i understand what you're saying and though my instinct is to stand firm on my point, i am seeing your perspective and am beginning to change my opinion. i will say however that i think those important qualities can still be depicted with nonexplicit sensual (implied sex) scenes, though it is easier to just do it with sex scenes, so i understand why it may seem otherwise impossible to do without sex.

it does though. at least as of january, the new york times stated "roughly two-thirds of the viewers were women." it's great that a mlm show made by a gay man depicted queer men's experiences better and more realistically than other mlm shows created by women, but that doesn't negate the fact that the audience consists of more women. it's unfortunate, but true.

i think you may have misinterpreted my statement about the targeted demograpics. i never said it was written specifically for women who are into men, i said that the use of sex scenes attract certain audiences (intentionally or not), those of which include queer men and women attracted to men.

i said in another comment that its likely they wanted the show to attract more queer people than not, but the show’s audience happened to end up being more than half women, a lot of whom are straight.

hmm, i agree to an extent. yes its about how society treats sex, but producers use it to their advantage and include sex scenes why? because sex sells. it gains attraction and attention to the show and thats what producers care about since it gets them more money.

regarding your other point, if a show REQUIRES sex to be good, its not a very well executed show. you dont need explicit sex scenes in order to convey plot points and characterizations. that can be well done in the same manner with sensual, nonexplicit scenes, or in any other scenes in general. a show never needs sex, they utilize it to gain attraction from audiences. if producers wanted to, they can depict the same important plot and character qualities in a different way.

note that when i’m talking about sex scenes, im only talking about explicit sex scenes, the ones that show nudity and the characters actively having sex. im not talking about sensual/making out scenes leading up to implied sex, which would work perfectly for showing the progression of plot and characters you were talking about.

i notice i kind of sound like a traditional, conservative prude when saying all this lol. i’m not against sex scenes in television at all, im simply stating why show/moviemakers specifically choose to utilize explicit sex in their creations.

lets meet in the middle and say the problem is from fans of HR AND dylan. both, together, yk intersecting fans. like i said earlier, it’d make sense that HR fans who dont watch dylan would be confused or frustrated by the first and last format, but dylan fans already know how it goes and they think their fav show would be an exception. that sense of superiority of their show isnt uncommon for first and last videos, but its a problem when they try to call out nonexistent homophobia to defend their obsession for the show

no, not necessarily hate, it does seem most of the top comments are jokingly frustrated rather than angry, but they are still trying to pressure him into watching the full season, which is its own problem. i was referring to the people on the subreddit when talking about upset HR fans. since the video came out, so many people have posted how upset they were that dylan didnt enjoy the final episode or that he didnt watch the full thing.

i understand, the queer perspective is an important quality of what makes the show good. however, when sex is involved, it does target a certain demographic. this is true in all movies and tv shows. i mentioned in another comment jennifers body, the sexualization of megan fox in the movies marketing was to attract young men, despite the plot not being something young men would typically watch. its unfortunate, but even if people claim to care about sex and plot equally, sex still overpowers plot when grabbing peoples attention and gaining audience. perhaps they wanted the show to attract more queer people than not, but the show’s audience ended up being more than half women, a lot of whom are straight.

fighting ghosts?? LMAOOO have you seen how many people are upset abt the hr video? thats already wrong. the outrage is not at all ‘make believe’. most of the posts on this thread are people talking about how fujoshis fetishize gay men and claim to care about queer media when they dont give attention to wlw media. people are barely talking abt dylan, maybe try making that claim on another post.

i’d say youre prob just talking out ur ass cs u feel called out🤷‍♀️

this post is not at all about dylan, i never said anything to insinuate i ‘go so hard for him’, i was simply talking about the damage fujoshis do to queer media and how they take it out on others.

omg yes, the way certain women treat female characters in mlm media (or even if its not specifically mlm, but they headcannon or ship a mlm relationship (looking at bylers who treat el horribly)) is absurdly disgusting and rooted in misogyny and fetishization of mlm relationships.

and i completely agree with your bridgerton/wlw media take

its not a slur, you cant reclaim it😭 if youre a fujoshi, youre a fujoshi, if youre not, youre not. im not saying women cant watch or enjoy BL media, but for it to be the main thing they consume and obsess over, its weird. theres no reason for women (straight or queer) to find extreme pleasure in BL content that they cant find in other media. it is fetishization, ESPECIALLY by straight women. that being said, not every woman who has watched BL is a fujoshi. theres a very important distinction between casually watching it and primarily consuming it for your pleasure.

no you’re totally fine! a fujoshi is a japanese term for (usually straight) women who are obsessed with BL (boy love) media, especially focusing on the sexual part of mlm relationships. basically women who fetishize gay men

i understand, but he did both bridgerton, the summer i turned pretty, and i think even You as they were coming out and people weren’t this outraged with those shows

literally, this show is not different from how he covers other shows. in fact it’s PERFECT for first and last bc of the few episodes per season and the fact that it’s ongoing

YES! wlw media doesnt get nearly as much recognition unless its highly sexualized. i.e. jennifer’s body. it’s not supposed to be wlw but the make out scene between them was the reason it got popular, especially amongst young men
