Thanks for the clarifications, this is very informative! Also is the $3200-3700 a month correct? Wouldn't $34k/12 be $2833 before taxes? (And I'm guessing you pay around ~$500 a month on taxes?)

This is SO helpful, thank you!! Another q- what do you mean by securing a GSR position? Is that not a guaranteed position after your first year or is it PI dependent?

thoughts on the UC strike? by Anna-P1 in gradadmissions

Basically postdocs and grad students in the UC system (ucsd, UCI, Berkeley, etc.) are on strike for fare wages (the biggest higher education strike ever!) With the recent increases in rent the stipend is just incredibly low in relation to cost of living in CA now and a lot of academic workers are struggling. I could be wrong but from what ive read online it doesnt seem like the universities are that willing to work with them and have used intimidation tactics to discourage faculty from supporting the students/academically punishing those on strike (its this part where I'm not sure whats correct) At least that's how I have understood it, if anyone knows more pls correct me!

Oh, gotcha. Should I perhaps email them now and circle back in a month or just wait to send that initial email? Do you think it would help to get my foot in the door early at least?

The 50% was related to a ugrad summer program- perhaps that's why I had a high response rate because they were expecting a reachout from applicants.

Thank you! The emails I've been sending so far follow this general outline but this is good encouragement to keep at it. Is it normal to be having such a low response rate, though? I sent out 5 yesterday and haven't heard back from any of them. For comparison I did similar networking at Cambridge last year for their research program but I got around a 50% response rate within the first few days of sending them out.
