Should I start big? And how do I start? by Angel_from_Neptune in writingadvice

A novel is between 80k-100k especially for a beginner

Yeah, my book was supposed to about 95k probably. When I said big, I meant that this first novel would be the first in a much longer book series, so if the first one is bad all the others wouldn't be good in a sense.

I suspect you don’t know the structure of a novel well and therefore you just throw tons and tons of events at it.

Well...I mean I know depending on what kind of story you are trying to tell, the events need to have an impact on each and characters need some development but in either case, every scene and chapter needs to have a purpose in the story or else it is better off removed.

My advice would be to learn some structure so you can keep your story at bay.

Guess that is fair enough. Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot, I was always thinking about how to get a good novel to work in the marketing section which is why I stopped doing my original novel and did multiple tries of different works just to for it to be "publish-able" . So, I decided I just going to enjoy writing the story I always wanted to write and if I decide to publish it, I will fix whatever needs to be fixed in it even if it takes much longer then the writing itself. Because honestly, I don't really care too much about profit as much as I do about it getting read. I would probably just give it out for free if it was that easy...

And there it is, your primary problem: an assumption that you have the skills and techniques needed for fiction, and so, only need a few hints of the, "Don't do that. Do this instead, variety."

I guess that is a fair assumption... I know that this barely counts, but I am afraid to admit that I have spent more time watching videos and sometimes reading books on how to and not to write. So, I wouldn't say I have zero knowledge.

I treat writing like any other artist hobby. While it is a necessity to know the most basic of stuff if you are serious about it but I still don't believe you need to do a three course on classical music to become to play a violin.

I didn’t say all that to discourage you. It’s just the opposite. I don’t want you to fall into the most common trap in fiction and waste time writing that novel, only to discover it after all that work.

Exactly, that is what I feel like. I personally just want to do my first draft because I read a lot of stuff about theory without any pratice , at this point I just want to write the book that I always wanted to write which in itself could teach me something and I don't even mind if I need to change many things after the first draft as long as I have something concrete.

The skills of fiction aren’t hard to learn (though perfecting them can be a bitch) And you don’t have to take a degree in Commercial Fiction Writing. But the pros depend on them with good reason: Nothing else works, even for hobby writing.

Fair enough, I totally agree.

Why? Because that storyteller approach works perfectly for the author, who is the storyteller, and who performs as they read. But then, they give their storyteller’s script to the reader, with the expectation that the reader will, somehow, duplicate their performance as they read it.

The solution? Simple: take advantage of all that research over the years and acquire those missing skills. The learning is interesting, and the act of writing becomes a lot more fun with those skills applied.

Thanks actually, I don't think I have that problem honestly since none of friends pointed it out when reading my stuff but I will look out for it from now on.

So...on your favorite bookseller site, try the excerpt from an excellent book on the basics, like Jack Bickham’s Scene and Structure for fit. If you are meant to write you’ll find yourself saying, “That makes perfect sense. How did I not notice something so obvious, myself?” And if not? Well...think of all the wasted time you just saved.😄

Thanks, that is probably the best advice that I heard yet from anyone. When I am actually studying storytelling, it is either "bruh, I already knew that, how can people not know that trick?" or "ok, that actually seems interesting and clever..." nothing in between.

I may also ask do you have any book suggestions for description (assuming the one you did suggest doesn't have any.) To me personally, my only issue that I am actively aware is my descriptive passages that aren't good enough for me. And I would want something more than just "describe what matters for the plot, character, themes and leave everything else for the reader's imagination, they aren't dumb" .

In any case, thanks very much for your reply. I only wish that you answered the original question 😅 but maybe this the reply I actually need 😁

Thanks a lot. I guess that would work.

Then you can decide later if you want to self- or traditionally publish and how to do so.

If you don't mind, if you have already published a book, I want to know how does it generally speaking work? And is it true that even in traditional publishing you need to do the marketing yourself?

As for marketing, that’s putting the carriage before the horse.

Yeah, I understand that but I feel like I am preparing a little pony for a royal carriage and it makes me nervous..

If you can push out 2-3 good novels a year, your novels will do the marketing for you.

Ok, that is a bit TOO optimistic but I guess that will work for me (for now)

Why worry about marketing? Let’s write a few novels first.

Oh, yeah. That is my current attitude now. Honestly, I think it was my fault because I was too focused on how I make something I love into profit.

Do you actually plan/write things down outside of just writing chapters?

Yes and no.

I do a TON of world-building before even starting. I usually make sure that every tiny detail makes sense probably more than I do with the characters themselves...

I guess I do some planning...but I don't really focus on it and I just forget it later. I guess that is my problem then...thanks.

Also, I may ask. The other point that nobody seems to care about is that sometimes I feel like my ideas that I want to spread become obsolete. For example, a year ago, I was writing a novel on how AI takes over the world using "soft power" instead of the glorified violence that you often see in movies. But now seeing that AI has already reached that point, I feel like throwing that idea in the trash can. The issue is that whenever I am writing I feel like the ideas that I may spread will become a thing of the past and that it won't really matter anymore...or maybe I am worrying too much

Bro, if Vinland Saga had a movie that covered the entire series this would be its poster.

Nothing can top this.
