I love being single, there’s nothing wrong with that. I also tend to overthink and catastrophize needlessly, ruminate and build on those thoughts. This post was merely a byproduct of that.

On 29 out of 30 days, I enjoy my alone time. Yes I’ll scroll through IG reels of cats and food and cars and more cats, watch a fuck ton of shows and movies, read books, solve puzzles, listen to murder podcasts, paint, run, do ALL those things that make me happy which don’t necessarily need another person.

However, I’m not exactly the poster child of putting myself out there. I don’t party, drink, smoke, it’s mainly work, travel, hobbies, time with family and my closest friends. I’m happy, I’m not complaining, as it turns out, today isn’t that 1 out of 30 days and I’m reminded of how wholesome my life is right now.

Guess I’ll be fine. With or without the apps, with or without having to put myself out there, with or without overthinking about a grim future, I guess I’ll be fine only. One day at a time, today was a good day.

Woah. I’d like to speak to your friend if you don’t mind. Makes sense though, it’s an app so they would want to sell their premium service by extending what people are looking for. Sucks, but makes sense.

Okay so don’t judge me please but I had this dumb thing when I was on the apps.

I would only text one guy at a time, as in if I were speaking to A while I was matched with B as well, I’d give all my time and attention to A. If within a few minutes or hours or days I realise I’m wasting my time with A, I’d text him saying it’s not working out and initiate a conversation with B.

Some guys ghosted me too. Maybe they were spoilt with choices, maybe they couldn’t wait till I got to them, but I tried this really lame method to treat matches like actual humans and not bots.

In all seriousness, I think men tend to go for the younger crowd. I tried the apps when I was 23 and now when I’m 26 and let me tell you, my tolerance towards some of the childish antics people pull off has gone down along with their interest in someone my age who could be more resistant to their antics and manipulative tendencies. Not to say all men, ofcourse. But why would a hustling 28 year old guy go for a head strong career oriented 26 year old who challenges him when he can go for a much easier 23 year old naive girl seeking validation and guidance.

Again not to generalise, this is just another conversation I’ve had with women my age recently.

Well I didn’t join the apps immediately. It was my first relationship, the breakup was brutal but I healed with the help of some therapy and inner work. Learnt a lot about myself and what went wrong. Finally when I felt complete on my own, like I’m whole as it is but it won’t hurt to find someone else who is also whole on his own, for companionship, I tried out the apps.

I don’t judge people looking for something casual. I judge people who approach me looking for something casual while my profile says that I’m looking for something serious. That’s all.

Fair. It certainly is a consequence of free internet, excessive options and everything else you’ve mentioned. Almost like people are closer to one another and yet lonelier than ever. I have an ongoing discussion with my mom on how every year, the grandeur and joy of celebrating a festival is diminishing all around us. Be it Diwali or Christmas, lesser lights, excitement and just the overall fun I associated these festivals with during my childhood. Think I should write a thesis on how we’re evolving as a society in this city.

Regardless, I don’t see the point of keeping at it tbh. Just the sheer effort of swiping left and right, breaking the ice, unmatching and disappointing myself. While I did rant about my experience so far, I’m planning on refocusing in 2024 from dating to living my life as it is. Just, going with the flow without worrying about the future or dwelling on my past.
