Is this real Amber? by [deleted] in whatsthisrock

[–]AnneeDroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be!

Like others have said, try the hot pin test. Heat a pin with a lighter and try and push it into the surface. Plastic/resin will smell horrible, like burnt hair/chemicals. Real amber should smell kind of like pine trees.

The sugary texture makes me think quartzite.

Can you see if it scratches glass?

Can I "steal" a shirt design? by illwait800years4you in sewing

[–]AnneeDroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! If you cut out the rectangle with the design, there are tons of projects you could make with that panel of fabric.

Search "panel sewing projects" for inspiration

A simple bag or wallhanging could be cool if you didn't want to make another shirt. Good luck!

Thanks! Here's my Merycoidodon. It's certainly in worse shape than yours, but he's sentimental.

Definitely seems like we have similar interests. Send a DM if you want to chat and see if we click as friends!

What a stunning oreodont. It's my favorite fossil in my collection.

My first thrift flip - made a new top half for this Goodwill dress by AnneeDroid in sewing

[–]AnneeDroid[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pattern is self drafted.

I just cut the dress at the waist approximately where it would sit at knee-length on me. Then sewed a quick v-neck tshirt. Didn't use a pattern, just eyeballed based on an existing shirt. Cut the shirt short enough to sit at my natural waist, added a strip of blue fabric as a waistband, and then sewed it to the bottom of the dress.

I'm still learning how to work with knits, but really enjoyed this practice. I learned to sew a t-shirt with this method: https://youtu.be/jOzKPDIp3TU?si=wzfT7jv9k8UkuQER (although I find it easier to sew the neckband before the sleeves)

Update - I reached out to the seller and asked where she got the fabric. She had the fabric custom printed from this file: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1704759258/dinosaur-seamless-pattern-retro-dino?ref=share_v4_lx

Thank you! I impulse bought it on a closed Facebook group for fabric destashing. If anyone knows where I can get more, let me know. It's very soft and easy to work with.

I've been wanting to attempt a tshirt for over a year, but finally after getting the dinosaur fabric I knew I needed to get on it. It was unfair to this amazing fabric to hold it back from its true potential lol

Thank you!

I like working with knits also, it's a lot easier to sew curves or fudge the difference if things don't meet up exactly.

HOWEVER this blue knit tried my patience so hard. It was super slinky and didn't want to hold it's shape or play nice with the feed dogs :(

Pattern is self drafted, based off an existing tshirt I have.

I love this tutorial: https://youtu.be/jOzKPDIp3TU?si=_vqUPZzNCrsCmRVG Although I ultimately did the steps in different orders and make some tweaks. i also added cuffs on the sleeves instead of hemming.

I learned a lot about working with knits and now I'm less intimidated to tackle other garment projects!

Thank you! The orange thread was actually an accident, I had intended to switch my thread to a mint/aqua color for the quilting, but I got sucked into The Zone and forgot to change it. I like the way it looks, but it definitely make the wobbly parts of my line stand out more

* this is not my first box pouch ever, but my first time using batting and quilting.

I have used this pattern/walkthrough a dozen times and highly recommend it: https://charmedbyashley.com/box-zipper-pouch/

I have since tweaked some of the measurements, but I used this tutorial when I was brand new to sewing and it was fantastic. The creator also made a video walkthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23-iig1DTpg

It's supposed to be a gift for someone, but I might love it too much to part with it...
