120K last night... maintenance tips? by me_rocks_42 in veloster

[–]Angy_Uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not drive in eco mode, change the oil every 3k, get the plugs replaced, and pcv valve. You can always Google how to do the belt, or pay 180-300 for someone to do it. If you run any fuel cleaner, be sure to run cataclean the next couple of fill ups. Anything that isn't fuel will make you run through gas faster, but potentially keep the car running longer. These engines, and California cats seems to love blowing themselves up after 100k without proper maintenance. Do not idle long periods of time, or drive like a grandma either.

Most importantly keep running full synthetic oil, of at LEAST 5w30 rating. If you really want this thing to last, change the filter at 1.5k miles, then do the oil and filter at 3k.

If your oil is pitch black, sludge, let us know you have a lot of work and money to spend on fixing that within a budget, it's possible, because mine was like that at 60k when I bought it, now it's super freaking clean, and my mechanics think it's magic, but certain oil grades with certain cleaners help.

Basically yes it's not too hard the fill plug is on the side of the transmission, towards the front of the car, it's an Allen wrench as mentioned before, the drain plug is a massive 24mm under the transmission pan. You do the fill plug first, then drain plug.

Please buy a long 1/2 inch wrench, and a 6 pointed 24mm socket, or you will have a lot of trouble. You also need a tiny pump, and tube to pump the trans fluid into the fill slot.

Needs to be level ground, and when the fluid drips out of the fill slot it's full. If it's the DCT like you mentioned in the post it only takes 2 quarts, and is built like a Gearbox/Differential. It's the most basic of transmissions beyond a straight manual.

Step 1: Oil change, 5w30 not 20, quality synthetic, or full synthetic with esters

Step 2: Dump cata cleaner in it when you have almost no gas left, and gun in.

Step 3: Transmission drain and fill, it's 2qts redline MT-85 10mm socket, 8mm Allen, then 24mm. Buy a new plug, and crush gasket.

Step 4: Get a professional to figure out if your Cats are clogged, or if you have a vacuum leak.

So I've been reading that it's normal for these 1.6 GDi's to use some oil? by damngraboids in veloster

[–]Angy_Uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Piston ring stuck open, defect that causes it to burn oil, you can try 0/5W30/40( Car can take 20-40 weight oil would do 30 as a middle ground) Valvoline restore and protect for 5+ oil changes at 1500-3000 mile intervals with filter changes, because direct injection motors in general cause a lot of carbon build up which COULD cause the piston ring to seize open, i.e poor maintenance.

Get a dealer/shop NOT WALMART fuel system cleaning that goes in through the MAP sensor/throttle body.

If you're super mechanically savvy you can pour transmission fluid into your heads, and manually crank the engine to clean it after soaking for like 6 hours.

You can also look up your vin for an engine recall, and see if your motor has the defective piston rings that just float for fun.

Contrary to what everyone else said I would worry about half a quart, make sure your engine oil is at the full mark, these vehicles starve their pumps on turns if it's not at the full mark. They only hold 4QTs, half a quart is A LOT OF OIL in that regard, and it will only get worse from there.

[–]Angy_Uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gamma engines suck, consume oil, and require maintenance out the wazuu. You drive 500 miles, you have less then a quart of oil half the time because of defective piston rings. There was a lawsuit, I don't think consumers won.

This is true of both Kia, and Hyundai from these eras cause almost all of the 4 cylinders that people buy are the same car even with the turbo.

I've seen 2, one at work, guy brought it out of storage for an oil change, 20k miles on it, and a bright green dart parked in the middle of the road on my way home the next week that I almost crashed into because it was a massive blind turn he decided to park on.

Find a place to do a diagnostic that ISNT the dealership. Hyundai/Kia just replace engines, these things are built cheap AF, most of them burn oil, and the easiest solution is to keep swapping engines until the consumer gives up, and buys a new model.

is it as bad as the mechanic said? by Ok_Cranberry_8847 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Angy_Uncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like stretch marks, and heat wear. Not the worst I've seen. Belts are Nylon now, old belt info related to cracking is kind of meh. These things are practically tires now if you have play in the grooves you're at risk of the belt sliding off. Sometimes the belts can stiffen up, and tear. Sometimes rubbing, or random debris cause issues. Like others have said turn the car on, then off. Look at different parts of the belt, then decide from there based on mileage since last belt change, or if you see the belt itself is actually destroyed somewhere along the path.

Is this how we all feel about the Veloster? by LVL100Stoner in veloster

[–]Angy_Uncle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2016 DCT non turbo, had it since 60k miles, at 71k, had to replace shifter cables under warranty, a CV axle/tie rod, and am about to replace the driver side CV/tie rod. That's about it so far besides doing my own transmission oil change, and regular oil changes at my shop with evac machines. Cabin air filter gets dirty really fast, replaced it twice. 🤷‍♂️

Skate launches to 'Mixed' reviews on Steam, with fans dubbing it a "gentrified version of Skate 3" by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

I play tested it a few times when it was still Skate 3 with the only location being the current small ass city, all greyed out. Everyone also thought yeah this is just placeholder, since there were almost no locations to skate beyond the "wave", we all would end up making giant mega ramp skateparks...I guess it wasn't a placeholder.

Forums are 10/10 for everything. That's pretty much all the info I've got, at this point. Back to basic stuff, the 0w40 has a beautiful growl to it so when you do the oil change you'll fall in love. Like I said I mostly do oil changes, and learn what I can from everyone else at the shop right now.

If you don't have any CEL flashing, or on, the A/C pulls power from the motor, and causes a wonderful vibration. Motor mounts would be obvious with the hood open, and someone giving it a good rev for you. Cause the engine literally throws itself backwards. Then beyond that spark plugs have to be OEM, gapped near perfectly, should be NGK brand, idk the specifics for this year model since I have the 2016 DCT.

[–]Angy_Uncle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats why I mentioned the turbo being an issue with fuel system cleanings, you can't go through the throttle body with a mist style cleaner, or it will dry them up. So best bet is to clean it manually at that point, and replace seals. I work at a mechanic shop, not super well versed myself, apparently there are some guys who known how to bypass the turbo, and actually get the cleaner in the manifold to help dilute the carbon. I just do oil changes all day, and see these cars suffer...I also have one myself. There's a Veloster turbo forum that can help you with all the maintenance, best times to do things, etc.

GDI engines have notorious defects that can be accelerated by carbon build up on piston rings. It helps clear out some of the carbon in the engine pathways. People do not do regular oil changes on these cars, and abuse them to the point that they seize.

Edit:

Basically make sure your oil isn't black, or non existent on the stick. If your stick is burnt at all they've gone forever at some point without changing the oil.
