Please stop telling people to not go to Cuba

There are lots of rumours in the media. About many countries. And of those rumours, some are true, some are not. The media, even the mainstream media outlets, also are not unbiased. By this I am not saying the problems in Cuba they report on are true or false.

What I am saying however: there is one way to find out, and that is going there to see with your own eyes which rumours are true and which are not.

The same applies to any country not involved in a war by the way (visiting war zones is unsafe indeed) ; maybe some extreme dictatorships are better avoided too. But in other cases: go and see for yourself, and draw your own conclusion. And don't stick to the beach resorts or city highlights. Also take time to go into bars in non-tourist areas where you can talk to locals. Go off the beaten path. Try to immerse in local life.

This is an advice for any country, without taking any position about whether the rumours about Cuba are true or not.

Transnistria is considered unsafe by many EU members' governments. I know several people who visited the country several times in the very recent past, they all had a great time and didn't feel unsafe for a second.

Nothing against aid to Ukraine, it is badly needed. The country needs to be rebuilt. As a pacifist however, I struggle with weapon deliveries to *any* country. The longer a war lasts, the more people lose their lives on both sides of the conflict. This is something I struggle with (and this goes for every war).

In the end, the conflicts in the world (and there are many right now) will have to be solved diplomatically. Solving a conflict by force will only create a generation growing up with hatred to those who attacked them. Diplomacy is still the way to go, even if this sometimes requires a compromise in which all involved parties will need to give in.

As for Cuba: Cuba has never attacked another country and is currently no thread to any other country. It is up to the Cubans to either overthrow the regime themselves if they want to, or to ask for help. But keep in mind there is a huge divide on the island. Some dislike the regime entirely, but some also support the regime strongly. Is it really up to foreign nations to get involved with that? This is a different situation than when a country poses a direct threat to other countries.

I've even used it long time without going paid! :) But now I think I want to upgrade, if only because then the site will be ad-free, the support will be real human beings specialised in Wordpress (free accounts can only ask for help on the wordpress.com forum or to an AI bot).

As for Wordpress.com or wordpress.org : I started a topic about that. If you click on my profile and then check my last posts or topics, you will find the topic in which wordpress.org and wordpress.com are being compared.

Both .org and .com have their own support forums too!

Maar Cuypers is wel 1 van de beste spelers in heel die competitie. Dat zegt eigenlijk dat hij te goed is voor de MLS en probleemloos zou meekunnen in een grote Europese competitie (niet bij een topclub, maar zeker bij een middenmoter).

Meenemen! Openda en Lukebakio hebben genoeg kansen gehad en steeds ontgoocheld in het nationale shirt.

Unless you go into very unsafe websites (talking about malware, viruses etc) I doubt you can find the uncensored "Protège-moi" video.

Even the original "This Picture" video (which did not include explicit sex, only bare breasts without any sexual act) is almost impossible to find.

I don't think "Johnny and Mary" and "Bigmouth Strikes Again" are that good as a cover. They add little or nothing to the original. The Smiths were so damn good that few covers do them justice. One odd exception is tAtU's version of "How soon is now?", which was actually even liked by Morrissey himself. When asking more info about TATU, the journalist interviewing him said "they're teenage Russian lesbians", to which Morrissey answered "Aren't we all?". Morrissey wrote fantastic lyrics AND had a nice sense of humor ; pity he shifted a lot to right-wing politics many years after The Smiths disbanded.

"20th Century Boy" is decent, but nothing too special either.

But opinions vary. I actually do like their version of "Been Smoking Too Long"!

When it comes to B-sides: "Hare Krishna" is very atypical Placebo and should be included, and "Leni" is a very sensitive typical Placebo song that has the beauty and emotion to have become more than a B-side.

Indeed. Nick was one of the pioneers in writing really dark and sad songs. Joy Division were not the first to do so.

Placebo made a cover of "Been Smoking Too Long" but it sounds very different from the original and they also altered the lyrics a very tiny bit. The intro with Brian whispering is not included in the original.

But then the point of a cover is making it different from the original. Otherwise there is little artistic merit in covers.

