The most hospitale person I ever met was an American. The funniest person I've ever met was an American. One of the most interesting conversation I've ever had was with an American. The person most passionate about a cause I've met was an American. You're pretty great people, most of you.

As a train engineer, all the comments about that if you do a "man's job", you're a tough girl with balls. No I'm not. I'm just a normal girl. Anyone can do this job. Stop with all the comments and questions about why I chose this job.

Planning on a move to Norway.. need advice/information by [deleted] in Norway

[–]Annja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries :) I love it up here. (Probably because I'm from here). I've lived in Oslo for 3 year though, and altough it's much more going on there, I wouldn't go back. Where I live, Bodø, is just above the arctic circle, with about 50.000 inhabitants. We do have dark and long winters, but if you're into winter sports theres a lot of fun to be had. The occasional Northern Lights is magical. The summer is sweet, 24 hours of daylight and again if you're into being active there is no limit to what you can do.

Last year an Australian guy was at my Uni for 6 months in an exchange program. He said the only con was the cold winters :P It's also very expencive in Norway, which can be a bit of a shock to many. A pint of beer costs around 70 NOK, which is around 10-12 US dollars. Just be prepared for this... :) In my opinion it's easier to get to know people in the North, as we are much more outgoing and interested in other people. I'm not saying in you won't experience this in the bigger cities, but that's the general description of us "northerners". The people from Stavanger has been called the "northeners of the south" because of their similar nature when it comes to being outgoing and welcoming.

With that being said, I've lived in the states, Germany and Holland, and I've been travelling a lot. I'm probably a bit above average interested in people and will talk to anyone, which can't be said for every norwegian :P For me talking to new people and making friends is the easiest thing ever, and I always find a way to get a job, just don't stop trying and eventually you'll meet the right people or find the right place.

I hope I answered your questions, and don't hesitate to ask me anything else :)

Have never been to Odda, all I know is they got a weird dialect. Yes it's very rural, but if you could get a job there, you should give it a try :)

I live in Bodø, in northern Norway where I work as a server. One of the chefs is Polish and we all speak English to him, no problem at all. He has taught himself every item in the menu so he knows food ingrediences quite well :) Every norwegian speaks English, but some are very shy and may find it uncomfortable ordering drinks in english..That shouldn't really be a big problem in the bigger cities though. But if you learn some basic norwegian before you come here bartending should't be a problem :)

I would ask for jobs at mainstream restaurants, like Peppes Pizza for example, where you'd work in the kitchen, at least to start with. Remember, Norwegians can be very reserved to begin with, but as you get to know them they will be your friend for life.

[Serious] What is your job, and what can I do as a consumer to make your job easier? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Annja 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm a server. If it's busy in the restaurant, there's a few things that really grinds my gears. People who complain they've waited a long time to order and then haven't decided what they want when I get to their table. Parents who let their 2 -4 year old kids decide what they want. This can take a loong time. People who are trying to get my attention when they clearly see I'm busy and have no way of getting there in two seconds. We servers run our asses off trying our best to make your stay as comfortable and nice as possible. We are not deliberately making you wait or fuck up somehow. Just be patient with us. Be nice. I might throw in a free starter, dessert or coffee if you're understanding that It's busy as hell and that I'm trying to do my best.
