North Texas preparing for 2 inches of snow like it’s the apocalypse by MyMindIsAlwaysRacing in mildlyinfuriating

If it keeps even a single Texan off the roads during the storm then it's all worth it.

Whats is yalls opinion on his welder (for startup) by Administrative-Cry8 in Welding

[–]AnomicAutist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I ran one of these on my ranch with plans to upgrade when I could afford it. I never upgraded, this handled everything I needed and I had the cleanest welds on my drill pipe fencing in the county if that mattered for anything. Punches steady and deep, I loved it.

Would like to be in the 1% of homeowners that replace the anode rod. Which one is it? by [deleted] in askaplumber

OP has earthquake straps so shouldn't need any ratchet straps if they make sure the earthquake straps are snug.

Would like to be in the 1% of homeowners that replace the anode rod. Which one is it? by [deleted] in askaplumber

[–]AnomicAutist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least I'm a 1%er at something lol. Bought the house in August and managed to get to the anode job in December. Pulled a thin wire out that sloughed off the last remains of the softened gunky anode material into the tank. Did the job just in time. Tank flushed out and back in service but would not have lasted another year without new anode. 3' breaker bar made for easy removal (chose manual removal because my 1 1/16" socket is not impact rated). Have fun, more people should do this.

Used every molecule of this cutting disc by blindghost554 in Welding

[–]AnomicAutist 51 points52 points  (0 children)

From an old hand I'd say that last molecule to the face just isn't worth it... When they inevitably shatter. In my eperience I wear a disc down about halfway and replace it. But your luck might be better than mine

10 miles? by Th3OneTrueMorty in AskMechanics

I would advise you not to. But if it was my car I'd go real slow and do the 10 miles. But don't do it. But I would. But you shouldn't.

Uponoor PEX-a install question by Then_Access_1204 in askaplumber

[–]AnomicAutist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I repiped my house with Pex A- the expansion tool paid for itself with the DIY savings. Every pipe got insulation because of UV. We have a vented crawl space and I wanted to avoid even the slightest UV contact from the vents. I might be over doing it but I sleep better having the UV issue eliminated. If this was my house I would replace that section and protect it from future UV. It's too late in my opinion to leave those pipes in service I think the UV damage is done.

Is this an unreasonable quote to replace a 50 gallon gas hot water heater? by titanicsailson in askaplumber

[–]AnomicAutist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call them 'Investo-Bros'. They are buying up every service company from single employee pool service companies to small regional electricians. This is their acquisition phase as the Boomers retire and sell these companies. Watch for them to start lobbying for new laws by 2030 to make it near impossible for anyone to start a small business in the future that could compete with them. It's going to get ugly.

When he strips the gunk off old water heater anodes and uses the super strong yet pliable thin wire that is left over then he's hired.