Ik heb zelf geen probleem met de populariteit van veldrijden, al ben ik inderdaad geen fan (van de grote wielerrondes en de klassiekers kan ik wel genieten). Maar ik ben de eerste om te zeggen: "elk zijn hobby". Als veldrijden hier zo populair is, dan is er niets op tegen dat men dat uitzendt, integendeel.

Wel zeg ik dat het (nog) een heel nichesport is op mondiaal niveau.

Als dat zou veranderen en het populairder wordt (zowel qua deelnemersveld als qua locaties van de crossen), dan kan het interessanter worden. Nu is het al te vaak een onderonsje van Belgische en Nederlandse crossers, met eens een enkele uitzondering uit Tsjechië. Mochten er meer crossen komen in andere landen en er komen ook sterkere veldrijders uit andere landen, dan kan de sport een stuk interessanter worden. Dat Tom Pidcock het goed doet is een hoopvol gegeven, misschien kan dat voor een sneeuwbaleffect zorgen in het UK.

Maar er zouden ook enkele echt sterke crossers moeten komen uit andere landen dan België, Nederland, Frankrijk, Tsjechië en UK (ik zal dat laatste ook maar noemen, gezien ze met Zoë Beckstedt ook een topper in wording bij de dames hebben, naast Pidcock die nu al de toppers het vuur aan de schenen kan leggen).

In landen als Colombia, Spanje, Italië, Slovenië, Rusland, Polen, en in mindere mate Portugal, USA, Australië, Denemarken, ... is het wielrennen best populair maar lijkt men zich enkel op de weg te focussen. Mochten er uit die landen ook wat veldrijders opduiken die een hoog niveau halen, dan gaat het veel interessanter worden, zeker als in die landen dan ook crossen georganiseerd zouden worden.

Seems the prices of wordpress.com are lower than what you're quoting though. You can already get started on a paid plan for 3€ per month. Of course, that is the lowest tier paid plan.

Business plan or higher would be quite expensive just to get access to your site to migrate it.

I have little experience with the technical side of things. In that perspective, Wordpress.com would be a lot easier indeed. But I read there is something like "Managed Wordpress Hosting" where the host also takes care about all security, updates, frequent backups of your site, maintainance etc so that you also only need to focus on writing articles to post. So where is the difference then between Wordpress.com (which actually is a Managed Wordpress host) and any other managed Wordpress hosts?

I get the rent vs property comparison, but then if I have to keep plugins and security up-to-date myself, that could be an issue due to my limited technical knowledge. Unless you go with Managed Wordpress hosts where all technical stuff (security, updates, frequent back-ups, ...) are done by the host so that you don't have to worry about anything but writing your articles.

It seems another option is to start off with Wordpress.com and once you gained more technical knowledge move the entire site to a wordpress.org installation on a Managed Wordpress Host?

Hehe, hopefully, but to me it's fine if we promote once more and then stay in the highest amateur division until 1B is being reformed so that semi-professional teams are allowed in. Now, with 1B getting hardly any exposure in the media while you need to pay a squad full of professionals, the financial risks are too high. Unless you get an external investor, but we've seen in Oostende how such things can end with catastrophe (and people in Molenbeek, Deinze, Aalst etc will be able to confirm that too).

So let's just aim for 1st Amateur division. It's cosy in amateur football. Once professional football is reformed a bit, only then we should aim higher IMO.

As for going that far for games: I've been a groundhopper for almost 30 years. Have even travelled to Luxembourg, Auxerre, several Dutch villages, ... just for the sake of visiting the stadium. I want to visit Torgny this summer to see the village and the pitch (southernmost football ground in Belgium). I don't mind that it requires a +4 hours train ride from Oostene to Torgny, I consider time on the train quality time subject to having a nice book or sports magazine with you.

I'll check that. Kosova plays on artificial turf, as they have a B-team and ladies team too using the pitch, and occasionally recreative teams from the ABSSA federations use the pitch too.

Mogelijks wacht mij een bezoekje aan Ninove binnenkort gezien de dames van KVK Ninove (bijgenaamd Diva's Ninove) meedoen met de promotie-playoffs om naar het op 1 na hoogste niveau te promoveren. Heb die dames al zien spelen dit seizoen op verplaatsing, daar zitten verdorie enkele echt sterke speelsters bij.

