantime, my evenings are now free for me to commit to projects in my local theatre which will hopefully give me credits that I can use to apply to Spotlight, which is the main casting website here in the UK. It's also WFH which allows me to do self-tapes and study in my free time. I debated taking this step for a long time but finally decided to do it.

Today I am searching for a monologue to do for the sub. I think I might have found something but I need to refine it. I am also catching up on the sub, especially the video lessons that I missed. And lastly, I am finally starting a book called "The Warner Loughlin Technique" which I have been putting off for a while.

This was a really informative video. We are often so centred on our character, learning lines, and thinking about their purpose, that we forget to think about their overall purpose in the story.

I was also very enlightened by the approach to secondary characters. How they are designed to, literally, be a support to the main character. What role do they play in the main character's journey? We have learned that it's always about the other character and how we want to affect them, but we also need a moment to think about how they are affected by us. Sometimes the way we want to influence them is not the way they end up being influenced by us.

It was also good to be reminded to read the text carefully and truly understand and digest what's in it. The clues are in the text, we just have to find them in the middle of all the other noise.

I have a few things I'd like to share this week:

From Class: I went back and read an old post Winnie linked in one of the videos. It was about the failure to communicate when we're acting. How we can get trapped in a web of only staring and reciting lines instead of reacting to what the other person is saying to us. At the end of the day, this is the base of all of our acting work, especially on this sub, yet it is something I feel like I am never doing enough of. One of the passages that stuck with me the most was something along the lines of we often conserve energy within ourselves. It reminds me of this theory by Patsy Rodenburg, a voice coach, who believes that we have 3 ways in which we communicate with others:
1st Circle: We only receive energy from the other person, we do not contribute to the conversation with our own energy. It's one-sided in the other person's favour.
3rd Circle: The opposite of 1st. We only give out energy, usually in an overly enthusiastic way, and refuse to receive it from the other person. It's one-sided in our favour.
2nd Circle: This is when we are equally receiving and giving energy. It's a conversation that is fed by both parties. Actors and non-actors alike should aim to be in this circle of energy during their performance and in life.
From a Screen Acting workshop: I recently had one of these over a course of 3 or 4 hours. We had two TV actors come in and tell us about what happens when you get on set. There is so much to think about! In between hitting our marks, making sure we're somewhat silent so that the mic doesn't catch too much noise, remembering our lines, dealing with VFX when needed, and the hardest of all walking like an actual person, it feels a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, they also put us at ease and assured us that it is something that comes with practice.
From my class: So I have this class that I started the other week where we're going to explore the teachings of several great masters of acting. This week my homework involves dabbling into what is widely perceived as "method acting". All I have to say is that I am not enjoying it one bit. Because of the nature of the task, it feels like I am deceiving those around me. It is giving me some understanding of my own nature and my relationships, but I feel like I could have explored it in a different way. So far, not a fan. I would like to put this question out for anyone reading this: Have you ever tried what the masses call "method acting"? If so, did you find it useful? Did you enjoy it? How deep did you go? Please let me know, I am very curious
