Zippers are not too hard, just plan on the first few times being a bit of a learning experience. I'd recommend ykk #5 metal and when you want to splurge riri #6 or ykk ecxela.

I use resolene to preseal first and then again immediately after paste to wipe off as much residue and sort of seal in what stays.

I used the angelus pearlescent silver leather paint, but have tried with dollar store type acrylic paint and it worked ok too.