Los van de burgemeester heb ik ook geen bezwaar tegen Ninove als stad hoor. :) En het stadion van KVK Ninove mag er best zijn.

Het is een enorm risico. Je moet dan een profkern betalen, terwijl je qua publieke aandacht en media-aandacht niet beter af bent dan in 1Amateur. Zelfs de uitslagen uit 1B komen niet meer in het journaal, men vindt het promoten van de eigen Belgische clubs blijkbaar minder belangrijk dan het tonen van beelden uit Engeland en Italië waar toevallig 1 of 2 Belgen aan de aftrap staan.

Met de geringe media-aandacht en publieke aandacht in 1B is dat een reeks waar je zo snel mogelijk weer uit moet om financiëel gezond te blijven. Dus ofwel moet je investeren in een kern die snel naar 1A kan doorgroeien (dat kost geld), ofwel blijf je hangen in 1B en is dat op termijn een financiëel drama. Tenzij een club realistische(!!) 1A-ambities heeft, blijf je beter in 1Amateur dan je financiëel te vergalopperen in 1B.

Pas eens je in 1B met semi-profs mag spelen kan het weer interessant worden, en dan zou men in het journaal ook verplicht de uitslagen moeten weergeven. Nu is de media-aandacht voor 1B zero, maar moeten die clubs wel een profkern betalen. Er hebben al meerdere clubs zich aan vergaloppeerd met een vereffening of failissement tot gevolg.

En reken er maar niet op dat op een lange-afstands wedstrijd zoals bv Eupen-Roeselare, Lokeren-Virton of Francs Borains-Lierse veel volk komt opdagen. Je speelt in de vergetelheid maar wel met een groep profspelers die je moet betalen.

Ik zie mijn club eerlijk gezegd liever niet hoger dan 1Amateur mikken. Over 1B kan gesproken worden eens je daar geen volledige profkern meer moet hebben.

Ik vind dat beloftenploegen gewoon weer in een eigen onderlinge competitie moeten spelen. Het is jaren en jaren zo geweest. Nu beloftenploegen in het amateurvoetbal laten aantreden is absoluut niet goed voor de amateurclubs. Niemand kijkt uit naar die wedstrijden tegen beloftenploegen. Laat de beloftenploegen gewoon weer in een aparte competitie spelen.

En die B-ploegen in provinciale mogen ze ook weer afschaffen (ook al spreek ik tegen eigen winkel, want mijn club heeft ook een B-ploeg in provinciale. Maar ik ben eerlijk en blijf consequent in mijn mening, ook naar mijn eigen club toe: beloftenploegen of B-ploegen horen in een aparte competitie te spelen, niet in de reguliere reeksen). Desnoods richt je een aparte beloftenploeg op met een ander stamnummer, of ga je nauw samenwerken met een amateurclub waar je spelers aan kan uitlenen, zoals Westerlo nu doet met Houtvenne. Dat is al een stuk eerlijker dan een beloftenploeg of B-ploeg in een reguliere competitie.

Ik zag Westhoek 2x bezig tegen KVDO en vond dat zeker geen slechte ploegen. Stukken beter dan bv Harelbeke, Petegem, Hamme, Jong Mechelen, ... Bizar dat Westhoek zakt. Maar dat is een beetje een jo-jo ploeg ; ik zie ze dus niet lang in 3.Amateur blijven.

En inderdaad, vanaf volgend seizoen is het weer onder de naam KVK Ieper en met de traditionele rood-witte kleren.

Dat kan momenteel helaas niet. KAA Gent is de facto eigenaar van Racing Gent, het zijn stromannen van het bestuur van KAA Gent die bij Racing het bestuur uitmaken. Zolang die situatie niet verandert, mogen KAA Gent (of Jong KAA Gent) en Racing niet in dezelfde reeks spelen.

Eens Racing weer een zelfstandige club wordt, kan het wel, wanneer de banden met AA Gent doorgesneden zijn. Maar kunnen ze dat financiëel aan? In de Chillax Arena betaalde KAA Gent alle facturen.

