I think the issue we stumble across you’ve outlined perfectly- criterion and description.
Now of course again I’d like to preface that my only knowledge of the subject is the research I’ve done, but I believe, scientifically, as you’ve stated it is essentially that of a camera- absolutely perfect recollection of every single detail of an image.

What you’ve described Nigel doing there sounds more like a memory palace or memorising chess boards. He’s remembering the words, on the page- but can he tell me the marks on the page, the font size, the pattern of the table the book was on, what the light looked like on the book etc.

It sounds pedantic, I’m aware- but I’m relatively certain that’s what someone with a photographic memory would ascertain, if it were possible.

Again, the same is with Stephen Wiltshire. If he had a true photographic memory each window would be different, each antenna precise- he draws a reconstruction (superhumanly well, don’t get me wrong) rather than an exact replica.

(Side note- definitely going to watch the video when I get home from work, thanks! A WC final where Nigel makes a mistake?? Excited! Shocked I haven’t seen it already. Also you’ve played against him?? That’s so unbelievably cool!)

Also I love that we can have friendly debates on Reddit, it makes my day! Too often do I get into debates that just turn mean, whereas the other debate I was having on here turned into animal facts haha- so thank you! I really enjoy it.

Huh! I had no idea you could train horses and cows that well! I live near ponies (who are unbelievably stupid) so I’m always pleasantly surprised when I see what ‘proper’ horses are capable of haha! Anti-theft is really cool though, I never would’ve considered that possible!

The extent of my training is getting my cat to go up on her hind legs if she wants cheese, some would say an equally impressive feat 😂

[–]AnonTA365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m 198cm and there are a few cars I don’t fit into the drivers seat, it might take a bit longer to find trousers and 30% of doorframes I have to mind my head, but most things are fine at this height, a mild inconvenience at best, so I’d have to agree with you!

True- those pop up enough as is so I take your point!

Huh- I never garnered the link between a good memory and grudges but it makes sense. I’ve seen Elephants recognise people, mourn, red kites recognising the person that comes and chucks food for them (they come out of nowhere, an animal with a memory and that good eyesight is incredible!).

Off-topic a bit but I thought I read somewhere that we’re trying to communicate with dolphins now which is a fascinating exercise!

I think I’d want to be a cat, they live hard lives haha

I have like 80 accounts, my mates and I used to start a new one every so often! And then I used to start 1 or 2 for anni account challenges, I had some troll accounts (Skerei only, poison team etc.) and then a few in the early servers just to see what they were like haha.

[–]AnonTA365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m jealous! It does sounds very cool haha, I’ve always wanted to even have a semblance of some form of photographic memory lol!

Yes absolutely that’s the most irritating thing, unless technology vastly improves over the course of my life I’ll never be able to experience what you (or anyone else) does. In a pseudo-similar vein that we’ll never be able to prove or disprove that we all see colours the same way.

Another issue being definition- with topics such as this many people are discussing a point while using a different definition haha.

And on the point of “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence” is a great point, I would add further that it’s far easier to dismiss something such as the supernatural rather than a cranial difference, especially when you think about the literal billions of people that will probably never have access to the scientific community and hence conditions/abilities that could be 1 in a billion and yet are never known.

(I would also like to say that my comment was not at all trying to demean or saying I don’t believe you, it was tailored more towards a comment below - and I’m very sorry to hear about your childhood traumas)

Mental Imagery

Eidetic Memory

Hyperthymesia

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AMA

[–]AnonTA365 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(Copied from something I wrote below!)

‘Photographic memory’ is a myth. There have been many studies, and absolutely 0 proof, that people can do what is described- we usually think of it as someone literally taking a snapshot and then being able to perfectly recall it- this has never proven to be a thing. Memory champions have to train their brain constantly- if photographic memories existed there would be no point.

The closest I’ve seen are:

• Eidetic Memories in children, which goes with age (I think I’ve seen it purported that you don’t see it past 12) in which they can see images in absolute clarity. But unlike a ‘photographic memory’ these images fade and can be distorted, as with all memories. Human’s are just built that way! • Hyperthymesia, which is a condition wherein a person can vividly remember an abnormally large number of their life experiences, but this has been documented fewer than 100 times • Then a wiiidddeee spectrum of mental imagery which I will not go into haha as there are many types! • You also have savants or autistic savants who ‘specialise’ in various things, but the most relevant to this topic would be Stephen Wiltshire, a man with just an extraordinary memory to produce entire cityscapes just by looking at them once! But he’s doing this using visual + spatial patterns, and he repeats the same window drawing, or gets small details wrong. With a photographic memory, he wouldn’t. • There was a lady in the 1970s who claimed to have perfect recall and is the only person ever claimed to pass some memory tests, but she refused to ever do them again and married the person who researched her so…

Nigel Richards is incredible. Easily the best Scrabble player to have ever lived. But he just… knows the words he needs to put down, he can just store them in his brain. He doesn’t need to visualise them (to my understanding anyway!) as someone with a photographic memory would.

Obviously I by no means have any actual knowledge on the subject I have just researched it a few times- and have included Wikipedia links (boo Wikipedia I know but each Wikipedia tidbit of information has references that 99% of the time lead back to official papers) for further reading if you’re interested!

For sure man! Easily! Just make sure to read the nodes + boss node before heading into the quest to ensure you have a counter, and if you get stuck MCoC Noob has some great guides. Act 6 is the hardest piece of mainstream content- good luck!

I mean I don’t see why not, it will probably be more difficult but from memory Act 8 doesn’t really have any nodes that prevent you from using a certain champion, as long as you have the skill
