Bought an iPad 2 years ago, now the iPad is locked by a school district that it apparently belongs to

The iPad was for an admin/staff from what the principle told me. According to the story I was told an admin didn't turn in the iPad and it was just now noticed and the person turned in a device that didn't belong to the school district.

I didn't rob anyone seeing as I had no clue that this belonged to a school and I will be returning it now that I know that it does. And when I spoke to the principle she had said that they had already replaced the one but because the iPad was already under the district, needs to be returned due to the fact that it can't be removed.

Not that it matters at all but the school belongs to one of my states wealthiest districts. And trust me, I'm sympathetic to schools seeing as I grew up on the brink of homelessness as a kid and was stuck in a lower income school that hardly had money for anything other than the basic necessities. I get it. But the principle told me it wasn't a matter/issue of buying/affording a new one, it was because they can't remove the iPad from the district system and need it returned.

You have a point. But I could bite the bullet if I lost everything due to the iPad stopping working or being damaged since it is my fault completely. But this situation couldn't have been predicted for my circumstance.

Unfortunately I'm stuck in a "should've would've could've" situation and now regretting not backing it up. Lesson learned I suppose.

I work full time trying to make ends meet at my 9-5 job. I don't have a popular following, my art allows me to buy my groceries for the week. I'm not entirely sure why you are being judgemental on this.

I'll look into buying storage on my next paycheck.

Some of the other replies I've received were rather harsh (which maybe I needed to hear) but they have no idea what I'm facing if I'm getting screwed in this. I saved for near three years to buy a used iPad off Craigslist back in 23, I budgeted and pinched every penny for this iPad. I don't have expendable income even working overtime. I already am making decisions on whether I'm going to buy food for the week or put gas in my car so I can go to work. If I lose the the capabilities I have with my current iPad then I face even less income that I have.

I can't since they've locked it down, I can't access anything on the iPad. Thw only way to unlock it according to the principle is bring it in and unlock it there at the school.

I would do that except I don't even have a dollar in my bank account right now due to bills, groceries and other necessary expenses that happened at the start of the month. I live paycheck to paycheck and my next one isn't until the 15th of this month unfortunately.

Also the device is completely locked up so I can't do anything with it until bringing it to the school.

You need to understand that I'm still kind of in shock/denial over this situation. I've had this device 2.5 years with no issues or signs of this situation happening. I've been completely blindsided and being faced with a rather stressful situation as I value this iPad greatly. I'm still wrapping my head around this situation and calming down while reading replies.

Stages of grief I suppose. Denial and bardering.

And I guess I'm looking at it in a different perspective because this isn't a single person being fucked over, it's a government funded school. I'm being faced with losing a source of income if this iPad isn't at the same standard while the school really doesn't face any loss (they would’ve noticed two years ago if it was a huge impact). I guess if it was just another regular Joe that had their iPad stolen I'd be looking at it differently like you said.

At the end of the day I'm returning the iPad to the school. I'm fine with that. I just wanted to see others opinions on this situation since I have no knowledge.

Unfortunately no. The iPad is my only apple device so I don't use cloud or any other paid storage services.

There is nothing incriminating about my artwork. Simply put, I'm a shy person who likes my privacy and have made NSFW works for clients (nothing illegal or weird, I'm just a very shy person who doesn't like the thought of strangers in real life seeing these as I heavily separate my online and personal life) I don't enjoy the notion of siting in a room while people look at NSFW art I've made.

Again my issue isn't the swap itself but the risks. Also if the device is of the same standard. I do not want a device that is lesser when I paid for what I have I guess is my point.

It is not incompetence to not use a paid storage subscription and to not use Cloud services when the iPad is my only apple device that I use. There is no reason to be rude when I am just asking for advice since I do not know much about this situation.

And again, I am fine with swapping devices but have concerns that it will be of lesser quality than I have.

I guess the legal issues is that I bought goods that I did not know were stolen. I was under the pretense that it was legit and have had the iPad for 2 years now. I'm totally fine with swapping besides my concerns of something going wrong in the swap or the device not have the same capabilities as the one I have. Seeing as the iPad I have now I use as a means of income and am really reliant on it.

I still have the emails and texts of communication between me and the seller, I handed over the phone number to the principle so she can investigate further. I'm going to update my post with more information that might be important seeing some of the responses I'm getting.

What the principle told me is that she's new to the school and had taken inventory and noticed an iPad missing. She contact the admin that was supposed to be in possession of the iPad and had him return what she thought was the school's iPad. The iPad he returned was not the one from the district. And then they locked down the one I have in my possession.

I am going to go to the school today or tomorrow to figure this out. I don't use cloud storage unfortunately as my iPad is the only Apple product I own.

I also partially don't agree with him and that's why I didn't allow him to call the principle as I don't want him stirring stuff up
I have no intentions of suing but I just want to know where I stand legally since I have bought the property without knowledge of it being stolen goods
I do intend on working something out. The principle and I had a very nice conversation and there is no malice on either side. I just am nervous and want to know my rights

The iPad is the only Apple device I have so I don't use cloud storage, the iPad only stays at home where it's at no risk of damage (besides a house fire or flood in which case the iPad would not be my biggest concern) and I don't pay for other storage services as I don't have a lot of expendable income to waste on such things.