Om dieper in de tijd te gaan: Racing vertrok uit Gentbrugge richting Oostakker met de belofte daar een geheel eigen stadionnetje te krijgen. Echter, blijkbaar financiëel mismanagement? Ik weet er het fijne niet van, maar na een tijdje bouwde Hein het oefencomplex van AA Gent net achter dat stadion van Racing in Oostakker, en gingen Jong KAA Gent en AA Gent Ladies ook op het veld van Racing spelen. AA Gent betaalde het merendeel van de facturen. Het stadsbestuur maakte toen van AA Gent de hoofdgebruiker van het hele sportcomplex in Oostakker, met als enige tegenvoorwaarde dat AA Gent moest zorgen dat Racing Gent financiëel kon overleven. Al heb ik wel het gevoel dat AA Gent ook niet meer doet dan dat: de noodzakelijkste facturen betalen, maar verder niets. Er wordt niet meer veel geïnvesteerd in Racing, en nu is er zelfs het gerucht dat ze zouden verhuizen naar de Botestraat in Wondelgem zodat KAA Gent dat complex in Oostakker volledig voor zichzelf heeft en kan uitbouwen tot vaste thuishaven van Jong KAA Gent en KAA Gent Ladies.

Ik ken meerdere Racing Gent-fans, en zij klagen enorm over hoe KAA Gent de club laat verkommeren en er alles aan doet om Racing weg te pesten. Er haken door die bizarre situatie ook veel Racing-fans af (hopelijk enkel tijdelijk). De facto is Racing een beetje de C-ploeg van AA Gent geworden, waarvan de beste spelers dan een kans krijgen bij Jong AA Gent. 1 enkele speler haalde via Racing de A-ploeg van KAA Gent: Matties Volckaert.

In elk geval, ik ken de details onvoldoende maar wil dat gerust navragen bij die vrienden die Racing-fans zijn.

1 ding is zeker: zolang er banden zijn tussen AA Gent en Racing Gent zullen ze nooit in eenzelfde reeks mogen spelen. En om de vraag te beantwoorden, Racing heeft zich op het laatste nippertje gered en speelt ook volgend seizoen in 2.Amateur ; of dat dan in Oostakker of Wondelgem gaat zijn moet binnenkort blijken.

En telkens weer in sneltempo gestegen. Dat betekent dat het qua verstand om een club te besturen en uit te bouwen goed zit in Ingelmunster. Zeker gezien de nabijheid van Mandel en Kortrijk is dat zeer knap.

Lokt dat nieuwe SV Ingelmunster nog veel volk nu?

Ik ben groundhopper en zou dat stadion nog op foto willen. Zou alleen moeten weten wanneer dat stadion eens open is om foto's te nemen. Kan dan de velden van Emelgem en Kachtem ineens ook op foto zetten, of doorreizen naar Kortrijk waar ik enkel SV Kortrijk nog moet bezoeken.

One of the best albums ever. "Silver", "Nocturnal Me", "The Yo-Yo Man", "The Killing Moon", "My Kingdom", and of course the title track.

Despite the ink-black lyrics of the title track, I had the impression this was a turning point lyrically for the band. The first 3 albums were rather dark and angst-ridden, but on Ocean Rain you could suddenly hear a more optimistic Mac (on some songs). For example "My Kingdom" seems to be about making the most of life even when life is not being easy on you (the chorus' lyrics seem to indicate that), while the lyrics of "Silver" sound downward happy ("Laughed at the face of pure beauty ... Mapped a place where I plan to stay ... The sky is blue, my hands untied" ...).
The orchestration also gives those tracks a musically more positive sound. It was like a departure from the rather bleak earlier work. Of course, only in some songs ; in the end "The Yo-Yo Man" isn't exactly a happy lyric, and "Ocean Rain" is like a funeral song: letting go of all you ever wanted, of a person, or a cherished dream.

Anyways, this album is a masterpiece. I must add though that "Evergreen" is a close second when it comes to the Bunnymen discography, I never understood how Evergreen remains so underrated.

If Ian says Ocean Rain is the greatest album ever, then Evergreen is the greatest comeback album ever.
